Something odd happening in St. Pete's airport. Flights are diverting from all over Russia. And not to local airports, heading SE towards Moscow. Shit is going way around on the way to Kaliningrad.

Russian Airport In St. Petersburg Temporarily Suspends All Flights

An unconfirmed report said an unidentified object had been spotted in the sky and that fighter jets had been dispatched to investigate.

Russia's Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg temporarily suspended all flights on February 28, the city government said. It did not provide a reason. An unconfirmed media report from online Russian news outlet Baza said an unidentified object had been spotted in the sky and that fighter jets had been dispatched to investigate. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. Data from the Flight Radar website showed a number of domestic flights headed for St. Petersburg turning back.

Alien drones man, alien drones.

‼️"We could have received more weapons, but we had to pay for these expensive planes. Some companies are lobbying for such decisions, but I could not speak about it out loud, I did not want to incite a scandal. Therefore, when talking about corruption, one should ask — if there were $177 billion, and we received half, then where is the rest?"

Lex is giving strong "just give the bully what he wants" energy. President Zelensky sitting down in a room with Trump and Putin to "compromise" does not end well for Ukraine, as fridman so vapidly wishes and "dreams".

It's like lex is trying to protect a future interview with putin by not saying anything to offend that strong man authoritarian

New year, same war.

Interesting data I read this morning on polling and YoY changes:

Quote

Almost three years into Putin's full attempted invasion, Ukrainians are tired. Russians are too, but polling just last week suggests around 38% of Ukrainians are now open to Putin keeping some of Ukraine's land to end the war, up from just 8% in 2022.

Meanwhile, 51% of Ukrainians say Ukraine shouldn't give up its land under any circumstances — that's down from 85% in 2022. Support for Zelensky is down, too.

But in parallel, a record 73% of Ukrainians now support their country re-developing nuclear weapons, which they surrendered 30 years ago in return for US-UK-French-Russian security guarantees. We're seeing that rekindled interest in nukes in multiple places, by the way, as rattled capitals everywhere revisit their own security assumptions.

Not specifically Ukraine but drone warfare generally:

HellHives deliver ready-to-go drone squadrons. To prove that they can do this easily at low cost, the team have carried out demonstrations using actual cardboard boxes. More sophisticated HellHives are weatherproof with self-opening lids and can be positioned well ahead of use. They can be activated remotely with no need for human presence

they also developed a cheap hook to use for hanging the drone from anything handy:

This is a BFD and not in a good way.  Laura Cooper is for sure not everyone’s cup of tea but she is a badass and one of the most capable and realistic Russia hawks out there.  A big loss for us and for Ukraine.  The Pentagon is going to have a huge knowledge and credibility gap in the Russia space, she was the big gun in an agency that has been zeroed in on the sandbox and Pacific.

New in @politico: Laura Cooper has departed her Pentagon post as DASD for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia. After nearly three years, she's been integral to getting vast supplies of military assistance delivered to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian technological advances in drone warfare reached another milestone. Only days after downing at least 2 Russian helicopters, Ukrainian USVs launched UAVs against Russian coastal air defense systems. During this operation two Pantsir-S1 and one 9K33 Osa was struck.

The first operation of that kind was reported one month ago, but this strike shows the capabilities and efficiencies of Ukrainian drone warfare, where valuable and expensive air defense assets worth $50 million of the Russian army get eliminated with an invest, which make up only a fraction of it. It also further exposes Russian defenses along the Black Sea coast

That's impressive:

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, "says Ukrainian unmanned system operators successfully targeted over 54,000 russian assets during the month. Importantly, 49% of targets, or approximately 26,500, were taken down by kamikaze drones.He…

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, "says Ukrainian unmanned system operators successfully targeted over 54,000 russian assets during the month. Importantly, 49% of targets, or approximately 26,500, were taken down by kamikaze drones.

He specifically praised the Birds of the Magyar (aka Kryla Madiara) unit led by Major Robert Brovdy, which evolved from a drone operators company into the 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Aerial Systems within a year.

Among the UAV units, remarkably high effectiveness was demonstrated by:

the unmanned systems detachment of the 46th airmobile brigade;
the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade;
the 28th Mechanized Brigade;
the 35th Marine Brigade;
the 3rd Assault Brigade."

If it was a war crime, a lot of Russian APC drivers should be hauled up in front of the The Hague for running over...*checks notes* Russian soldiers.

And as somebody who ran a lot of other players over in Battlefield 1942 with my good ole Jeep (I killed more people with Jeeps than with any other weapon), that was an interesting/satisfying video.
