Yeah, but you’re talking about a battle-tested economy though.

And we are three months or so out from Putin’s next election so they can raise the rates and then drop it, and if they are losing a thousand or so a day from wounded/killed/sick, that’s potentially another80,000+ Russians that won’t be able to vote against Putin.

#Moldova intends to leave the #CIS, a Russia-aligned trade and political body, by the end of 2024The country will complete the process of leaving the Commonwealth of Independent States by the end of next year by consistently denouncing all the remaining agreements concluded…

Moldova, small as it is, could easily expel the Russians. They have every incentive to do it. There are 1-2k Russians in the Transnistria region but there are more than enough Moldovan police and military to arrest those guys and eject them from the country at any time.

The problem is that Russia has them over an economic barrel. They provide almost all of the gas and fuel that keeps the place running. It's the same for almost all the republics, they hate Russia. Somebody has to be willing to go first, then the Russian Federation collapses.

Good to see at least Moldovans are making diplomatic moves in the right direction.

The AFU repelled a fairly big Russian assault, reportedly in the Lyman-Kreminna direction. A mix of infantry and IFV's/APC's was held off with accurate usage of artillery and mortar fire, as well as cluster munition.

"Your son lived long enough to scrawl out this message, knowing he was going to die.  Here's the message."

In a different part of Ukraine, apparently shipping continues (note: this guy up front states that he's selective about what he includes in his reports so that the Russians cannot use the info, so there's more going on than he mentions):

7 ships inbound, 7 ships outbound, 14 ships sailed the Ukrainian Corridor today. We may be seeing a pre-Christmas slowdown. 6 ships delivered to the UK, Italy, Spain, Egypt and Romania.

And Sutton does a great job of talking about how Russia has to adapt to a country with no navy defeating Russia's navy.

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2023/12/russia-forced-to-adapt-to-ukraines-maritime-drone-warfare-in-black-sea/

If you can measure a new weapon's impact by the lengths the enemy has to go to feel safe against it, then Ukraine's maritime drones are hugely successful. The Russian Navy is deploying a multi-layered approach to defeating them.

Ukraine’s maritime drones, small boats filled with explosives, are having a disproportionate influence on the war in the Black Sea. Earlier this month journalists were shown a secret basewith at least 16 Magura V5 maritime drones, showing that more is to come.

Known properly as uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), maritime drones are not unique to Ukraine. Even Russia has a few projects. Yet while Ukraine wasn’t the first to use them, it is still a novel technology which took the naval world by surprise. The way Ukraine uses them is accelerating the inevitable rise of armed USVs worldwide. It certainly took the Russian Navy by surprise.

The first, and most visible, defense has been the addition physical barriers across harbor entrances. These are likely moderately effective at preventing Ukrainian USVs from penetrating the harbors, and are combined with machine guns and warships on sentry duty for a robust defense. Sevastopol has received multiple layers of nets, floating booms and even a chain of barges. Other harbors also, and most recently the Kerch Bridge. The latter was only added after Ukraine successfully damaged it with an explosive laden USV on July 17 2023.

Beyond the harbor walls, aircraft are the main threat to Ukrainian USVs. They can be detected by Russia’s vintage Be-12 Mail flying boats which can then alert other aviation units. These have radar which was designed to find the periscope of a submarine, so the small USV is likely detectable. The flying boats will be used to alert helicopters which can fly out to engage the USVs.

---

Russia’s high-value ships, such as the weapons transports Ursa Major and Sparta-IV and government connected tankers, are now escorted across the Black Sea. This is normally done by patrol ships and frigates. The ships also turn off their AIS (automated identification system) to avoid being tracked by open sources. These efforts are only partly effective.

These convoys have been targeted by USVs on several occasions, with the escorts facing the brunt of the attacks. Two of these high-value ships recently crossed the Black Sea and are now in the Mediterranean. Ursa Major and the tanker Yaz, sistership of Sig which was hit hard by a USV on August 5, will make the perilous return tourney in the coming weeks.

---

Russia could have implemented some defenses much earlier, even before the first attacks. Yet these are the realities of war. What we have learned however is that Ukraine has maintained the initiative. Russian defenses are reactionary, so the next major development is more likely Ukrainian than Russian.

Love it, and sorry to the Navy posters here, but Navies do not take back land. And that is what Ukraine has to do. All the Grunts out there know what I mean. You can give me all the support you want/can, but I got to get off my ass into cold boots and move in a direction. This is all cute, but the focus needs to go back to the land battles. AP had a good segment on it today.

#76811

So it would appear that we and our allies are going to use the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to allow the Ukrainians to "buy" weapons from us.  A clever hold back, which circumvents the political hoopla.

So, how bad are things going around the AFU bridge head on the right bank near Kherson for RU to risk the planes after previous Patriot batteries taking out planes behind the front. Hope they do it another time to confirm it isn’t a good idea.

So they've been producing SU-34s since 2006 and they've been in service since 2014, and they have produced close to 160.  20 or so have been lost in Ukraine - only 12% or so of all Su-34s lost, but the crazy thing is, a lot of them were lost making bomb runs with unguided bombs, which put them in proximity to air defenses.

Most of the precise stuff that can go on their strike aircraft needs to be guided in manually, that’s why the Su-34 is a two seater. They don’t have FLIR targeting pods.

They’d been chucking dumb bombs with guidance packages from a distance and it actually kept them farther away. Seems like AFU got a German Patriot and deployed it smartly.

Imagine how well they’d do if we stopped being assclowns about more aid.

So earlier when I posted about the US and other allies seizing frozen assets and giving them to the Ukrainians to "buy" weapons, well the Russians aren't happy about this.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that if U.S. authorities decide to seize frozen Russian assets or continue “fueling military escalation” in Ukraine, this could mean the end of diplomatic relations between the countries.https://t.co/o4pPcibIQ6

I think they just realized we are going to use their own money to fight them, which is hilarious in it's own right.   Helps everyone, and is a nice fuck you and double whammy to them.

How the airspace Ukraine 🇺🇦 closed over the Kherson Oblast with a Patriot System realistically looked when they shot down 3x Russian Su-34 Fighter JetsThe maximum range of a PAC-2 Patriot missile against aircraft is 160km

would be hilarious if those were friendly fire

Russian serviceman posting on the Grey Zone channel suggests today's takedown of 3 Russian Su-34 bombers might have been friendly fire, because it has already happened before. They do not see it as a given but rather as a possible theory. Which is quite funny, to be honest.

Putin wants a ceasefire and to keep what he already took ahead of his “election” but everybody knows he wouldn’t honor it in the long run, and it’s just a means for him to try and resupply and rehabilitate his military.

He knows Ukraine won’t agree. Prepare for whatever he’s came up with as a response to the refusal. https://t.co/nPakfleTHi
