He went to Turkey, and he extracted from Erdogan a statement that Ukraine deserves to be in NATO (careful words as that isn’t a promise to support their bid now). But, a great start.

Also the Nazi who is also a Christian hating Jew destroying the Orthodox Church went to a prayer service with the Ecumenical Patriarch.

A memorial prayer for the victims of the war in Ukraine in the Cathedral of St. George in Phanar, Istanbul.I thank Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for the spiritual support of Ukraine and Ukrainians, for prayers for peace for our entire land, for all our people.

Zelenskyy needed to be back for the 500 day mark. I need to say that his entire turn from smacking Bulgeria’s pro-Russian president to praise for Czech and Slovaks to flattery and prayer in Istanbul then to Snake Island is a master class in diplomacy and public communications and influence.

We welcome the decision of the US to provide Ukraine with the new liberation weapons that will significantly help us to de-occupy our territories while saving the lives of the Ukrainian soldiers.

Under Article 51 of the UN Charter Ukraine has a universal internationally recognised right to self-defence and thus we have been officially requesting these types of munitions for a long time.

I would like to stress that in exercising our inalienable right to self-defence we will continue to strictly comply with all the international humanitarian conventions signed and ratified by Ukraine.

It is important to note that the russian federation has been indiscriminately using cluster munitions from day 1 of the unprovoked large-scale aggression. In February-March 2022 Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city with over a million population, was relentlessly bombarded by russians cluster munitions.

Our position is simple - we need to liberate our temporarily occupied territories and save the lives of our people. For this we need to inflict losses on the enemy - war criminals, rapists and looters - who are occupying our territories. The more losses we inflict on them the more lives of Ukrainian people we will be able to save.

It is in our interest to save the lives of our soldiers. This is why we will continue to do this using all lethal weapons available to us.

Regarding the cluster munitions, we have 5 key principles which we will abide by and which we have clearly communicated to all our partners, including the US. I have personally informed our US partners about these five principles in writing a long time ago.

1. Ukraine will use these munitions only for the de-occupation of our internationally recognised territories. These munitions will not be used on the officially recognized territory of russia.

2. We will not be using cluster munitions in urban areas (cities) to avoid the risks for the civilian populations - these are our people, they are Ukrainians we have a duty to protect.

Cluster munitions will be used only in the fields where there is a concentration of russian military. They will be used to break through the enemy defence lines with minimum risk for the lives of our soldiers. Saving the lives of our troops, even during extremely difficult offensive operations, remains our top priority.

3. Ukraine will keep a strict record of the use of these weapons and the local zones where they will be used.

4. Based on these records, after the de-occupation of our territories and our victory these territories will be prioritised for the purposes of de-mining. This will enable us to eradicate the risk from the unexploded elements of cluster munitions.

The Minister of Defence of Ukraine is by law acting as the Head of the national de-mining agency. In this capacity I will ensure the implementation of the relevant legal framework for the de-mining process after our victory.

5. We will report to our partners about the use of these munitions, and about their efficiency to ensure the appropriate standard of transparent reporting and control.

Another group of Russian mobiks are begging the Kremlin Ripper to help in the situation they ended up in: put on the first line to defend against relentless Ukrainian attacks with no artillery support or ammunition.

Some important points by Kofman here. I believe Jake Sullivan also pointed this out in defending the US's decision: this opens up a large stockpile of artillery ammunition that would otherwise be unavailable and goes a long way in helping bridge the gap between now and when Ukrainian allies are able to fully ramp up production as the year progresses. This is all in addition to the unique benefits cluster munitions provide.

Ukraine's offensive is limited by the artillery ammunition available. The US, and other countries, provided a significant amount for this operation. Much of this was borrowed from South Korea. Without this ammunition it is difficult to imagine this offensive taking place. 2/
Consequently, Ukraine's hardest limit is proably not manpower, or equipment, but arty ammunition. This is foremost about the numbers. Providing DPICM gives access to a sizable stockpile of artillery ammo that can alleviate the time pressure on UA operations. 4/

While UA retains options, the offensive may culminate whenever the ammunition runs low. Extending that timeline is critical. I wont get into the debate on effectiveness vs the risks, dud rates, etc. My view is these considerations are ultimately best left for Ukraine to weigh.

