GeoConfirmed UKR.Footage by @bradyafr, @COUPSURE and @Tatarigami_UA confirms at least 21 (!) destroyed/damaged 🇷🇺 helicopters after the first use of ATACMS delivered by US. This is the probably the biggest blow to the Russian Air Force since the beginning of the war. 1/X https://t.co/SqKGDJprgw

The second one looks worse than Pickett's Charge.  Just miles of open field with no cover at all, pure target practice, all while being shot at with highly lethal weaponry that requires almost no skill to aim.  It's a bold move.

Avdiivka has been a blood bath. The aerial footage is insane.

ukraine has established a bridge head across the dnieper river. They must have local air superiority to do that? I assume that drones and artillery would make quick work of temporary bridges if Russia had them in the area … I guess the alternative is Ukraine is constantly deploying and retrieving armored vehicle launched bridges? Either way this is an impressive operation.

What I've read on the bridgehead is that these are marines that were trained in the UK, and that they used hundreds of civilian boats to make the crossing.  There isn't much concrete out there on this operation, but I don't get the sense that they have any viable means at current to move heavy equipment across the river, at least not yet.  I do wonder if they feel the Russian's have had to move their reserves to the east and there is real opportunity here.  Perhaps because of the geographic barrier, the Russians didn't heavily mine the area.  There is also a big natural sand pit area not far behind the Russians, which to me means the Russians may only be able to squeeze so many people in the area.  If the Ukrainians can defeat the personnel there, perhaps a real bridgehead with the ability to move heavy stuff in behind them is real.  We haven't seen the Abrams in play yet anywhere, and I've gotten the sense the Ukrainians were going to deploy them on almost a surprise level.  This would obviously be very risky, but the reward of being behind the Russian defensive lines with that kind of fire power would be huge.   Fingers crossed.

That is the issue with the Zerg rush concept in todays battlefield. If you don’t have air superiority then you are going to be going headlong into the teeth of a established defensive position.

Drones make achieving the element of surprise incredibly difficult and much importantly allow of for a vastly quicker response time to advances under the fog of war that is generated whenever some form of surprise is achieved.

Say you do surprise a position by being able to cloak a buildup of troops/armor and then attack in mass. Prior to drone recon you are relying on eyes on capabilities and reports from units to show contact points and potential enemy unit strength. So as the attacking force you have the element of surprise to target a weak point and still feint to confuse on the ground reports. This puts the early momentum on the side of the attacking force and you hope to ride that momentum to a breakthrough.

The US approach is to own the air plus real time satellite imagery plus on the ground reports. If you don’t have the air or satellite capabilities then you had to rely on what is being reported from the front, which tends to be much less reliable. Now the UKA  can still get real-time intelligence via drones.  So they can pivot fire support into the advancing troops faster (before they are engaged at their positions) and isolate the point of contact much faster and therefore reinforce that much quicker.

It’s wild how effective expendable drones are. It doesn’t appear either side has much jamming equipment? The best I’ve seen in videos are extremely short range, sitting on top of armored vehicles, really only good for defense against kamikazi drones. I assume they’re just blasting a shit load of RF into the air all around them. Does either side have more directed/focused/higher-gain jammers?

Spoiler

The worst single day for the Russian Air Force, not just for last week but for the entire war so far, took place last Tuesday, on Oct. 17, following the (for the Kremlin) surprise Ukrainian deployment of US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles tipped with warheads specifically designed to saturate an airfield with cluster munitions.

ATACMS missiles struck an airfield near the Russia-occupied city of Berdyansk destroying at least nine attack and transport helicopters. Another ATACMS salvo hit an airbase near the Russia-occupied city of Luhansk ruining another five helicopters. Ukrainian military bloggers and open-source satellite imagery widely confirmed the Russian losses.

Russian military bloggers have called the ATACMS strikes “a black day for the Russian Air Force” and “the worst aircraft losses of the war.”

According to some Ukrainian estimates, the actual Russian losses might be as much as double the independently confirmed losses because the cluster munitions carried by the American ATACMS are so numerous, that any aircraft parked on an airfield under an ATACMS strike would almost certainly be hit by multiple bomblets and put out of action.

The authoritative Defence Express analytical platform reported, most likely, in that day of Ukrainian missile strikes, at least 20 military helicopters, or about six percent of the rotary wing aircraft in the entire Russian Air Force, were rendered long-term unflyable or damaged too badly to be worth trying to repair.

It's now either a hangar queen in Ukraine, or will have to be shipped back to Russia somehow, because there's no way the mechanics in the field can check everything (wiring, etc.) on the other side of the holes.

They are M74 bomblets, which are the size of baseballs, and they each have fragmentation and incendiary materials in them.  What the frag is I don't know.

Here's a fun clip, unless you are Russian, in which case its shit your pants nightmare sort of stuff.  You can see the baseballs, or bomblets release.
