Zelensky to Orban and Trump: fuck off

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/12/18/7489634/

"I insist that no leader in the world has the right to negotiate with Putin on behalf of Ukraine. We have never delegated this mandate to anyone. We are the victims. It would be unfair if everyone started saying how the country should live. The French people in France, Italians in Italy or Americans in the United States know what they want for themselves. So do Ukrainians." - President Zelensky

Russian police work superior to USA police work. It takes us a good week to nab a Luigi while the Russians already found their killer with a full confession in 24 hours. Amazing!

If the “slowly at first then all at once” theory is still to apply to the Russian economy collapse, do we need the all at once to happen in the next 3 weeks, or is it past the point of rescue by changes in American foreign policy?

it’d piss me off if the collapse happens and the new admin gets/takes credit for it but that’s still better than the new admin rescuing them with policy change.

eta: this is a post that belongs on the cr Ukraine thread probably, and I don’t like to read that one. Ignore the bulk- is the Russian economy over the precipice of the falls?

Without going CR I’ll say the average Russian is an order of magnitude tougher and more tolerant than humans.  What would drive America to collapse would be a…Tuesday in Russia.

What I’m saying is rock bottom is way lower than what it looks like to us here.  Russia will get MUCH worse before it collapses.  I don’t think we’re close to that.

Also, what does "collapse" mean?  When people are in breadlines or pushing thier cars to the gas station?  Or when Putin gets Mussolinied?

My definition is this, when the Russian population says that’s enough and does something about it.  I don’t know if their history shows popular revolutions, military/political coups, or some of each.

The Russian people are entirely insignificant and always have been, save in one respect: as a source of meat to be used by their masters.  Even in their brief moment of purportedly "popular" revolt 100+ years ago....they were already cultivating their next iteration of oligarchical masters.

All that matters is what the oligarchy does.  That has always been the case in Russia, and always will be.

Ok. Do we have an idea of their pain level?

#86816

There are a few levels of Pain levels in Russia I have looked at. Yeah, you got the poor fucks out in the Urals, Siberia who suck ass and can take a lot of shit. Then you have the "urban" pop in those areas. Yeah, they can take a lot compared to the west, but in some areas, like Siberia, they are dependent on a functioning some sort of government for basic needs, like heat. These can quick, but they are fucked either way. Gov falls, no services. Gov does not fall, well doesn't care, and never really did.

Then you have the old timers in the Urban areas. Moscow, etc. I think they can handle the breadlines since they did before. But the newer generations? I think they break quick. Grew up being told Russia is great, but now they might have to eat shit.

The oligarchs?  Not really.  And, Putin did a masterful job of owning/undermining every single one of them.  They really aren't much of a threat.  It remains to be seen how well Putin plays geopolitics, but he OWNS internal Russian politics.  He has no rivals, and no prospects for rivals or threats.

Yep, it's almost like clockwork that an official or oligarch or executive kills themselves every few months. Usually falling out of a window.

I gotta tell ya, that really makes me question Russian construction safety standards.  After the war, we probably oughta send some experts over there, to see if we can help 'em tighten those up for safety's sake.

yes we did. That is Eastern European History. Sucks for the smaller nations, but they always have had to decide to be on a side. Even the Hapsburg.

Basically if you were not French or Russian you were sucking someones dick since 1400. The Poles were able to make a few runs of it, but they did so by kicking the shit out of smaller nations.

OMG. OK, Ukes have style that is for sure.

According to the latest official estimate from Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation in Kyiv, the North Korean 11th Army Corps lost around 200 troops killed and wounded in a series of assaults targeting Ukrainian positions in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast last weekend.

At least a few of those casualties were inflicted by explosive first-person-view drones wearing Christmas ornaments. A reindeer. A Santa. An elf. A bird.

This discussion is making me very thankful that my grandfather emigrated here from what is now the Czech Republic in the early 1900s.  I have seen a picture of him in a Prussian army hat with the spike on top circa 1880s.

