I was just wondering where the film of Gepards has been.  We've seen their scoreboards, but not much shooting.  Those things are pretty damned cool.

Gone are the days of Russian artillery dominance. Putting a platoon of towed guns in an open field would only be possible if conditions have drastically changed. https://t.co/IOEnUC5ZnE

russia is moving everything they can to try and just hold ground.. but this is going to just bring more troops into the range of ukraine artillery.

That means Russia has no drones or counterbattery fire to take them out?  How much more effective is artillery when you aren't constantly moving it around?  Must be alot.

Word is Ukrainians requested this for more mechanical training.  Probably a good call, these are amazing but require a lot of know how.

Re: Armenia, well, shit Russia.  The deal is "you provide protection/peace/stability, ESPECIALLY with respect to that asshole nextdoor, Azerbaijan," and we're your boy."

Russia isn't providing that.  Any of that.  Armenia is asking, quite sensibly, "so what's the fucking point of being your pal if you aren't going to do the one fucking thing you're supposed to do?  And, by the way, the fact that you won't/can't do that one thing ALSO tells us that you really can't do much about it if we call you on your bullshit.  What are you gonna do, invade?  With what?"

Russia is not a friend you want to have.  Hell, even Luka might agree with that . . . if he knew he wouldn't be executed minutes later (either by Putin for betraying him, or by his own people once Putin withdraws his protection).

BREAKING: US likely to send long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine for the first time: Officials https://t.co/2kJLMrhQ8B

"They are coming," said one official who had access to security assistance plans. The official noted that, as always, such plans are subject to change until officially announced.

A second official said the missiles are "on the table" and likely to be included in an upcoming security assistance package, adding that a final decision has not been made. It could be months before Ukraine receives the missiles, according to the official.

Honestly, if what the above map is true, and the Russian's have basically brought in everything they can spare outside of Robotyne , we may well be looking at the decisive battle to control the south of Ukraine right now (exclude Crimea for now).  If the Ukrainians fuck them up, basically the rest of their defensive lines are untenable.  Taking back the land bridge will be huge.  I do think you are right, intel for everyone and their behavior suggests blood in the water.

I met Cat a year and half ago, shortly after the full-scale invasion started, when I read an article about some of the work she was doing helping Ukrainian museums preserve cultural artifacts from war damage. We recorded this podcast at the time and have kept in touch ever since. She has helped out on a bunch projection operations, including the dicey one in Paris that almost got us both arrested. And she put together the team of summer Stanford interns in Estonia who helped out with #SpecialMilitaryOperation: Tallinn—after which I went on to project in other Nordic capitals and Cat went home to Kyiv to go to drone school.

Three weeks later, she is a certified drone pilot—though certified to do precisely what I’m not 100 percent sure and she isn’t saying. She writes:

"I lead the kind of life that often consists of moments where I catch myself looking around and wondering, “what am I doing right now?” Last week, as I was going on hour eleven of my twelve-hours-a-day drone pilot training program, a tiny beam of sunlight snuck through the boarded up windows of our inconspicuous building and reminded me that outside, there was yet another beautiful summer day slipping away from me. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

If you know me, you know that almost every decision that I’ve made in my life for the last few years has been guided by the single desire to help Ukraine win the war. And by that, I mean the war that started almost ten years ago with the annexation of Crimea—the long war. I love Ukraine more than I love the sun, no matter how tempting its slivers of light may be. And so if that means spending twelve hours a day training to pilot drones to help get occupants off of our territories and improve our situational awareness to save some of our boys’ lives, I’ll do it a million times over. But I sometimes kind of hate that I have to.

At the end of one of the long days at the pilot program, one of the soldiers asked me what I’m studying. I told him, war studies. He asked what I wanted to do. I said I want to win the war. And he told me that was sad. Believe it or not, it was the first time I had really thought about that. About the fact that I don’t dream of seeing the Seven Wonders of the World, or honestly, about the fact that even as I’m writing this, I can’t think of examples of other “normal dreams” that “normal people” dream about.

Do other people dream of writing books? Starring in movies? Going to space and seeing the moon?

I dream about watching the Kremlin burn, I dream about our tanks rolling through triumphantly through Crimea, I dream in blue and yellow and I dream in camo green. And so, I’m a trained drone pilot now. Perhaps I’ll one day put that to use and all of my dreams will come true. And then I’ll learn what “normal” people dream about when they’re free to dream."

It's a chess move, give up Crimea or run the risk of having hundreds of thousands of Russians trapped.  That's the only thing I can think of, and admittedly, it's not great.

There's also a video of Russia shelling Ukrainian positions near Novoprokopivka, meaning the Ukrainians are continuing to advance south of Robotyne. It won't embed, likely due to people flagging it for violent/graphic content.

We are slowrolling because we have a bunch of folks in the bureaucracy who are still believing that there will be real consequences to “escalating.”

The reality is this: Russia cares about the outcome of the war and not about what weapons systems Ukraine wins or loses with. So the question you have to answer is “are we willing to risk that Ukraine might win.” And now people are coming around to thinking that way and to say “yes.”

We’ve easily ran through about 3-4 Ukraine policies since February 2022.
