At this point, might as well, the Ukrainians have called the Russian's nuclear bluff.  Russian nuclear doctrine is that if the sovereignty of Russia is in any way threatened they will respond with nuclear weapons.  I can't think of a bigger threat, than, you know, being invaded and partly occupied, no matter how small.  This is still a dangerous period because Putin may well use a tactical nuke on the field, but in Russia, and justify it by his claims to sovereignty.

I don't think he will do it, because we've told him if does, we are in it.  However, nuking his own country was probably actually never clearly communicated (who'd have thunk it?)

For those that have not read it, as @Gatorubet noted, it is a first hand account of what it is like to be in the Russian army, it will blow you away.  Louis Gossett Jr making Richard Gere do pullups and pushups in the rain is romper room as a comparison.

He’s already abandoned Russian civilians in the Kursk region, and the concrete bunkers are being built for Russian soldiers, not civilians.  Nuking Russian territory for a war he proudly started would not go over well, because all of the border regions would start shitting themselves over the thought of Ukraine invading and them getting nuked. If Ukraine starts sending troops into other Russian oblasts, those oblasts are liable to declare themselves independent in hopes of the international community preventing them from getting nuked.

I also think the US/EU/Japan and others would sanction anybody doing business with Russia just as hard as we are Russia, which would turbofuck China and/or India. As it stands, China is easing back on Russian imports because something has them spooked about further sanctions.

No guesses as to how the current situation plays out, but the fact that we are two weeks in and Russia hasn’t been able to gain any real victories in Kursk speaks more about the Russian manpower situation than any daily body counts we see.

And yeah all of those drones sent at Moscow may have been shot down, but they are still using up precious Russian AD and forcing the Russians to being more AD out of Ukraine and the border areas.

MOSCOW, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Russia said it summoned a senior U.S. diplomat on Tuesday to protest over what it called the "provocative actions" of American journalists reporting from Russia's Kursk region.

The Foreign Ministry said it had told U.S. Charge d'Affaires Stephanie Holmes that the reporters had crossed illegally into the region, where Ukrainian forces mounted an incursion two weeks ago, and that Russia intended to prosecute them.

Quote

Moscow appeared to be referring to reporting by the Washington Post and CNN from Sudzha, a Russian border town currently under Kyiv's control. In the CNN broadcast, journalists travelled with a Ukrainian military convoy from Ukraine to Sudzha, where they encountered a nearly deserted town with a few dozen elderly residents remaining.

For the Washington Post, a text reporter, a videographer and a photographer travelled to Sudzha on Saturday escorted by Ukrainian troops, and interviewed dozens of Russian civilians and Ukrainian soldiers.

Quote

The journalists' actions "clearly prove the involvement of the United States as a direct participant in the conflict", the Foreign Ministry said.

Contacted by Reuters, a Washington Post spokesperson said: "We are proud of our reporting on the Ukraine-Russia war and remain committed to covering all aspects of this important, evolving conflict."

Quote

In its statement on Tuesday, Moscow added that there was "evidence of the participation of Americans PMCs (private military companies) on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during their invasion of the territory of the Russian Federation."

well, not sure about prevailing winds, but even a low-radiation bomb in parts of Ukraine or Kursk is really close to a spread to Moscow.

That wouldn't be a huge concern (certainly not for Putin, like he fucking cares), but a low yield tactical weapon wouldn't create enough fallout to be of a concern that far away.  The danger would be in the immediate area, and serious fallout would last only a matter of days (beyond ground zero).  A decent rainfall would knock most of it down, what's left by half life cycles dissipates pretty quickly.

We tend to think of nuclear weapons release like Chernobyl, but that was entirely different, it was an open core just spewing radioactive isotopes for days on end (and really months).  This would be a completely different ball game (of course still not good).

I thought they were mostly using them to probe the defenses and see if there’s a breaking point for the air defenses near Moscow, and to check response times (which would help them determine where the AD is at or controlled from), but I’ve seen some pretty good theories about them using those attacks to force Moscow to move more and more AD away from Ukraine, in preparation for more close air support.

He's more apt to use chemical weapons than anything (I've seen the Ukrainians allege this multiple times, never seen anything verified).  Mistaking that Putin gives a shit about his own guys is a mistake though, if he did, he wouldn't have already gotten over 600k killed or seriously wounded.  The same could be said for his civilian population as well, he doesn't give a shit about anyone in some backwoods village in Kursk.  Hell, killing any of them potentially saves him $110.

Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region took three more villages backed by visual evidence.

Russkaya Konopel'ka, the village of Korenevo (not to be confused with the town Korenevo) and Krasnooktyabr'skoe are now under AFU control. With the last village it is now confirmed that Russians south of the Seym river can only withdraw crossing this river.

He points out that the high financial incentives used for recruitment have created a situation where soldiers are primarily focused on survival to enjoy the money they've earned. Unlike in Wagner, where the threat of a bullet loomed both ahead and behind, there are now almost no effective means of motivating soldiers.

1. Air Defenses in Crimea destroyed

2. Fuel deliveries to Crimea stopped

3. Water supplies limited due to blowing the dam over the Deniper

4. ?

It is almost like they are checking all the boxes for the precursor for an invasion of Crimea.

My guess is that the next step is going to be all bridges from the Kherson Oblast to Crimea and then command and control centers up and down the banks of the Deniper. Then a blocking force out of Nikopol to keep the Melitpol forces occupied and a push from Kherson proper.

Control the skies to limit movement and allow better reconnaissance. Cut supplies to make it difficult to move and limit portable power generation, cut the basic necessities for the troops to degrade in effectiveness. That leaves, cutting off all possibility of resupply and limiting the avenues for reinforcement and retreat and then disrupt operational control in the theater and day to day decisions...

If they can't transport oil or fuel across the Kerch bridge anymore, there is no point in blowing it up (by the way, this is a huge admission tactically by the Russian side). In truth, it might be more useful to force Russia to blow it up on the way out as one last humiliation.

It is always better to give the opponent a chance to pull out their troops knowing that the territory in Crimea is the real value in this war. Without fuel or ferries, most of the equipment cannot be pulled out. The troops would be a bonus, but in this day and age, large masses of men are pointless on a battlefield.

If they leave the main bridge but take out everything else, including ferries, the fleeing civilians and Russian military will jam up the Kerch bridge just fine and take it out of action.  And plenty of the civilians in Crimea are Russian military dependents as well.

Yes that is correct.  A war weary US populous and Patton's own hubris prevented that, on whole.  There were other factors, but the most notably Patton, as popular as he was with his own men, was equally disdained by the Brittish and basically forced into retirement.  That is one reason why his death was so eery.  Some believe it was a hit, I do not.  But he was not well liked and the command and control of that theatre was ready for him to go back to the states.

With Modi trying to play both sides, making him think about the innocent Ukrainian children killed by the Russian Terrorist state he continues to fund is a great strategy. We’re either going to discover Modi is just as inhumane as Putin, or he’ll suddenly oppose buying cheap resources from Russia. I realize it’s not that simple, as Modi ultimately has to act in the best interest of India and they’re competing with China, but sometimes doing the right thing ends up being in your country’s best interest
