Ukrainian forces are in control of Sudzha gas measuring station in Kursk oblast which is a key border facility for transporting Russian gas into Europe.

I would have to imagine this was the actual objective here, to capture and subsequently destroy this station.

(A video is embedded at the end of the blurb in a Tweet, which I won't post because Elon.)

Video footage published over the weekend on the Telegram channel of the pro-Kremlin milblogger Kirill Fedorov and shared by Ukrainian official Anton Gerashchenko on Monday shows a stricken Russian fighter aircraft falling out of the sky towards a blanket of thick clouds, an engine apparently on fire.

The aircraft is too far away to definitively identify the type, but its silhouette is characteristic of the Sukhoi Su-27 multirole fighter (NATO: Flanker) or one of its modernized and upgraded derivatives, the Su-30 / Su-35 fighter or Su-34 tactical bomber; all of which have been deployed during Russia’s war in Ukraine.

After a few seconds the camera turns to show the pilot in helmet, visor and oxygen mask dangling from his chute. As he descends, he tears off his oxygen mask, his face blurred to prevent identification, and screams “They f***ing shot us down!”

It is not exactly clear when and where the video was taken, nor who exactly “they” were. According to a BBC report earlier this year almost 350 Russian fighters, ground attack aircraft and tactical bombers have been shot down over the battlefield during the last two and a half years. These have been by both Ukrainian air defense assets and “friendly fire” incidents.

A resident of Sudzha basically confirming Ukrainian presence inside the town:

“I was just in the center. Everything is more or less intact. The prosecutor's office is destroyed. The city administration is flying the Ukrainian flag. There are many soldiers and equipment. A soldier called me over, checked my documents, and wasn't rude. I asked, "What should we do?" He said, "Learn the Ukrainian anthem and prepare for a referendum." To be honest, I no longer care which flag we live under. The main thing is to have peace. If our own can't protect us, maybe the Ukrainians can.”

shit. load up 10 tanker trucks, 5 tanks and 10 bradleys and make a run for Moscow.... whats the worst that could happen?  its not like Russia had any fucking planning on the possibility of their former underlings saying fuck it and making a Wagner run ... which means they literally have zero defense against it. and no fucking fighter planes near enough to do anything because they are located in bases far from the front now.

I think Ukraine is laying the groundwork to sue for peace.  They will take some territory in Russia, treat the locals well, do their damndest to not destroy civilian infrastructure, and tell the Russians to get the fuck out of their country, and we'll give you back your territories.

BETHLEHEM — FBI agents and State Police on Wednesday descended on the home of Scott Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector who in June had his passport seized by the U.S. Department of State as he attempted to fly to Russia for a conference.

Shortly after noon, marked and unmarked State Police vehicles could be seen at Ritter’s Dover Drive home. It was unclear if Ritter was at the residence; efforts to reach him by phone for comment were not successful. Two cars remained in the home's driveway after officers moved in and out of the house Wednesday.

Ritter appears to be in the area: On Tuesday, he posted a photograph of himself on X — the website formerly known as Twitter — alongside independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been in an Albany courtroom this week while lawyers argue over whether he should be allowed on the November ballot in New York.

“Burgers with Bobby!,” wrote Ritter, a repeat guest on Kennedy's podcast; the photo appeared to be taken at a restaurant across from Albany Medical Center Hospital.

The FBI confirmed “law enforcement activity in connection with an ongoing federal investigation,” but declined further comment. State Police said troopers were aiding the investigation.

FBI spokeswoman Sarah Ruane arrived at Ritter’s house just before 4 p.m. and told the assembled media that no one was currently in custody and that she could not provide information beyond the bureau’s initial statement. She was seen speaking with an FBI attorney at the scene before entering the house.

WNYT-Channel 13 first reported on the raid.

