The documentation of the explosions reported on the Crimea bridge, the Kerch bridge. At least one part of the bridge collapsed and other parts suffered severe damage; Civilian casualties are also reported and some cars were damaged/destroyed by the explosion.

🚨 BREAKING: Traffic over the Kerch Bridge between occupied Crimea and Russia has been stopped. Russian media report the cause may have been a Ukrainian attack. Locals say they heard multiple explosions and at least one bridge span has collapsed. 💥 Currently 5am.

What got hit in Luhansk yesterday:

The coal mine at Yuvileine has been massively struck by Ukrainian forces this morning. It has been a vital logistics hub for Russian forces in the area for a long time, just outside of GMLRS range. (see @DefMon3's detailed thread on the mine from November) https://t.co/w7mIYacVOZ

A pillar being down would be awesome. That would effect both directions of traffic.

Hope it was an ATACMS that did this, but a Storm Shadow from dear old Mummy is almost as good.

People are whining on Twitter about "civilians" possibly being killed in the strike, which is bullshit.

The Kerch bridge connects illegally occupied territory with the territory of the illegal occupier.

There are no "civilians" on the Kerch bridge, just Russian military and collaborators.

Both directions of Kerch bridge damaged. Had noticed the railing on the far side appeared to be offset on some of the previous shots posted.

It is. This video shows one side of the road has dropped at least a foot, the other direction is partially detached. Looks like the underlying pillar IS damaged, which matches what the Crimean Putler official said earlier and lines up with Ukrainian claims of using a water surface, or submarine drone.

Russia pulled out of grain deal because of bridge attack

https://www.ft.com/content/c0c62c3c-54fa-49c7-9d5c-53deb91bf989

Quote

Russia has formally withdrawn from a UN-brokered deal to export Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, potentially imperilling tens of millions of tonnes of food exports from the war-torn country. Dmitry Peskov, president Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, told reporters on Monday that the agreement had “essentially stopped” and Russia would no longer co-operate with the deal.

Russia must have known the Kerch bridge would be attacked 9 days ago then, because they've been announcing they would pull out of the grain deal for nearly 2 weeks.

Alternatively, they are lying, because they are fucking liars. Anything Peskov says about anything is almost certainly a lie. It's quite literally his job description.

Erdogan is many things and an arrogant dick is one of them. He very much wants to be seen as a power broker, while still playing the middle as much as possible. The grain deal was critical to that perception.

Now we see if Erdogan is going to flex nuts on Putin. I think he will. If he doesn't, he will look weak.

I suspect that Russia’s method of stopping grain shipments will involve missile attacks on ports and storage facilities as well as passive anti-shipping measures like mines. I don’t think they’d start sinking ships at sea or do a standoff if Turkey decided to run escorts (unlikely, IMO). I think it will just be used as an excuse to destroy infrastructure in Odesa.

Russia’s previous statements about this or any deal should be viewed as entirely unrelated to subsequent decisions about them. And entirely unrelated to their current method of thinking about any such agreement. Any time you’re watching the Kremlin, it’s good to divorce official public statements from their actual policy (aside from remarks made by VVP himself which occasionally prove extremely enlightening about his own murderous and paranoiac worldview.)

For the Kremlin, any deal is only useful as a tool of blackmail and extortion and so they will almost immediately begin bluffing about pulling out as soon as one is signed, especially in tumultuous circumstances.  Russia will threaten to abrogate deals it intends to keep and will swear fealty to deals they intend to break or violate depending on what they think might advance their extortion power. The Kerch Bridge doesn’t have much to do with it.

This is a really great thread, but first, some of my own thoughts. Without going all CR, I believe that the Obama administration’s by turns idealistic and then cynical Ukraine and Russia policy was a deep miscalculation. I think much of it was driven by a misplaced desire to avoid grappling with the new post-Cold War reality. I believe a not-insignificant bit of personal vanity to ensure that his famous campaign retort to Mitch Romney about 1980s policy didn’t get proven wrong played into things.

In 2014 Russia murdered 298 souls on a civilian aircraft from across NATO. They lied about who did it, and they lied about who was in the Donbas, just as they had lied about everything.  And we swallowed those murders with some mostly symbolic sanctions and took ages to firmly stand up against the Kremlin lie machine.

The time called for bold and decisive action. For instance—- publicly taking Putin at his word that there were only separatists and no Russians fighting and announcing a peacekeeping deployment to protect civilians and civil aviation. Or at least, the announcement of a rotating symbolic troop presence well west of the LOC in the east as a training/advisory/deterrence mission, or rotating NATO fixed wing units to air police behind the LOC.

Russia will not reward you no matter what choices you make, but will respect or cower in the face of bold action.  For too long, we let ourselves believe the Medvedev that went to get a Ray’s Hell Burger represented something meaningful in Russia.

Yeah, sinking grain ships at sea is one of those things that will hurt them a little bit amongst their few remaining allies.  Especially among the African nations as well as China, who needs stability in that area as well as lower food prices.

.  Crazy that Ukrainian ground forces were talking about some new event when it was really the bridge

And I think people were kind of sleeping on the idea of Ukraine doing something big on the MH17 anniversary

So it looks like the Kerch bridge is not damaged beyond repair.  Is that because the UKA sees benefit in only damaging it?  Or do they  WANT to take it all the way out, but can't?

#69244

Marine drones are not an ideal weapon to take out the bridge pillars.  They can't go fast enough to lend any force to the explosion since they can't penetrate the pillars before exploding.  The best way to take it out is with a concentrated strike from jets or ATACMS.  It needs to be hit hard from above in multiple spots.  Storm Shadows could also do it, but it would take a large number of them because they are slow enough to be tracked and shot down.

I almost wrote something similar in the Dark Brandon thread, but didn’t want to derail the thread. The 2014 response to Russia was a grim failure of the Obama administration and Biden was sitting 2nd chair for that. When discussing on TOS, a lot of people were of the opinion that “we shouldn’t start WW3 over Crimea and East Ukraine.” Others, myself included, were of the opinion that it was only the beginning, appeasement never works, and we should learn from history and punch this bully in the mouth now then rather than wait for more damage to be done.

The price we now pay for waiting is catastrophic. And we now know that Russia is a paper bear and would have been absolutely rolled out of Ukraine with very little heartache. We also now know that drawing a hard line and setting the terms up front for when NATO would intervene has kept any nuclear threat in check, as well. If there was ever a time for a Russian collapse and a push for dismantling their nuclear arsenal, it will be coming at the tail end of a Ukrainian victory.

Ukraine does not want a connection to Russia. They will continue attacking it until it's gone.

Correct. There is a shit ton of air defenses around the Kerch as without it, Crimea is cut off. I believe UKA sent storm shadows in the past couple weeks, but they were shot down by air defenses. There were videos circulating about it.

So they tried a different method that has fewer defenses.
