In completely unsurprising news, it looks like everyone's favorite dipshits will torpedo any deal to provide funding to Ukraine at the behest of everyone's other favorite dipshit.

Seems like Russia is using the "POWs onboard" as a way to make Ukraine look bad and/or deter Ukraine from shooting down their transport planes near the border.

I was referring to the report that Russia took some senior officers off the flight.

It involves politics so won't go deep into it here, but from what I've read, only the border part was torpedoed so there's still a chance the Ukraine funding could be separated from the border bill and maybe combined with funding for Israel too.

It was a fundraiser through WarTranslated, that one is closed but whenever they finish one it doesn't take long to start another one. I don't see one right now, but here's one from another dude that is legit:

As I watch terrible photos of russian bombardment of my city of Kharkiv, I understand that we can't stop the aid flowing to Ukraine. Please consider contributing toward our current drone fundraiser here: https://t.co/0g60FVAaOnI know that, I can't get Air Defense systems, but…

I've also donated to https://www.libertyukraine.org/

But you won't get a NAFO patch with either of those. It looks like the NAFO website has other fundraisers and I imagine you can get some swag donating there: https://nafo-ofan.org/

I looked into setting up a monthly donation to NAFO a couple weeks ago when I couldn’t sleep, but didn’t love using my PayPal account (an email address I use for other accounts too). It may be paranoia but I assume these Ukrainian donation sites are prime targets for Russian hackers. I was thinking of creating a PayPal account purely to donate to Ukraine that I seed from my normal PayPal address to create a layer of separation. It’s been like 20 years since I created my PayPal account so I’m really not sure this would be effective at all. Did you think about this? If so, how’d you mitigate the risk?

I didn't really think about it. Donated with a credit card and just assumed if I got hacked, the financial institution(s) involved would fix it. There have been these kind of fundraisers going since soon after the '22 full scale invasion and I haven't heard about any fuckery going on through any of the NAFO approved/associated fundraisers.

There were very similar reports about a month ago so it’s probably true. If they’re not already, it won’t be long before they’re using multiple high altitude motherships as repeater nodes to double, triple, quadruple their reach.  The limiting factor will be flight time of the mother ships. Should be fun to watch how they continue to improve this capability

Sweden is set to join NATO by March (fingers crossed):

https://apnews.com/article/nato-sweden-turkey-hungary-enlargement-599b08d2d48b12b9e3bb19856a1d78ad

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed optimism on Friday that Sweden could be ready to join the military organization by March, after receiving positive signals this week from holdouts Hungary and Turkey.

Sweden, along with its neighbor Finland, set aside decades of military nonalignment after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 to seek protection under NATO’s collective defense umbrella. Finland has since joined, and it along with the other 30 allies must all agree for Sweden to join.

But Turkey and Hungary have held up proceedings.

“Sweden’s entry into NATO will make the whole alliance stronger,” Stoltenberg told reporters as he provided details about talks this with week with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and noted new developments in Turkey.

“The message I have received from Budapest is that the parliament will reconvene at the end of February, so we have to wait for that. But I’m absolutely confident, and I count on Hungary,” Stoltenberg said.

Initially, Hungary gave no clear reason for the delays, and Orbán had insisted that his government wouldn’t be the last to endorse Sweden. But the tone toward Stockholm hardened, as the European Commission refused to allow Hungary access to EU funds over democratic backsliding.

Budapest accused Swedish politicians of telling “blatant lies” about the state of Hungary’s democracy.

Orbán, who has broken ranks with NATO allies by adopting a Kremlin-friendly stance toward Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said Tuesday that he had invited Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to Budapest to discuss “future cooperation in the field of security and defense as allies and partners.”

Unless an emergency session of parliament is called to debate Sweden’s bid, the assembly is due to sit on Feb. 26.

To let Sweden join, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan imposed a series of conditions including a tougher stance on groups that Turkey considers to be threats to its security, like Kurdish militants and members of a network he blames for a failed coup in 2016.

Separately, but linked to his approval, Erdogan insisted on a fighter-jet deal with the United States.

On Tuesday, Turkish lawmakers finally held a vote on the issue and ratified Sweden’s accession protocol by 287 votes to 55. The Turkish government finalized the step Thursday by publishing the measure in an official gazette.

Stoltenberg welcomed the fact that on Thursday night Erdogan “gave his signature to the decision of the parliament, so now all decisions are in place in Turkey.”

Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd member once Hungary completes its procedures and the “instruments of ratification” of all allies have been received by the U.S. State Department.

I wonder if it would look something like this, or if this is just an unrelated compilation of January drone hits.

Do you mean Hungary? They weren't technically threatened with being kicked out but taking away their voting rights I think.

Probably the former. In my opinion, it was always going to happen but they just needed to be pissy about it first. Turkey did get some concessions out of Sweden first.

The EU's threats to take away voting rights from Hungary were supposedly separate from the NATO thing. Those were due to Hungary trying to block EU aid to Ukraine.

The two issues, of course, are tied at the hip.

So there’s footage out there of the cargo plane wreck (drone footage and otherwise), and only a handful of bodies.  If there were 65 dead Ukrainian POWs, we would have seen footage of it immediately as Russia would have spread it everywhere, and the bodies would have been in the third party footage.

And as others pointed out, the Russian official statements said there were six crew members and three Russian soldiers.  Three soldiers to guard 65 POWs?

If there were POWs on the plane (there weren’t), it would just be Russia admitting to another war crime since they didn’t notify Ukraine that they were transporting POWs near the front. So it’s a dumb lie or a war crime #russia

For the NATO vote, Turkey got approval for the sale of F-16 block 70s.  At the same time, Greece got approval for F-35s.  The Foreign Military Sales notices dropped at the same time for both, clear sop to Greece.

Turkey’s S400 purchase remains one of the dumbest technically and politically I can think of. They got booted as an F-35 partner for that one.

Hungary has really been digging in.  Orban just keeps getting more isolated and he’s picking more fights to shore up his home support.

It’s not chess, and he’s not stupid. He is incredibly corrupt and get billions from China and Russia. He’s a populist and has positioned himself as some sort of rogue hero who only stands up for Ukrainian interests, and he no longer holds real elections. He understands how limited both the EU and NATO are when it comes to enemies inside the house and has no compunctions exploiting that.

Good and accurate explainer on the state of play within the EU on Hungary:

I've spent the week meeting diplomats in Brussels ahead of Feb 1st European Council. There is a mix of frustration and disbelief that this one will... once again be about Viktor Orban. But the tone on how to deal with the Hungarian premier has changed. Patience is exhausted. 🧵

Before anyone asks— the EU itself is extremely weak and biased towards consensus but there are some difficult to impose serious options as outlined here.

NATO does not have those and is even more biased to consensus.

Just like with how some states in the US contribute more to federal coffers than they receive and others receive more than they contribute, the same is true here.  Hungary receives more than they contribute to the EU, and it’s actually equal to a few percentage points of their GDP, so it’s not insignificant, especially if his economy is hurting

If the EU members held that money back from Hungary and/or took away Hungary’s voting rights, I’m guessing he will cave, especially now that he’s flying solo at this point.

EU subsidies are more than just the GDP for Hungary, they play an outsize role in his corrupt income streams.  EU subsidies are ideal for robbing because they aren’t “your” people’s money and because Brussels is so reliant on consensus that even getting a mild statement is difficult. There are few monitoring mechanisms. This pattern repeats itself with all corrupt CE and Balkan members.

The EU was designed for high-trust, transparent democracies and so people like Orban break the system.