Only two months ago, Customs and Border Protection officers stopped Ritter at John F. Kennedy International Airport and confiscated his passport book. The reasons for that seizure remain unclear; Ritter has in recent years become a more passionate supporter of Russia as it has pursued its invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking on former Fox News host Andrew Napolitano’s podcast in June, Ritter said three uniformed Customs and Border Protection agents stopped him as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul on his way to Russia.

Ritter said the agents explained they had been told to seize his passport at the request of the State Department. The agents took the document and offered no further explanation for why they were taking it, Ritter said, adding that they did not give him a receipt. His bags were removed from the plane and he was escorted out of the airport’s security area.

At the time, the State Department declined to discuss Ritter’s case.

The State Department can revoke passports for a variety of situations including laws and regulations affecting passport usage by individuals with active warrants or criminal records, fraud concerns, tax debt and child support arrears.

Ritter has a criminal history unconnected to his public stances on foreign policy: He was convicted in 2011 in Monroe County, Penn. after Barrett Township police presented evidence that in 2009 he had masturbated in front of a webcam being viewed by an undercover officer who was posing as a 15-year-old girl. He served three years behind bars.

That investigation was not Ritter’s first brush with the law involving allegations of sexual interest in children. In 2001, he was caught in a police sting in which officers said he had tried to lure a Colonie police officer posing as a 16-year-old girl to a Burger King in Menands. The case was effectively dismissed and records were sealed, but information about that incident emerged in 2003.

At the time, Ritter suggested that the case was a smear campaign designed to silence him after he began speaking out against the war in Iraq, including his correct assertion that the U.S. would not uncover significant weapons of mass destruction after it invaded.

In the years since he was released from prison, Ritter has become an enthusiastic supporter of Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the war with Ukraine, likening the besieged country to a “rabid dog” and calling the invasion a preemptive act of self-defense. He has been a regular commentator on RT, a Russian state-owned media outlet.

Ritter’s street was quiet Wednesday afternoon as authorities came and went from his house. One neighbor who declined to give her name said that while she did not agree with his position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or that he traveled to the country to promote a book, she thought his conviction for child sex offenses was “entrapment.”

“He’s not creepy or anything,” she said. “He’s a good neighbor.”

Jim Hoffman, who has lived across the street from Ritter for two decades, said that he has kept a low profile in the neighborhood.

He also recalled the condemnation Ritter received for his opposition to the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

He said that he could not recall seeing a police presence outside of the house before, but remembered television news crews outside Ritter's home when he came out against the invasion.

“When he came out against the Iraq War back in early 2000s, he was vilified everywhere,” Hoffman said. “Honestly, he was right. He said there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.”

https://english.nv.ua/nation/f-16s-can-operate-from-any-ukrainian-airfield-with-new-weapons-50440999.html

With the weapons for the F-16 that Ukraine received, they will be able to operate from any airfield in the country, aviation expert and leading researcher of the State Aviation Museum Valeriy Romanenko said in an interview with Radio NV on Aug. 7.

"With the air-to-air missiles we have, any airfield can accommodate the fighters because they're half the weight. If fully loaded with 6.5 tons of weapons, only a few of our airfields can handle them due to our tiled surfaces, as these planes usually operate from asphalted, smooth runways. But with half the weapons, the landing gear isn't heavily loaded, and they can operate from almost any airfield in Ukraine," the aviation expert explained on Radio NV.

Reporter: Mr. Kennedy, if you were elected President, would you reach out to Putin about Ukraine?

RFK Jr: It’s funny you ask that, I’ve talked with Vladimir Putin several times over the years.  The last time we spoke was around August or September of 2021, and I remember him asking me if I thought NATO would get involved if he made a move on taking all of Ukraine.  I told him that they wouldn’t lift a finger or supply Ukraine with a single bullet, and that the Ukrainians probably wouldn’t resist and would even welcome him with open arms.

Yeah, I don’t know how Putin can sell this if Ukraine continues to hold Russian territory.  Russia truly grabbed the tiger’s tale and now can’t let go.  There’s rumors that the Ukrainians are doing this with F-16s providing limited support, and they may stop within range of their own artillery for when Russia gets real non-border troops there to fight back.

