2/9 On the eighth day of Ukraine's operation in Kursk, russia has yet to halt Ukraine's advancement, despite a noticeable slowdown due to the arrival of russian reinforcements.
4/9 Dyumin, Putin's former bodyguard and a potential successor, has been dispatched to synchronize the actions of the russian Armed Forces with law enforcement agencies and local authorities. This underscores the high significance of the situation to Putin.

Based on this, I'm pretty sure you are correct

The AFU has reportedly reached the eastern outskirts of Korenevo. Fighting is ongoing. Previously, the AFU was already conducting offensive operations in this area.

Korenevo is north and west of the western village of Lyubimivka.  What is confusing is that there also appears to be an eastern village, very close to Kursk proper with the same name (this might be a difference in Ukrainian spellings and Russian).

There are a lot of these little towns with the same name.

The 2 different Lyubimovka's are shown directionally from the Kurskaya Nuclear Power Plant, one ~ 12 miles south, which is where I think is Ukraine, and the other about 23 miles north.

My color code; the orange labels are where Ukraine is/has been (maybe just attacked, not necessarily troops on the ground) and the red labels are where contract between UK-RU has been reported.

The green area is the 700' elevation plateau, the highest ground other than the area southeast of the Sudzha-Kurst Road (R200).

The light blue lines are railroads.

The light blue area is my guestimate of what territory Ukraine "holds", ~ 800 Sq Km. Along the road towards Lgov, it may just be a few recon vehicles and troops driving down the road looking at the farms along the way.

Keep in mind, on White Tail opening weekend, one could argue that the "Texas Militia has taken over the state", given the large numbers of armed and camo'd green men with provisions for an extended stay.

What is Ukraine doing here?

Generally, Ukraine wants to push Russia's glide bombing attacks further rom the border. Not sure if this area fits that description.

A hell of a bargaining chip when it comes time to sort all this out..

This area is only ~ 200 miles east of Kyiv, and 300 miles SE of Moscow. (Austin between Dallas and the Valley), a big cork between Russia & Ukraine, with a Nuke, the a big fucking Ga$ line. Between this area and Balarus-Ukraine border to the west, there is hardly any infrastruture. Towards the east, their is rail between Kurst and Belgorod. The terrain itself looks more like the Columbus-La Grange without any significant geographical features, towns in small river valleys surrounded by farm land.

Talk about a giant cock roaches with tanks and armor and F-16's. Other than carpet bombing the area, not sure how Russia can get them out.

Tanks pulling up at a Denny's for breakfast? I love it!!!

FYI, it is the same Russian spelling for both towns. It's easier to search for these towns in Cyrillic because there is quite a bit of variation in the transliterated spelling (even within Google).  Technically, Ukraine has towns with the same name as well, although the Ukrainian alphabet is slightly different so there is a minor variation in spelling. A literal translation might be something like Town of Love ("lyubim" means "we love", "ovka" is used here to denote a town or place name). But since this is Russia, I'd just call it Love Shack.

Probably has a glory hole or two.

full thread:

1/ The Russian publication 'Interesting Stories' has published a lengthy interview with a former Russian army officer who opposed the invasion of Ukraine. He explains how the Ukrainians were able to invade the Kursk region so easily. Here are some extracts. ⬇️
2/ The former officer comments that the Russian Volunteer Corps and Freedom of Russia Legion began mounting raids into the Kursk region in March 2024. This was done to observe "how quickly they respond to your arrival, how many forces are there, where, what, how."
3/ While the Ukrainians were gathering intelligence on the ground, the officer says, the Russians didn't react: "what changed on our side [on the border] in six months? Fucking nothing."
4/ And when all these raids on the Kursk direction started, the border guards only had light firearms, no heavy equipment, and the border was practically always open. But nothing changed in six months.
5/ Authorities allocated money to strengthen the border: ‘dragon’s teeth,’ trenches were supposedly dug — but mostly, the money, as usual, was fucked up [i.e. stolen]."
6/ Those on the border knew something was up, he says, but were brushed off by the general command. "As usual, all requests up the chain were met with: ‘We have everything under control; intelligence reports that nothing has been noticed.’"
7/ When the Ukrainians began their offensive, "they arrived in groups and just started pushing forward without securing positions. Just further and further — one swift push."
8/ "Because if they were to secure positions, it would give us more time and opportunities to bring in troops to stop them. So they just push forward as fast as possible, while ours are talking shit, arguing, showing up, and filming reports.
9/ "As they say in the army: ‘If you want to defeat Russia, declare war, and it will fuck itself up with inspections.’"
10/ The main Ukrainian force has been preceded by a screening force of long-range sabotage and reconnaissance groups (DRGs) which "go even further — and start digging in. And when the Russian troops finally show up, the DRGs start attacking them."
11/ "In this situation, our forces didn’t just respond late — they didn’t respond [properly] at all ... they surrender in whole packs, because, firstly, the conscripts don’t know how to fight, and secondly, they don’t have the weapons to repel such attacks."
12/ The former officer says that the Ukrainian offensive has been aided by catastrophically poor Russian command decisions, such as the sending of hundreds of troops in a convoy that was obliterated by HIMARS strikes at Rylsk on the night of 9 August.
13/ "At least on the front line, after some time and massive losses, they figured out that driving in a convoy is suicide. But those sitting here still drive in convoys and think they’re going to a parade.
14/ "The AFU has drones, has rockets — what kind of fucking idiot would lead a convoy in this case, and one that’s even being filmed for the news. That’s why the guys died, without even getting there."
15/ He doubts that the Ukrainians will go much further into Russia, as the line of the breakthrough is small and there is a significant risk of encirclement. "As soon as our forces start doing something right and pull in reserves, they can block the [AFU] approaches from Ukraine.
16/ "The Russian army will encircle them, stop the flow of resources, then just tighten the ring and destroy them all."

