Firstly, Russia has not exhausted its full military potential. While Russia's military performance has been surprisingly poor, they haven't yet resorted to full mobilization of their resources or transitioned to a complete war economy.

We are three years in, Russia is using North Koreans who are ineffectual, and the Norks are being killed by the Russians and their officers when they are wounded, Russians are riding bicycles and golf carts into assaults, they still haven’t kicked the Ukrainians out of Kursk, and the Ukrainians are getting better and better at taking out irreplaceable Russian energy infrastructure deeper and deeper inside of Russia proper.. Russia is relying on North Korea for a lot of ammo, and they and Iran just lost their biggest ally in the Middle East, that they couldn’t militarily protect.

If Putin could fully mobilize, he would have by now.  The raiding of a few night clubs and the drunk tanks in Moscow and St. Pete’s ain’t going to do it,

5 hours ago, Viper said:

This means they still have the capacity to escalate the conflict significantly. Moreover, external factors, such as increased Chinese support, could further bolster Russia's capabilities. While China currently provides some assistance, they haven't fully committed their resources, leaving room for a potential shift in the balance of power.

China has been extremely cautious about not running into Western sanctions. What Russia is getting is all they will get.  It’s why North Korea and Iran are really the only two countries supplying weapons in large quantities.

5 hours ago, Viper said:

Secondly, the looming threat of nuclear weapons remains a critical factor. Zeihan argues that if Russia manages to advance and reach the borders of NATO countries, they might resort to nuclear threats as a bargaining chip. He paints a scenario where Russia could threaten to launch nuclear strikes on European capitals,

Zeihan has not been watching Russian state TV where threatening to nuke European capitols is a weekly event.  Actual use of nukes will mean China gets involved in a narrative way, as they have told Putin “no”.

5 hours ago, Viper said:

Thirdly, Russia's declining demographic and geopolitical situation makes it potentially more dangerous.

This is how you know it’s a Zeihan video (not saying he’s right or wrong),

5 hours ago, Viper said:

As a declining power with a shrinking population, Russia might feel it has less to lose and therefore be more willing to take drastic measures. Zeihan suggests that Russia's desperation could lead them to employ unconventional tactics or weapons, including cyber warfare, chemical weapons, or other destabilizing actions.

Russia has already tried to influence elections in other nations, their spies have killed Russians in European countries, lots of their spies have been caught in said countries, they have deliberately tried to cut communications in the Baltic multiple times, they’ve been doing the cyber warfare thing long before 2022, they’ve already committed enough war crimes that thousands of their soldiers should hang, they won’t use chemical weapons (again, it gets China involved against them).

5 hours ago, Viper said:

While Russia's military performance has been underwhelming, it is crucial to recognize their remaining potential and the possibility of escalation. The video serves as a reminder of the complex geopolitical factors at play and the importance of continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

If Putin truly had the resources that he could call upon to make serious gains, he would have done so by now. Trading 100,000 Russians for a small village and a few kilometers on a map over 6 months might have sustainable in 1944, but it’s not now.

In Ryazan, an oil refinery has been hit by Ukrainian drones. Fires are seen from far away.

It seems like Ukrainian drones have carried out a very significant strike on the oil refinery in Ryazan. Huge columns of fire are observed.

Ukraine map updates: Russian forces have taken control of Vremivka and thus the final road out of Velyka Novosilka. The settlement is now effectively cut off and Russia has begun assaulting from the west. Some Ukrainian forces remain in the town.

Great to see you guys again!!!  Going days without new info has been an unpleasant withdrawal.

I’m liking the more frequent strikes on the refineries, air bases, oil depots, and weapons plants. The cumulative impact of these random strikes over the years has to be getting to the point that repairs/replacement of the facilities, along with sanctions on materials, are making those repairs less frequent and less effective.

Still, too little, too late. Maybe.

No CR, but anything said by anybody 3 years ago has no bearing on what happens tomorrow.

I’m choosing to read the tea leaves I like.

Rubio was only a mouthpiece, but I really liked the way he delivered the US intelligence briefings leading up to the invasion. I’m betting he has as good an understanding on Ukraine and Russia as anybody, and his understanding has influence within the new administration.

