That was a long article to say that the House, Senate, and President were all Democrat in 1944. So, it was easy to hide the money - while only have to talk to 7 people. A split congress and white house couldn't have done that. On the one hand, having a split congress and white house leads to much more accountability, but on the other hand, it prevents the president from being able to do whatever the hell he wants.

We also had something like 16 million people in the military, and were fighting massive wars on four continents and across three oceans. We were cranking out multiple aircraft carriers every month (we ended up with 105 aircraft carriers) and were building thousands of bombers every year. We had logistics chains that stretched around the globe. We were supplying our biggest Allie’s as well.   It wasn’t too hard to slide that in.

This is what one of the federal reserves had on their info page

In 1943 and 1944, more than 40% of GDP was devoted to national defense. Total spending on national defense from 1940 and 1945 was a little over $5 trillion (in 2019 dollars). This represents about a quarter of 2018 GDP. (The numbers for 2019 GDP are not final yet.)

To illustrate the magnitude of U.S. spending during WWII, imagine spending $1 million per hour, 24 hours per day, for 365 days. At this pace, it would take 576 years to spend as much as the U.S. did during WWII.2

Interesting video on how the Russians really screwed up the tank thing.  Of note, even though the Gulf War exposed the flaws of the T-72 platform in 1991, the Russians went ahead and rolled out the T-90 a year later, rather than go back to the drawing board and protect the crews and make a more survivable tank.  The Russians also didn’t place much emphasis on recovering and repairing tanks.

Thats where the budget gap with Western nations really starts to come into play.  We put a lot of training into our crews and realize that they and their institutional knowledge are harder to replace than the tanks themselves, and we work to recover and repair tanks.

Russia?  Nope, and the tank forces in 2024 are going to be way understaffed and inexperienced, given how many crews died in 2022 and 2023 when the T-series pops their turrets.

Hard disagree about there being more accountability now than there was then, whether or not there is divided control between the President and Congress. The budget is infinitely more complex and it's much easier to hide $800 million or $50 billion.

Also the government used to be funded by 12 separate and detailed Appropriations bills, each of which would pass both the House and the Senate. But the political party for oligarchs decided it was too politically inconvenient to be responsible legislators, and so now the government is funded annually (in general) through one massive appropriations bill that no single member of the House or Senate has read.

I could go on and on about how citizen representation in Congress used to be much stronger but what I've written above are the most important points.

Also, I realize it gets confusing because the political party for oligarchs intentionally misuses it all of the time, but it's actually called the Democratic party.

Great info. With that kind of budget for war, it was much easier to fund 2 cities in bumfuck Egypt and a bomb that could have theoretically ended civilization (or not worked at all). However, I'm not so sure that that kind of budget would have been generated by a divided legislative and executive branch. Or, more succinctly, I don't think we would have had nearly as large of military budget for WW2 in a divided "House". As an aside, I think I've decided that I like the word Bumfuck: Someone deserves a lot of way underappreciated credit.

I don’t know, that felt pretty existential in some ways - Americans were rationing gas, were scrounging up scrap metal and rubber and donating/selling them, buying war bonds, growing “victory” gardens, etc. car production was converted to military production, etc.. Hell, women lost their silk supplies from Japan for stockings , and nylon was regulated and rationed to civilians because of its military use.  The American people tolerated a lot after Pearl Harbor, and a divided legislature could have seen one side accusing the other of not supporting America enough after we were attacked.

It’s weird looking at America and our war footing from that era - Putin doesn’t seem to be able to get Russia on the kind of war footing that he needs, and he’s had two years to do it (or ten if you think about 2014), and it’s a country that shares a border with Russia.

I don’t know, it’s the middle of nowhere, in a town of 17,000, with their own language/dialect.  And the Russian judicial system seems to be doing just fine stirring shit up.

This goes back to the speculation that it’s going to be minor things that turn into major things that cause problems for Putin - not tens of thousands of Russian men being turned into meat cubes, but a lack of eggs, or in this case, officials prosecuting a person that’s popular in a small region.

