I’ve done some work on our large Red River ammo depot (which most are decommissioned or extremely old ordnance) and knowing how those facilities are designed, I am at a loss on how the facility can keep having secondary detonations that are leapfrogging the entire facility.

If they use any form of compartmentalization approach then storage of ordnance should be contained and this wide spread multiple explosions should not really be happening.

The most obvious point here is this level of destruction is not possible due to just a shot down UAV.

Next, either this is a complete design flaw (which is unlikely) of the facility or the Russians got caught with multiple storage doors open at once. This either implies that the Ukraine UAVs hit them when they knew large transfers of munitions would be happening, the Russians violated the most basic sets of ordnance storage mantras by essentially having multiple blast doors for several ordnance bunkers open at once, or the storage plan for these cruise missiles are as such that they are trading safety and secondary blast protection for convenience of access.

This is more than likely an act of hubris by the Russians thinking them being so far into the interior nothing could reach them.

shame.gif.dbc3f2cf9fcc3799c4cbbbbcbea0f3aa.gif

Also, the fact that this is the storage for much of their cruise missile production is a huge deal. Without those limited stocks of their more modern munitions any attack on the Ukrainian interior will require using much less sophisticated armaments and there mean the launch point will have to be much closer to the front. Needless to say, that is a huge problem for Russia from both a tactical and logistical standpoint.

Russia has also been transfering loads of troops into the area in advance of a counter-offensive. I wonder if the ammo dump was over-filled in anticipation of their operations

We've seen a gazillion tanks get blown up because the soldiers left the hatch open because it was hot.  I would not be shocked to find out the ammo storage facility had the same thing happen.

I would bet that the Ukrainians know when transfers out to air bases are happening, or shipments from factories or other countries are coming in.

That was one helluva hit though, and doesn't seem like their normal UAVs.

Could it be their domestically produced large ballistic missiles?  Ukraine confirmed that they had tested them just under a month ago:

There are reports that Grad, S-300 and S-400 missiles, ballistic Iskander missiles and a small stash of North Korean missiles were stored at the ammunitions warehouse in Toropets, Tver region of Russia.

NASA FIRMS shows fires on almost the whole territory of the 107th Russian arsenal.

Video above for those without Twitter

6 miles from the explosion.
Without exaggeration, this is a very significant achievement. We’re likely looking at the loss of thousands of tons of explosive materials, shells, and rockets. In events of this magnitude, replacement can't be quick. I rarely comment on similar events, but definitely not today https://t.co/dy0M6yLHyh

Big big booms

International seismic stations have recorded up to 15 massive explosions equivalent to earthquakes of 2.0 to 3.2 magnitude, likely related to secondary explosions in a Russian Toropets ammunition depot in Tver region, hit last night by a Ukrainian drone.

It's also possible that they were not using the facility as designed - storing more kilotons in each compartment than what the isolation was rated for, storing ammo outside of the hardened areas, etc..  I assume when Russia designed their logistics, it wasn't with the idea that facilities within 50 miles of the Ukrainian border would be high risk, or significantly higher risk than storage north of Moscow.  So, they may not have as many "safe" locations for the amount of ammo/weapons they are currently moving.  Now their calculation has to change again.

And so secure they even let it be mapped!

On behalf of all Ukrainians: Thank you Yandex! “A friend sent me satellite photos of warehouses in Toropets in a personal message. With high detail. Many were lying in the open and easily distinguishable. Missiles in one place. Shells in another, etc. I ask him: "Where do you get all these photos in such high quality?" Do you know where? Yandex and Google maps. B*tch. I'm out of words on this issue. I just don't understand what's going on. Yandex maps, damn it!!!!”

Incredible photo..Miles from the still detonating Russian ammunition storage base in Tver, the war comes home.

Somebody on the X thread pointed out that there are approximately 20 airfields within the same proximity to the ammo dump that was hit.

If that is true, Russia will not only have to launch missiles closer to Ukraine, but they will have to use aircraft they moved further east, requiring it to fly farther, putting more hours on the wonderfully maintained Jets - and sucking up more jet fuel.

It may not have made major headlines, but it has certainly rattled Russian troops. The commander of the assault unit of the 110th Brigade, known by his nickname "Beliy," was arrested. The terrorist is regarded as a highly competent and successful commander, with notable participation in the battle for Avdiivka. A native "Donetsk miner", Beliy has been fighting against Ukraine since 2014. The case stems from Bely reportedly cracking down on drug dealers who were distributing narcotics to the fighters. The conflict was allegedly provoked by the "bearded dealers" [Akhmat], but despite his reputation, the high command has not come to Bely’s defense. Several prominent war correspondents now claim the unit was unjustly beheaded, leading them to scale back their own operations in protest. They're now begging Belousov to help him out.

Yes, or if that video is actually the first strike, it would presumably be close to sunset, and these are ongoing detonations that we're seeing from the initial strike.

Someone else pointed out this RT blurb back in 2018:

oropets /Tver region/, June 2. /TASS/. The arsenal of complex storage of missiles, ammunition and explosives constructed in the city of Toropets of the Tver region meets the highest international standards. This was stated on Saturday to journalists by Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Dmitry Bulgakov, who is on a working trip to the troops of the Western Military District to check the progress of construction of military infrastructure.

“Arsenal allows to hide stockpiles of missiles and ammunition from external influence and ensure their safety and fire safety. The full load of each storage of the arsenal is up to 240 tons, ”said the deputy head of the military department.

That is the same General Dmitry Bulgakov who was arrested and imprisoned in 2022 due to corruption charges...

Given that a lot (or most) of the stuff we see on those evening Russian TV shows was scripted by Margarita in some fashion and that she reports to Putin, if he's asking that openly, and that train of thought starts popping up in more and more of the shows, it maybe Putin trying to back out. Edit: or at least prepping the Russian people for some kind of cease fire that sees them giving up most/all of what they had taken going back to 2014.  Given the missile strike we just saw on the ammo dump, how long before the Kerch bridge goes offline for good?

Just in the last week, we've already seen the show hosts positing that Russia was never going to get in a nuclear war with NATO over NATO weapons, as if they are trying to reassure the people (or the West).
