Good talk about drones and deterrents.  The Ukrainians put a whole buncha repurposed cel phones out on fence posts.  Networked together they can hear the drones and coordinate anti aircraft fire.  Very economical.

Here's a borderline propaganda piece from Reuters last week:

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-is-master-all-he-surveys-russians-head-polls-2024-03-15/

Putin casts the war as part of an existential battle with a declining and decadent West which he says humiliated Russia after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 by encroaching on what Putin considers to be Moscow's sphere of influence, including Ukraine.
That appeals to many Russians who are suspicious about the West's politics and intentions, if not its consumer goods. Top Kremlin officials, some sporting sweatshirts bearing the words "Putin's Team", speak openly of war with NATO.
Putin's approval rating is currently 86%, up from 71% shortly before the invasion of Ukraine, according to Levada Centre, a respected Russian pollster. Putin's rating also jumped during the 2008 war with Georgia and the 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
Russian television and a sophisticated social media operation project Putin as a robust patriot and deride Western leaders such as Biden as weak, foolish and deceitful.
"For many Russians, who are partly inspired by propaganda but most importantly by their own inner convictions, Russia is in an age-old struggle with the West - and what is currently happening is an episode in this struggle," Alexei Levinson, head of sociocultural research at Levada, told Reuters.
"Those who express such feelings in our surveys consider themselves to be participants in some way in this struggle with the West. They are like soccer fans who imagine they are participants in the soccer match."

Putin’s 87 percent victory is the most clearly and ostentatiously falsified in Russian history.  In 2018 he was satisfied with “only” 77 percent and in 2012 he settled for a mere 64. The message being sent is clear, that wartime Russia is fully and completely behind him.

It will be interesting to see how Russians react to record oil exports to China while they face shortages and oil rationing at home.

And in response to the event of "Russian fuckery just fucked us," Germany's solution will be some version of "so.....seems like we need to suck Russia's dick even HARDER, and tie ourselves to Russia even MORE intensely."

Germany has made a shitload of poor choices, stacked one on top of the other, for decades.  "Being friendly with Russia" is #1 on that list.  The leopards always get around to eating your face.  Always.

Agree. High on the list is putting a bolted-on shroud on the underside of an Audi A6, requiring removal to access the oil drain plug.

And now they’re making even worse ones!

The shroud prevents leaking oil from accumulating on the garage floor, and improves aerodynamics.

The Porsche 944S required a lift to replace the oil filter; the wheels had to drop down all the away for proper access.  It also required a ~ 30" screwdriver to change the lower radiator hose; it could only be accessed from the top of the engine.  It was a marvel of engineering, but impossible to maintain without the special set of Porsche tools.

Not meant for weekend warrior maintenance.

American manufacturers did the shroud thing in the 90’s and had enough sense to put in a flap to access the oil filter.

If you hold you tongue just right you can remove the shroud from my son's BMW 328 and pour the oil back into the engine.

Was.   They haven't made them since 1991 and only made about 170,000 in total.   About half of those got imported to the U.S. and I don't recollect seeing one for quite some time.