So reading around, and people are arguing about the upcoming elections in 8 weeks in Russia and the impact if Putin can’t take Avdiivka, which is just 5 miles or so out from Donetsk proper.  It would be like if the US Army had captured Austin in 2014 and then couldn’t take an Austin suburb half the size and population of Cedar Park after trying for a couple of years.

He’s publicly made Avdiivka a goal, which is dumb, because it’s a small suburb, and the Ukrainians had 8 years to prepare it, and more Russians have been killed or wounded trying to take Avdiivka than Ukrainians that actually lived in it pre-war.

Putin is still going to win his reelection, since the votes have probably already been counted, but damn, he’s liable to get another several thousand Russians killed or wounded trying to take Avdiivka.

This channel has some really good animated (real footage and satellite photos with overland animated vehicles and units) of various battles over the past two years. Kind of interesting to watch as we come up on the two year anniversary.  Really amazing how Ukraine hung on with their national guard, and how arrogant and unprepared the Russians were.  It also drives home that Russia lost so many of its best-trained and best-equipped units that Russia was so stunningly incompetent in regard to logistics.  They dumped units deep into Ukraine without any plans for a continuous logistics and reinforcement chain.  The US put on a master class in the Gulf War and in Afghanistan and Iraq (2003) in this area, and the Russians ignored it.

Some more thoughts about the current situation in Russia and its future by expert Oleksii Kopytko:

1. A wave of accidents in the housing and utilities system in dozens of cities refreshed the topic of the real state of that sector (deterioration, and even the verge of collapse). The attempt of the authorities to shift the blame provoked petitions in their defense. Promises to make large-scale investments in the system renovation have been met with questions of whether the money is available. And is it worth investing in "new territories" at the expense of worn-out "old" ones?

2. The "incident" with a unique long-range reconnaissance airplane and flying command post. Despite the Kremlin's attempts to write it all off as a mistake by the Russian Air Defense Forces, Russia is worried that the Ukrainian army has once again gained capabilities it did not have before. This leads some Russian citizens to the conclusion that if the Ukrainians have seriously pinned down the fleet on the water, and now they have begun to harass aircraft in the skies above the Sea of Azov, then in the future the situation on land will become more complicated. First in Kherson region, then in Crimea....

3. An accident at Lukoil's Nizhny Novgorod refinery (5% of Russian oil refining). The company halved gasoline production. They promise to fix it by March. Immediately a wave of comments was launched that gasoline prices would not rise, there were capacities to maneuver within the country and some exports would be closed.

However, simultaneously, a cascade of other assessments followed: the oil refinery became the first major casualty of the sanctions. In December, the same refinery had a small fire at one of its systems, which was restarted at a lower capacity. Now there is a serious breakdown. All business publications have the same message — it will not be possible to replace the equipment with Chinese ones, it is not a solution to fix it by hand. And the prognosis is that this is the first sign, and it will get worse.

4. Mass protests in Bashkiria because of the trial of one of the local activists, Fail Alsynov. Allegedly, in one of his speeches in Bashkir language, he spoke negatively about the inhabitants of the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Armenians. For this, he received a four-year colony sentence for "stirring up inter-ethnic discord" (Alsynov claims that his words were mistranslated). It turns out that storming an airport with a crowd to settle scores with Jews in Dagestan is considered a local unpunished peculiarity, while protecting the environment of one's native land and speaking the native language in Bashkiria are seen differently.

As a result, several thousand people (a figure of 5,000 is mentioned - [even up to 10,000 - AG]) protested in front of the court, ending in clashes with the police and the detention of several people.

According to the "Information Resistance" group, Bashkortostan's publicly recorded losses during the attack on Ukraine are 30% higher than Tatarstan's. And the population is the same. This is the result of the unstoppable enthusiasm of local fuhrer Radiy Khabirov, who actively sends his fellow countrymen to their deaths.