As for the local civilians, the former officer believes they will be written off by the Russian authorities.
17/ "Since this is Russia, we won’t give a fuck about the civilians left there. It’s already clear that the locals have been abandoned to fend for themselves — people there are on their own.
18/ "They’ll level everything with artillery and aviation: after all, what is Kursk Oblast compared to Russia?”

The first inclination is idea that the Ukrainians are trading eastern positions to put this pressure on Russia in north.  A thought did occur to me, what if they are also attempting to lure Russian forces out of entrenched positions in the East?  Just a thought anyway.

That is an effective strategy.  Trade small gains in ground for attrition, and inability for gaining force to effectively secure positions.

Interesting, I wonder if this has to do with the other Incursion from a couple of days ago into Belgorod that we've since heard little about.

A regional emergency situation regime has been declared in the Belgorod Region, with a subsequent appeal to the government commission with a request to declare a federal emergency, said the region's governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov. https://t.co/ITbbGElyUY

Ukraine has deployed more than 30 robot dogs in the fighting in Donbas, Bild has said

The publication says that since the front line is changing very slowly and the fighting has become trench warfare, Ukrainian troops have deployed robot dogs, which, thanks to their four paws, are highly maneuverable, can scout the area for booby traps and detect enemy movements.

Robot dogs move silently at a speed of 15 km/h and operate within a 3.5 km radius of the enemy for a maximum of five hours at a cost of €4,000 to €8,000.

If those are anything like the Boston dynamics machines, those are really a crazy augment for a battlefield. It can run supplies or advance scout a route, and doesn't really give a shit about frag blast as long as the structure survives. The brushless motors are super durable and they're reinforced to hell, I'd bet those things make great ammo gophers

Edit: just to underscore how durable these things are, one is stationed at the base of each Starship test in Boca Chica to go visually inspect things before people approach. That's CRAZY durable to take being in the blast wave of an orbital class rocket engine assembly

Extended Ukrainian control of the Kursk region has been confirmed on two more axis. The southeastern area of Sudzha almost up to Gir'i is under Ukrainian control. Most of the Sudzha district is now under Ukrainian control.

Furthermore, Ukrainian vehicles have been seen further north and are now confirmed more than 30 km from the border.

On a side note, that marks also the first time that Ukrainian forces have entered the Lgovsky District at the southern end (Green area in screenshot 2).

Lithuania and Poland have both blocked all military access to that enclave.  which works the other way as well, not allowing military to leave.

The only way they could be transferred is via an airplane route that requires them to fly out over the Baltic, follow an international air boundry route until they get to Russian airspace over St Pete.   Or they have to take a boat from the harbor and sort of mirror the same water route as the planes do.

seems like it would take them more than 7 days to organize a military transfer to a boat that can handle that many troops, and of course their equipment and then sail to St Pete, offload and then make a run towards Kursk.

These are Russians after all, they dont take a dump without a plan... and the logistics say their planning sucks ass and is slow as fuck and would take 2+ weeks to be put into real world action,

They’re between $4-$8k a piece. Sounds pretty damn cheap to me considering they can probably carry a lot of explosive material. I like to picture it walking into a building with a stack of anti-tank mines on its back, reaching around to grab one, setting it on the ground, and then stepping on the pressure trigger.