After heavy losses at Klishchiivka, south of Bakhmut, a Russian elite airborne brigade notorious for atrocities at Bucha was forced to make a chaotic retreat under fire, suffering more casualties, and some survivors were detained for refusing orders to immediately return to combat, Russian open-source site CIT says citing Russian reports

A powerful Ukrainian assault forced Russia's 83rd Airborne Assault Brigade to retreat on foot without an evacuation plan, only to be given "illegally issued orders" to go right back to the front, the Russian troops complained in a video appeal

Russian draftees in another unit at Klishchiivka - the 1442nd Regiment - also refused to fight after suffering heavy losses under Ukrainian fire while being sent into combat without ammunition, their relatives said in an appeal. Some of the refuseniks were reportedly being held in a pit

The Russian airborne troops said they were "fraudulently" sent to Klishchiivka, where they spent 15 days under mortar fire without Russian artillery or air support or communications (which had been shut down by Ukrainian electronic warfare)

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones reportedly zipped around freely overhead underhindered by Russian electronic warfare

After refusing to fight, they said they were threatened with being forced to join a "Storm-Z" unit of ex-convicts, notorious for being deployed in Russia's virtually suicidal so-called "meat assaults"

Unfortunately true.  We can hope it is needed, but there will be both destroyed prior systems and additionally earlier systems that have used up their barrel life based on heavy use.   If they are sending these and sending replacement barrels for the ones sent prior then it would be a good sign.  Not sure that is the case.

This is a sound strategy for Poland. They smartly understand that as a front line state, if they don’t want their land to be part of the “in depth” part of a defense in depth strategy, then they are going to have to hold up the Russians themselves on the ground. The Allies can respond quickly and get into the fight in the air and on the sea but there are serious logistical challenges to moving heavy equipment and infantry to where it’s needed in the east.

NATO planners have been prodding the eastern flank members to invest in mechanized infantry and tank units and now it’s slowly happening. Czech Republic recently invested in a large Swedish CV-90 purchase.

One of the “benefits” we are seeing is not just NATO states rearming— but NATO states rearming in a way that makes sense for an Alliance that may need to fight a real war.

It's been a long time in the making, but between all of the news about NATO states boosting production to help Ukraine, as well as remaking their militaries to counter Russia (whether it be Poland and tanks or the Nordic countries merging their air forces), and then we are seeing some really strong stuff out of Ukraine in the past 24-48 hours.

Day 500 is going much better for Ukraine and NATO than I would have ever anticipated.

I guess Russia better hope Iran can keep making artillery shells for them.

following my Axis and Allies strategy.  Spend everything you’ve got on tanks

I am imagining a world where soon a country like Finland, with its large number of somewhat impregnable mountain military bases, will respond to any invasion threat by immediately sending waves of 1000 large armed drone from its fortresses to descend upon enemy armor and mobile artillery.  No more days where Ivan leisurely sets up masses of large artillery to do the Russian ‘plow the field and then send waves of troops through the breach’ tactics.    They seem in capable of learning new tactics.
In that Brave New World, the country who masters anti-jamming technology - so that its thousand AI controlled drones can cover distance quickly and attack from above with the near impunity - will level the playing field against a collection of even hi-tech Russian MBTs and armor.
The country that masters that technology won’t be Russia. Nor will Russia again have the economic and technological resources to attack with high tech anything.    Having used up almost all their stores of older Soviet kit, I do not see Russia ever being able to rearm to the extent it would need to attack a modern Poland conventionally.   Now that the Nordic countries are almost all NATO allies, they are completing their prior plans to combine their countries’ military operations into one C&C system (the NORDEFCO agreement on steroids ) they will also have the conventional means to fuck up this now much-neutered Russia.
Absent nukes (which I know is an ‘other than that Mrs. Lincoln, did you like the play? ‘ statement) Russia has forever lost its capability at being a menacing conventional military super power capable of defeating NATO allies if the US is not involved.
And I was alive to see it. Thanks Vlad.

The noise on Capitol Hill about the transfer of DPICM is frustrating. I get the hesitancy but if you want to be against them while saying you want to help Ukraine win— then you need to come with alternate plans to make up for the 155 shortfall and not just “be better.”

Those could be re-imported to the US and sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) since they were obviously manufactured prior to the 1986 Gun Control Act.
Of course they would be subject to the NFA registration rules (as they now stand).

I've seen some speculation elsewhere that we aren't seeing as many fully wrecked/turret-tossed vehicles/tanks/etc., and are instead seeing stuff that hit mines or just didn't cook off like we used to, because they are running low on ammo and are rationing fuel.  People saying that admitted that could be anecdotal and they could have been damaged vehicles that were stripped of a lot of stuff.
