I'd assume the purchase isn't just the jets but all of the ammo and support materials as well.

Like million dollar ball bearings and antifreeze.

And don't forget the toilets.

But it also probably includes pilot training. This is not just flight school. It is also English training, with costs of chasing chicks in San Antonio, etc.

That shit ain't cheap. If memory is correct you train 4 pilots per aircraft and two ground support crew per aircraft. Not sure what it is for the 35.

We’ve needed a light(er) tank since they retired the Sheridan in the 90s. The Abrams is amazing, but it’s massive, and hard to get in theater (unless you have a port nearby) and you have to be careful with bridges, etc.

Serious (and dumb) question:  Can’t the Bradley do this job awful close?  Doesn’t have a gun that can kill Russian shitbox tanks straight up, but they’ve been able to team up and roger them real good.

Ukraine has had a corruption problem for decades. I see an article, like this, as a sign it is working to fix it. However, it is likely to be thrown in the face of supporters of Ukrainian freedom.

Tad disingenuous when Ukraine was a Soviet/RU vassal until Maidan in 2014. They are around a decade into erasing Soviet/RU culture.

I do see that there is a niche for the Booker. I’m sure the 105 mm HE rounds can take care of some dug in bad guys more effectively and from a greater distance more safely than the Bradley up close - and after watching a Bradley chain cannon put the hurt on a Russian tank, I would bet we now have a very decent AP round that could obtain a turret toss or two. Israel used 105 cannons to take out T-72s in Beka (sp?) Valley fight in the 80s.   I would bet that some big brains improved the 105 ammo over the years as well. Like comparing the best 9 mm handgun rounds now to 9 mm rounds I shot in the 70s.  They are just way better now.

A C-17 can fit two of those (as opposed to three Bradleys), so they can quickly Globemaster them to a short runway near the tussle.

MANPADS would still be an issue, but if you want maximum range for a big Storm Shadow launch, eliminating S300/400 radars would let you fly right up to the line before launching without worrying about S300/400 shooting you down over your own territory.

That attack on the facility in Saint Petersburg is nuts.  That’s Putin’s hometown and just a month out from his next “election”, and they are able to hit a very precise target deep inside Russia, in Putin’s hometown.  I doubt they’d be wasting larger drones or missiles on an attack that deep (and that risky if it hit a civilian building like apartments or hospital or schools) if they weren’t sure that Russia had moved their air defense to Ukraine (more likely Crimea) and they have confidence in the precision. That lack of AD coverage means the Russians are running low on air defense as well and can’t replace it fast enough (hello sanctions).

And hitting oil & gas facilities, knowing most Western companies left and can’t readily repair it is a pretty solid choice for a lot of reasons (mostly economic).

Meanwhile, the Russians are just hitting apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, and restaurants, which can be readily rebuilt (but not the lives lost).

I’ve seen some talking heads saying it’s risky since it plays into Putin’s hands about Ukraine being dangerous, but others point out that it’s not a good look if Putin can’t keep Ukraine from hitting that deep into Russia two years into the Special Military Operation.  And a lot of Russians have been able to consciously ignore the war, but now it’s right there in front of them, and if it’s going this poorly and Putin tries a mass roundup, it’ll cause a lot of debate/protest.

Ukraine's new 100-mile bomb from Boeing is ready, sources say
WASHINGTON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - After successful testing in the U.S., Ukraine will soon receive it first big batch of long-range missiles made by Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab that promise to extend its range deep into Russian-held territory, according to sources familiar with the matter.

They could arrive "on the battlefield" as soon as Wednesday, Politico reported.

Ukraine needs Boeing's Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) to augment the limited number of 100-mile range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) rockets the U.S. has sent.

The glide-bomb will allow Ukraine's military to hit targets at twice the distance reachable by the rockets it now fires from the U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and could force Russia to move supplies even farther from the front lines.

Tests of newly built GLSDB occurred on Jan. 16 at the Eglin Air Force Base test range in Florida, a person familiar with the test and two people briefed told Reuters, enabling shipments to begin. The people briefed on the test said six rockets were fired as a part of the early morning test over the Gulf of Mexico.

The plan was for launchers and dozens of warheads to move to Ukraine via an air transport, the person familiar with the test and one of people briefed said.

The timing of the delivery and their ultimate deployment has been secret to preserve the element of surprise. A Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment.

For the Biden administration, the decision to send the GLSDB to Ukraine represents an alternative ATACMS missile, which the administration has so far provided in only small numbers.

Ukraine's supply of ATACMS has been depleted by use.

The new glide bombs, while not as powerful, are much cheaper, smaller and easier to deploy than ATACMS, making them well suited for much of what Ukraine hopes to accomplish: disrupting Russian operations and creating a tactical advantage.

"It's long past time to finding creative means to provide the capability and capacity needed to strike deep and often behind Russian lines," said Tom Karako, a weapons and security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

When Boeing pitched the weapon to commanders last year, they presented an "expedited nine-month option" for delivery that required exempting the contractor from an in-depth review that ensures the Pentagon is getting the best deal possible.

The Pentagon said publicly that funding was approved in February, a contract to begin production was inked the following month, U.S. officials have told Reuters.

Because GLSDB has already been paid for, the weapon can avoid the recent Congressional funding dispute over continued weapons shipments to Ukraine.
Boeing, the prime contractor for the weapon, did not respond to a request for comment.