A few things that have transpired since Trump 1.0. Russia went from the 2nd Army of the world with a thumb on the scale to a sawed off thug with a bunch of natural resources, and nukes. And the Tech companies went from the scourge of society to the choice seats at the inauguration of Trump 2.0.  Trump has the company of the really smart guys, and they may be a bunch of dickheads, but they are really smart. They also make, and have, a lot of money, which drives the economy.

That train keeps moving down the tracks until a bigger shooting war derails it.

We’ve seen more pictures of more nations with war ships than any time in my life. There’s a lot of shit bubbling up in every corner of the globe.  A fucking Russian spy ship cruising in the English Channel, with a sneak and peak from a UK nuclear submarine?

The EU stated they would pay the US for the US weapons Ukraine needs. That’s a big win-win.

The US doesn’t need “Drill, baby drill”, but Europe certainly does. That works too. Reaching out to the Saudi’s is out of the Reagan playbook. All gas, Fuck them brakes.

Most people acknowledge that Trump 1.0 was right; Europe needs to be able to take care of themselves. Don’t pull the chair out from under them. Deposit their checks and give them the “Made in America” things they want.

Coupling a ramped up defense industry and a boost to the O&G sector with an already strong economy would appear to be a no brainer.

Right now the world is waiting to see what the US (Trump 2.0) does.

Crawling back to our little sand box doesn’t look like the right choice.

Here’s to hoping he chooses wisely.

😂🤡 "The conflict will not be resolved in 100 days if the US threatens sanctions," - Russian Foreign Ministry

The 82nd Brigade repelled a Russian mech. attack in the Kursk region. A precise hit on the third vehicle split the convoy, forcing the infantry from the damaged BMP to dismount in a vulnerable position, where they came under fire. The tank and first BMP continued forward but were later destroyed.

‼️ Gazprom complained about the lack of money and demanded to raise gas prices for Russians and gas transportation tariffs for independent producers three times. 👀 The tariff, frozen since 2015, is 62.5 rubles, and the company's costs are 109 rubles. Gazprom needs a price of 170 rubles.

Bluesky has curated lists and feeds that Twitter doesn't. So one of the good things about that is you can just add an existing list, and click on that and it'll only show you news related to that topic (i.e. Ukraine war, Texas Longhorns, etc.) and when you're done reading through that feed, you can click back to your Following or Discover (the main) threads.

Of course, time periods may not line up with the entirety of the war (I did not check) and there certainly can be an argument Europe should bear a larger portion but do note that the UK not an EU country contributed the most by GDP of any area or country during this time and combined with the rest of Europe the number is higher.

I think it's an extreme mistake for the US to stop supporting Ukraine financially as the US has a strategic interest in both a secure Europe and a weakened Russia, but if the position is set in stone - no more aid from the US - then Europe is doing the next best strategic move by offering to pay.

Say what you will about Trump and personally you know what I think, he often times wins without taking the winning course. Europe will pay more, the US will pay less, it will be claimed a victory and our relationships with NATO and our allies will be weakened. But for Ukraine, what matters is the arms and money continues to flow.

I'm glad Europe has taken on the role of being an adult here. kudos to them.

Oh, here's the key to that: the west is bleeding Russia dry NOT by converting to a full wartime economy but instead....functionally...with change we found between the couch cushions.  Seriously, even the big % GDP contributors aren't exactly totally re-tooling their economy to fight the war.

"Russia, I can beat your ass with old shit I have in my garden shed" is a powerful message.  And not just to Russia.

Note the sizable support based on GDP from Denmark and the Netherlands when you break out the EU nations.

Ultimately, I believe the narrative that Europe isn't carrying its weight is just blatantly false.  But hey, that's a "useful not true" statement.  That's what we do these days.

I think it's an extreme mistake for the US to stop supporting Ukraine financially as the US has a strategic interest in both a secure Europe and a weakened Russia, but if the position is set in stone - no more aid from the US - then Europe is doing the next best strategic move by offering to pay.

It is also going to vary quite a bit based upon how you count the value of aid. For instance, if the US sends 30 modern MBT tanks and Poland sends 30 modern MBT tanks, Ukraine got 30 tanks each, but the US donation will appear 5x bigger in dollar amount. And then there is the whole thing where the vast majority of "aid" approved by Congress is really aid to US manufacturers, not really money or items going to Ukraine. And, to be clear, I'm not critical of this approach at all. I'm just pointing out the accounting difficulties that arise as a result.

