Russian forces have started assaults and recon at another part of the northern border, this time near Sotnyts'kyi Kozachok in the Kharkiv region. Fighting is underway.

We looked at the biggest military bases on land, abt 87, to understand why experts say that out of 5 tanks Russia sends to the UKR font 4 are used/refurbished. "86% of 1530 tanks delivered were refurbished tanks from storage". Michael Gjerstad,@IISS_org. Stocks aren't bottomless

What experts at @IISS and @RUSI say - that the next two-year window will be crucial to show whether Russia can replenish tanks losses - mirrors our analysis: Fast shrinking & hyperdependence on old stocks, puts pressure on Putin, producing new tanks for the front

New tanks, Putin's keen to make. And fast. Many many of them. @Marina_Miron at the Department of War Studies King's College London tells us that Russia could face lacks in western components to do so. The only option: refurbish old ones...

In the end, big thanks goes to @picterra (which helped us and earlier the @nytimes reporing to count Gaza bomb craters) and @high_marsed for the support & explainer on the vehicle types and trends - Article here: https://t.co/F8GdRWdBtl

Ukraine might have launched ukrshahed drones at the Redkinsky Experimental Plant in the Tver Region. The plant has been attacked by drones more than once since the beginning of the war. It is claimed to produce aviation fuel.

Agreed, very cool.

I would hate to be one of the teams playing against Ukraine.  But they're all competitors and the best way to respect them and honor them, is to play as tough as you can.

Yep.  There was a very real possibility in '22 that the US would have been playing Ukraine in the Group Stage of the WC had Ukraine not lost their final play in match.  Would've been one of the only times I've ever cheered for a draw.

That would be crazy, and not sure what Lil Kim will do when some of his better-trained units start dying in large numbers.  He has nothing to lose, given the sanctions against him, other than manpower.

They aren’t going to be “rebuilding” anything either, at least anything civilian-related. They are probably there because they are trained and know how to use Soviet equipment, and they are probably going to be helping with bridging/river work and setting up fortifications.

I think the bigger thing is that this shows how poorly-trained Russia’s military is right now and that they are struggling for cannon fodder.  Relying on North Korea to fill their engineering shortage means that Russia is unable to spend the time to properly train engineers/sappers/etc.   When they round up hundreds of thousands of conscripts, there are going to be plenty of men with some kind of training that’s conducive to being a combat engineer, but they are instead sending them to the front.   That’s some desperation right there.

not to get all depressing here, but I foresee in the very near future (3 or less years) an entire slew of PTSD Ukrainian drone pilots.

I get that they have absolutely got to stop the threat, and that Russian troops just keep coming, but psychologically there is a massive difference between a soldier shooting at an enemy or a group of enemies, and seeing a few of them fall- even ones you aimed at, but being able to have a little spot in your mind saying "theres a chance that guy wasnt hurt bad, and even if he was, someone else killed him"  and being able to process that as someone you might not have killed....

vs now, when the drone operator sees their target in high definition, and then kamikaze's into that target, boom and it never moves again.  there is zero chance the operators mind doesnt categorize that as a person they directly killed.   and yes... there is that 5% of the population that can do that over and over again without any mental remorse... maybe another 75% that can totally rationalize it and set it aside in their mind.   but that other 20% is where you start having the upticks of suicide's.

even the POS German's Einzatsgruppen had to stop using their individual kill squads that they started using in '39 and '40 that were executing "undesirables"... its the reason the Germans ended up with the final solution because 1. using bullets was getting expensive. and 2. their execution squad suicide rates were 20x higher than any other army units.

I want to be wrong, but I really, really hope Ukraine has these guys talking to psychiatrists every 2 weeks or so... they have got to defend their homeland, but this has got to be wearing heavily on their minds.

An aside on this - they only did this a few times with the B-47.  They proved it could be done, but then they realize the maneuver was putting too much stress on the airframes and significantly decreasing their service lives.  So no practice toss bombing anymore.

Yup.  No matter how many times you call people "orcs" to justify killing them, deep down you know you're still killing people.  It doesn't negate the necessity, but it doesn't negate the psychological effects either.

TLDR; "War is hell."

Always has been, always will be.  It's why pieces of shit like Putin shouldn't fucking start shit like this.  But we live in a world where pieces of shit end up in positions of power....and start shit like this.  Or different shit that also ends in warfare.

Killing thousands of Russians sucks.

But not killing them, and letting them overrun your country, depriving everyone in it of a future of self-determination, and also committing a parade of horrors in the process, sucks even more.

"War" is often the second-shittiest option, right ahead of "not fighting back."

I think plenty of people will have absolutely no problem killing Russians with drones - you are talking about blips on a TV screen, and if you don’t remove those blips from the battlefield, they could harm your human wife or human mother.  In fact, it might even turn into a videogame in and of itself with many people. There are probably some people who have human feelings though, so they might be bothered.

There was a nearly identical study that came out during the heyday of Q-Anon back in 2018 that showed a very similar result.

Quote

New research by Josh Hart, associate professor of psychology, suggests that people with certain personality traits and cognitive styles are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories.

"These people tend to be more suspicious, untrusting, eccentric, needing to feel special, with a tendency to regard the world as an inherently dangerous place," Hart said. "They are also more likely to detect meaningful patterns where they might not exist. People who are reluctant to believe in conspiracy theories tend to have the opposite qualities."

Our results clearly showed that the strongest predictor of conspiracy belief was a constellation of personality characteristics collectively referred to as 'schizotypy,' Hart said.

The trait borrows its name from schizophrenia, but it does not imply a clinical diagnosis.

Hart's study also showed that conspiracists had distinct cognitive tendencies: they were more likely than nonbelievers to judge nonsensical statements as profound.

In turn, they were more likely to say that nonhuman objects -- triangle shapes moving around on a computer screen -- were acting intentionally.

"In other words, they inferred meaning and motive where others would not," he said.

While it’s more about breaking up the CSTO, we could be throwing our weight around as well - Turkey isn’t interested in cratering their economy by joining with North Korea and Russia (especially now that NATO and Ukraine are going to be dominating the Black Sea). This could be us….I don’t want to say putting them in their place, but us just saying that we don’t give a shit about past issues, we have bigger fish to fry.