After the discontent with significant losses in Dagestan combined with the irritation of local residents due to regular blackouts, the government radically reduced sending of Dagestanis to the front. This is a bad example for other regions. And at the same time, it is a clue to people what they need to do. The authorities are afraid of protests because they don't have the forces to crush them. That is, their resources for mobilization are not as limitless as they convince everyone.

5. Gradual toughening of the rhetoric of the mobilized men's wives. They are publicly asking: convicts with multi-year sentences for serious crimes are dismissed after 6 months of service, while mobilized Russians are taken away indefinitely. Women's protests are the worst thing that can happen. So far they are very localized and do not pose a direct threat. What poses a threat is the trend. The Kremlin will need resources to extinguish it.

Summary.

It does not mean that the Russian Federation will collapse tomorrow or anything like that. It is an indicator that tension is growing inside Russia in various spheres. Disruptions and collapses will happen more often.

Combined, this creates a bad backdrop for Putin's run in March. They don't have good news. The result will not be affected, but the atmosphere will worsen.

That's why the Kremlin is so vehemently sending signals that Russia is incredibly strong, and Ukraine will fall apart tomorrow. They desperately need to maintain this myth, or else unrest will begin.

#77376

It will not fall overnight, but love seeing the cracks. At least some have cojones.

Jan 19 (Reuters) - Hundreds of supporters of a jailed rights activist staged a protest on Friday in the capital of Russia's Bashkortostan republic and police detained at least seven people, a Russian news outlet reported from the scene.
The gathering in the city of Ufa took place in defiance of the region's leader, Radiy Khabirov, who has warned of tough action against what he called extremists and traitors.
Russian-language outlet SOTA Vision published video showing police warning people through a loudhailer that they would be arrested if they took part in an unauthorised gathering.

Russia planning a large-scale offensive in the summer.

We are coming up on the second anniversary of the original “large-scale offensive”, and that was done somewhat with an element of surprise, and it was done with their best equipment and their best-trained troops and with their original logistics chain.

But they’ll conduct a large-scale offensive this summer with conscripts who are given a few weeks of training where they get to shoot a few magazines, and they’ll have T-62s and T-55s backing them up at that point, and they’ll be shuttling tank and artillery ammo around in unarmored Scooby Doo vans…

War Thunder fans are crazy about accuracy.

https://www.gamesradar.com/war-of-thunder-player-shares-classified-military-documents-because-a-tank-design-is-not-quite-right/

Quote

A War Thunder player has shared classified UK defense documents in an effort to get the development team to redesign a tank within the game.

War Thunder player Pyrophoric – who'd taken to the game's official forum in a bid to get developer Gaijin to improve the accuracy of the design of the vehicle – posted excerpts from a Challenge 2 Army Equipment Support Publication – "sort of like a user manual", according to UK Defence Journal (thanks, Eurogamer) – stating it proved the developer's version of the tank was "not quite right".

Quote

Although the accompanying images reportedly had "unclassified" stamped upon them, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence – the UK government's department responsible for implementing the UK's defense policy – allegedly told the site's moderating team that despite what the images said, the document was still classified and not for public circulation.

"We have written confirmation from MoD that this document remains classified," explained a moderator on the official War Thunder forum. "By continuing to disseminate it you are in violation of the Official Secrets Act as stated by the warning on the cover of the document, an offense which can carry up to a 14-year prison sentence if prosecuted.

Quote

"Of this you are already aware, as a service person, you have signed a declaration that you understand the act and what actions it compels you to take. Every time you post this you place us (International representatives of Gaijin), especially any UK citizens, in hot water as the warning so helpfully states that unauthorized retention of a protected document is an offense."

In order to shut down the discussion and avoid more uncomfortable conversations with government officials, moderators have now closed and locked the 319-page-long thread, and the classified images have been removed.

Quote

This is just as well, as – astonishingly – it's not the first time something like this has happened. According to a recent post by community manager Smin1080p, the "last time such a document was shared that was claimed to be 'unclassified' it was in fact still classified and was confirmed that it should never have been shared".
