Covert Shores/HI Sutton one of the best observers of the Russian Navy and he has a good thread up about the NordSea bombing and RU’s seabed warfare capabilities.

He of course rightfully dismisses the claims of Hersh that we did it but also clearly believes the popular thesis of Ukrainian commandos on a boat doesn’t hold water.  Good reminder that despite claims by one poster on another thread, Russia is still very much a suspect.

45 and 50 year-old first lieutenants....so much winning.  There is one helluva lag over there that we've seen in the reporting of deaths, but I'm guessing these guys were from the Ukrainian counter-offensive.

Also the first guy was a "deputy company commander for political work" which makes me wonder if he was one of the "barrier troops" meant to stop retreating Russian soldiers, and if so, if one of them fragged him.

But the Russian defense ministry published a video on Tuesday that appears to show Sokolov participating in a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and other Russian military leaders. CNN cannot confirm whether the man in the video is Sokolov, when the meeting took place or where was his video appearance filmed.

The Kremlin earlier on Tuesday refused to comment on the Ukrainian claim that Sokolov had been killed.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov earlier on Tuesday refused to comment on the Ukrainian claim that Sokolov had been killed.

“There has been no information from the Ministry of Defense. This is entirely in their purview and we have nothing to say here,” Peskov told reporters Tuesday during a routine call.

I’ve seen links on several other popular sites, this was just the first link when I googled just now.  It looks like the term “pinned down” just means they’re not able to advance or maneuver, not necessarily surrounded or cut off from supplies.  I’m not sure how accurate that is or how big of a deal losing 15k dudes at once would be.  Even for Russia who is throwing meat into the grinder, losing an entire division seems like it would be meaningful.

In looking at the control map, I just can't see this being overly accurate.  There is a salient to north of Bakhmut, but it seems too large for the Ukrainians to pincer.  From what I gather (and I my understanding could well be wrong), the Ukrainians control the highlands over looking the area and can reign down artillery on the Russians pretty much everywhere near there.  Even though the city is completely destroyed, the Russians have a political stake in saying they have taken and control it.  I think the Ukrainians are using this against them to goad them into continuing to reinforce untenable positions, and subsequently they are slaughtering them (we saw that video a few days ago, yikes).  Basically, the more the Russians reinforce, the more the Ukrainians get to kill them, without a ton of risk to them.  Hyping it up would make sense under this scenario.

no big deal, just a forever war they’ve already lost. Keep sacrificing your nation’s future in a futile attempt to hold Crimea. Every month Ukrainian forces will more closely resemble a modern NATO military while Russia’s is continuously downgraded. Whatever Russia’s current (heavily revised) goals are, they can’t replace the equipment they’re losing. If their goal is to nuke crimea after they lose it, I suppose they’re right on schedule!

Step aside, Storm Shadow: Ukraine is getting an even more powerful missile

The American MGM-140 ATACMS missile is blazingly fast and easily launched

Fabian Hoffmann 26 September 2023 • 7:00am
MLRS system capable of firing ATACMS

After more than a year of pleading with the Biden Administration, it seems that Zelensky has got his wish. The United States looks set to finally send MGM-140 ATACMS missiles to Ukraine.

The American missile would be the third long-range strike weapon Ukraine will receive from the West, following deliveries of Storm Shadow cruise missiles from Britain and France earlier this year.

While the British Storm Shadow has proved highly effective, the ATACMS – or “Army Tactical Missile System” – is on another level. Equipped with a 500-pound warhead, it is blazingly fast; while the Storm Shadow and Scalp-EG take 15 minutes to cover a distance of 190 miles, an ATACMS missile will cover the same ground in just five minutes.

Better still, it’s ground launched. While the Storm Shadow requires fighter jets for delivery, the ATACMS utilises the M-142 Himars rocket artillery launcher, which is already in service in Ukraine. This combination of high speed and easy delivery means that ATACMS is better able to engage time-sensitive targets, including mobile missile launchers and high-ranking military officials on frontline visits.

The only snag is how far Washington is willing to go. It isn’t clear how many systems the US is prepared to hand over, and according to reports Biden has indicated that only “a small number” will be provided to start with.

It’s also unclear what variant Ukraine will receive. The United States still has a significant reserve of ATACMS missiles, but the vast majority of them have expired and are currently considered unserviceable. The only operational type is the M57, which – loaded with over 200 pounds of high explosives – would be perfectly capable of defeating most Russian targets in Ukraine.

However if Washington is unwilling to hand these over, it could refurbish its expired M48 or M39 missiles. Many experts think this is more likely, considering the Biden Administration’s consistent emphasis on the operational importance of ATACMS in U.S. military planning, but the refurbishment could delay battlefield deployment.

When they are available, however, these missiles are likely to prove effective. The M48 is largely similar to the M57, although a little less accurate, but the M39 offers a very different payload. Its 500-pound cluster munition warhead disperses 300 bomblets over a wide area. When these bomblets explode, they create a dense cloud of deadly fragments that pose a threat to both personnel and equipment. This could be particularly useful when striking airfields and air defence sites in Crimea, and if the long range version of the M39 is handed over, all of Crimea would be in range.

Regardless of the specific variant Ukraine receives, ATACMS will give Kyiv a significant boost. Long-range strike weapons are critical in modern warfare, and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles have already devastated Russia’s Black Sea Fleet Headquarter in Sevastopol. But supplies are limited, and adding to the stockpile is essential as Kyiv attempts to keep up the tempo.

It will also encourage other countries to follow suit. Berlin is currently prevaricating over the potential delivery of KEPD 350 Taurus cruise missiles, with Chancellor Scholz concerned it risks potential escalation. The delivery of ATACMS should help set his mind at rest. And while it won’t win the war alone, it will play a crucial role in undermining Russia’s forces.

This just continues to be a comedy of errors.  The value of ATACMS in Ukraine has been obvious for 18 months, but we didn't give them because...reasons.  One reason being we don't have many.  But we have all the older ones in storage that we could get ready.  And yet we're just NOW discussing that?

The American government has done a phenomenal job of prosecuting this war, and that makes the few glaring mistakes even more galling.  We needed to have done all this an entire goddamn year ago for fuck's sake.