Previous posters are right in the sense that changing administrations does give us an opportunity to explore new, more aggressive approaches. There were certainly elements of the prior administration that were overly cautious (in my view) in their approach to Russia. I don't think the current administration is so constrained and if it believes taking a hardline against Russia is in its personal best interests, it will do so. And I think that is something that could happen. But, we shouldn't delude ourselves into believing that prior actions suggest that is what this administration will do. If we take a more aggressive stance, it'll take a shift of both US policy and a shift of this administrations prior views. I'm hopeful that someone makes the right argument to make that change to happen.

There is more that can be done. Some of it is simple, might seem trivial, but would impact the countries openly flaunting the sanctions, Gulf States, China, India primarily.

If your airlines are flying over Russia, thus paying them over flight fees, you cannot land in my country. Done. Fly around like everyone else. This does not stop flights to and from Russia. It just means the Air India Cargo, (insert chinese airline), Emriates for example cannot take off from the US or Home and transit over Russia.

If they continue, hit them with sanctions.

Protests in Slovakia against Fico cozying up with Putin.

🇸🇰🇸🇰🇸🇰

Quote

Tens of thousands protest in Slovakia over pro-Russia policies of populist leader Fico

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Tens of thousands of people in Slovakia gathered at squares and street across the country on Friday to voice their opposition to the pro-Russia policies of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The latest wave of anti-government rallies was fueled by Fico’s recent trip to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a rare visit to the Kremlin by a European Union leader since Moscow’s all-out invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, 2022.

Fico’s recent remarks that that it was a possibility to change Slovakia’s foreign policy orientation and leave the European Union and NATO were among other recent steps by the prime minister that fueled the anger of protesters.

“Slovakia is not Russia, Slovakia is Europe” and “We have enough of Fico” and “Resign,” protesters chanted in Bratislava.

Friday’s rallies took place in 28 locations, more than double compared to two weeks ago amid heightened tensions after Fico accused organizers and the opposition earlier this week of being in contact with an unspecified group of foreigners who he says are working toward engineering a coup in Slovakia.

Fico linked his accusations to a secret report by the country’s spy service, known as SIS, that he presented in parliament on Tuesday. The details weren’t known, but Fico publicly said that the opposition plans to occupy government buildings, block roads, organize a nationwide strike and provoke clashes with police forces as parts of the alleged plan to overthrow his government.

Slovak leaders said that the situation was serious, but the opposition dismissed the report and accused SIS of being misused for political purposes.

SIS is led by the son of Fico’s close party ally.

The organizers of the most of the rallies from the Peace for Ukraine organization dismissed Fico’s claims and said that he is trying to frighten the Slovak population.

All the numerous public anti-government protests since Fico’s Cabinet was sworn in on Oct. 25, 2023, have been peaceful.

Organizers said their protest in Bratislava attended 60,000 people and rallies will continue on Feb 7.

Fico’s views on Russia have sharply differed from the European mainstream.

He returned to power last year after his leftist party Smer (Direction) won a parliamentary election on a pro-Russia and anti-American platform. Since then, he has ended Slovakia’s military aid for Ukraine, lashed out at EU sanctions on Russia and vowed to block Ukraine from joining NATO.

Fico is a polarizing figure in Slovakia, and he survived an assassination attempt in May 2024.

German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz stated that Ukraine must win and reclaim all its territory. He promised to continue supporting Ukraine and emphasized that Ukraine must “win the war” and must be free to choose its political and military alliances.

Ukraine can provide coal to fuel Transnistria’s thermal power plant in exchange for electricity for Ukraine and Moldova – President Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy shared this in a press conference following the meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Kyiv today.

The dissatisfaction with Fico runs deeper than just Russia.  He was already forced out once due to protests in 2018, but came back with a vengeance. He will be much more pugnacious this time. He does have a tricky spot in that coalition MPs are unhappy.

I am not confident that there is enough momentum to maintain the protests.  The 2018 ones went on for weeks and were much less politicized than these.