Meanwhile, Thujone is drawing up Russian battle plans.

Why was this possible?1. Failure of Russian military intelligence or leadership2. Inadequate Russian border forces3. Ukraine deciding to commit significant forces in Kursk instead of strengthening the east in order to stop the Russians in Toretsk and Pokrovsk directions2/

The actual goals are still unclear. Ukraine might try to shift some of the Russian focus from other areas to Kursk. Ukraine may also seek better positions for future negotiations, if the purpose of the operation is to take over and hold land areas for a longer period of time. 3/

The Kursk operation may also have longer-lasting effects, as it likely forces Russia to commit even more troops to the border. Russia has most likely expected only limited-scale attacks on border villages, not a stronger and wider offensive by elements of multiple brigades. 4/

Besides the scale, it’s notable that the current Kursk offensive isn’t conducted by Russian volunteer units, like the previous ones. We actually have not yet seen proof of Russian Volunteer Corps or Freedom of Russia Legion participating in it. 5/

The goal should be to blitzkrieg with a pincer movement. Capture lots of forces and equipment and then get the hell out. So basically, Ukraine should try to severely weaken and degrade Russian forces which will take Russia a long time to recover from. Russia desperately needs this to be a war of attrition. Ukraine should change the dynamic with this attack.

Agree, would love to see a swing and encirclement. And don't care if F-16's are used. Better to use older russian shit to demonstrate hey Ivan, even with your older gear we can kick your ass.

This war reminds us that defense is a lot easier than offense.  So Ukraine takes as much Russian land as they can before Russia moves forces in, then grinds Russia down as they try to take their own land back?

US reaching out to Ukraine over reports of Kursk region incursion, White House says

by Kateryna Denisova August 7, 2024 8:35 PM 2 min read

U.S. officials are reaching out to their Ukrainian counterparts "to get a little better understanding" of the situation in Russia's Kursk region, where clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces are currently taking place, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Aug. 7.

Ukrainian forces crossed the border into the Kursk region on Aug. 6, resulting in clashes on Russian soil that have continued into the following day, Russian officials say.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the incursion as a "large-scale provocation," while Russian Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed on Aug. 7 that Ukraine's "advance in the Kursk direction was halted." Kyiv has not commented on the fighting in the area.

At a press conference on Aug. 7, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said it was "a bit rich for (Russia) to call it a provocation" in light of the more than 10 years that Russia has violated Ukraine's territorial sovereignty.

"I'll let the Ukrainians speak to their operations one way or the other.  That’s most appropriate," Kirby said.

Miller acknowledged that the U.S. did not know about the incursion before it happened but said "it's not unusual for the Ukrainians not to notify us of their exact tactics before they execute them, it's a war that they are conducting."

Washington hasn't changed its policy of allowing Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons "to target imminent threats just across the border," Kirby said. Separately, Miller said that the incursion had not violated U.S. policy.

When Russia launched its intensified offensive against Kharkiv Oblast in May, a number of countries said they had lifted restrictions on the use of Western-provided weapons against military targets inside Russia.

The U.S. granted Kyiv limited permission to use certain American weapons to strike Russian targets near the region's border.

The Kursk region lies on the border with Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, which has been experiencing daily attacks since Russian troops were pushed out of the oblast and back across the border in April 2022.

Over the past day, Moscow's troops have increased aviation activity near the border areas of Sumy Oblast, dropping about 30 guided aerial bombs on the settlements, Ukraine's General Staff said in its latest update. The local authorities ordered a further mandatory evacuation of border settlements.

We want to think some bad ass liberal democrat poet/outsider/oppostion leader is going to somehow take over when Putin goes. But not one of them has a power base, is a real threat, or the military behind him. I think the best case scenario will be either military who is tired of this shit in Ukraine and being embarrased (yeah, they know their gear sucks) or a hardline in the FSB. Either way more people fall out of windows.