Russia has always been a transfer of ruling class.  What is the ruling class that is going to replace Putin?  Are they brave/united enough to pull it off?  He's thrown so many out windows and created a lack of trust it will be like Germans trying to knock off Hitler.

From what I understand. The thing to know about Russia. Moscow (and St. Petersburg) = Real Russians. All the rest of the aren't "Real Russians." They are second class (or worse). Kinda like how we treat migrant farm workers here. Or maybe like Hunger Games.

Until the middle and upper class in Moscow really feel scared or financially ruined, they wont care what's happening. Its too far away

I don't believe in the death penalty.

Find every case of torture & rape. Spend one hour explaining to him what was done to the innocent civilian. Then explain that we are going to do the same thing to him until he's almost dead. Then were will have doctors complete cure you. And then we will go on to the next case of torture and rape. rinse and repeat.

And make it public for the next tyrant to see

The Ukrainian General Staff has confirmed a strike on the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in the Rostov region last night.

The attack involved a combination of UAVs and Neptune missile systems. The refinery was the only refinery operating in Rostov region and it was used to support military activities.

With the Russian economy already on its knees, Ukraine takes out another of Putin's oil refineries, Novoshakhtisk with 173,000 barrels/day capacity, the 10th largest in Russia.Rostov region.

There was a pretty good Frontline on just this issue a while back. Russia has killed or run off any in the current generation who might oppose Putin, and they haven’t developed new leadership in the next generation because Putin of course doesn’t want any rivals. The upshot is there are only like 250-500 people in the whole country who might be able to step in, but they’re all part of the current apparatus so are only incentivized to keep it going, not change it.

Contrast this to the US where we develop the world’s talents and have thousands of people who could maintain leadership roles (even though we actually pick the absolute worst among us but that’s another discussion that’s been done to death in CR).

Anyone watch Putin's speech? Only real statement is he should have invaded Ukraine earlier

Highlights from BBC are here.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cpw2yw0nr7qt

Putin says he believes he has, saying Moscow has having "moved away from the brink of the abyss". He adds that the country was about to lose its sovereignty when he assumed power.

Putin says the Russian economy has left the UK behind, and says Russia is ready to work with Britain if they are willing to.

Away from the Abyss? More like falling into it like some Ruskie CEO going out a window.

One thing that will be interesting to look back once this is all done is the wildcard event of Covid and how it may have greatly influenced these major historical events. Putin was planning this invasion for quite a while but even dictators are subservient to worldwide health epidemics. Whatever timetable he had in mind the pandemic had to be a big hindrance. Plus the disruption to American lives contributed directly to public sentiment souring on Trump and ultimately his bid for reelection. If Covid didn't hit then Trump may have pulled off the reelection and been in the driver's seat whenever Putin finally decided to pull the trigger. The whole sequence of events could have played out quite drastically different. So many what ifs but the timing of a single event may have had longterm consequences similar to maybe when the Divine Winds saved Japan from the Mongol invasions in the 13th century.

You know, if you say, "No CR," it doesn't mean your post isn't "CR."  "Disastrous pullout" reflects a pretty clear political perspective.

However, to answer your question, No, I don't.

Yeah, but I was looking at the thread on the guy who killed Brian Thompson, and thought that the “CR standards” have been widened by a bunch.

On my post above, I note a couple of documented facts, and ask if they are a factor. Is that CR-ing a DT thread?

Nevermind. It’s not worth it. I deleted my post.

Stating that the pullout of Afghanistan was "disastrous" is an opinion, not a fact.  I won't go into why because it would require CR discussion.

It doesn’t have to go there - the fact is that historically, pullouts usually don’t go very well, whether it be Vietnam (for us or the French), Afghanistan for the Russians (or Brits or us), various conflicts in Africa (US, Brits, French, the Belgians, although the French seemed to have done it the best in Africa), or some places in South America, or Susan Hofstetter in Galveston in 1994 when her husband came home from work early. Had I studied French military history in Africa, I might have affected a better withdrawal in that last incident, and not left such a lasting memory on her husband, her kids, or the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department.
