Embeds marginally interfere with page loading on my devices but are far more preferable to me than having to decide whether or not to click a link and load a new page or app just to see a picture or video. Then, with screenshots, you can't watch a video, read comments, or follow a link. So, if Bluesky is the only thing that embeds here, then I'd much prefer that or at least a combination of Thread links (and text) like Miller contributes, mixed with others posting embeds (the current setup). Just my opinion.

Believe a couple of those are in the far east and out of range for anything other than deep spec ops, so this is a really good %. Granted, I think that’s just hits, not reflective of operational capacity, but it’s nice to see all the same.

Yeah, I would be extremely cautious about correlating pictures of fireballs to damages to the refinery itself.

Sending a ship to the bottom of the sea is much easier to conform than discreet damages to an intricate maze of hundreds of pipelines and manifolds, process units, storage vessels, heaters &coolers,  etc.

First, damn near everything in an oil refinery is flammable, and will make big fireballs.

From the pictures and video’s taken at night it is impossible to tell what is burning. Big difference between process towers rupturing and burning as compared to a storage tank or pipeline.

A world class refinery may have 30-50 different process units located across a 2-4 square mile area. Hitting the biggest one may take out the majority of the processing capacity, while hitting a smaller one may have a negligible effect. Without a very clear understanding of what was hit and is burning, it is extremely difficult to tell from a picture.

Full disclosure, I am a gas processing/natural gas liquids SME, not a refining guy. If one had a detailed plot plan overlaid with the explosions and fires, it would be easier to tell what was damaged. I don’t think I have seen any posting or discussion with that level of detail. I don’t doubt that information exists, but it isn’t in the public domain.

However, like body blows to a boxer, the cumulative effects of multiple attacks and explosions and fires decreases the overall capacity and efficiency of the facility.

Chicks dig the long ball everybody likes explosions and fireballs.

Plus, putting aside the fact that they can't just call up Western suppliers of the various fancier parts they need to keep those refineries running, they have to keep shuffling their precious air defenses around (and if they move them around, they might be spotted by Ukrainian intelligence/satellites).

And hell, given how many refineries have been lit up this month, what exactly air defense doing?

Why mysteriously?  Lob a shell over their deck and tell them to take it to the closest NATO port.

I've read the Nordic navies (especially Sweden) are spec'd out to patrol/control the Baltic.  Run a combo of man and zone coverage on these Russian and Chinese shitbox cargo ships.

if some Swedish fire control officer made an oopsie - and slammed a shell into the side of the Russian vessel that made it explode, I would certainly expect a seemingly sincere apology from a Swedish diplomat midway into eating his sandwich be mumbled to the Russian Ambassador - and that a recommendation of a stern warning be placed in that officer’s record.

I really hate when a URL on the screen doesn't match the actual URL. In this case what looks like a twitter URL is actually a URL that opens on surlyx.com.  That's terrible and there is no good that will from that.

Two possible options would be to embedding the image from surlyx.com or make the link say surlyx.com.

Right now you have to copy that URL off the post and paste it into a browser window; that greatly diminishes that value of this thread.

January 13, 2025
Georgia: Authorities using draconian new laws to crack down on dissent

Responding to the Georgian authorities’ use of repressive new legislation to crack down on protesters in Georgia, Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said:

“The Georgian authorities’ use of newly enacted, draconian legislation to suppress peaceful dissent marks a disturbing escalation in their crackdown on human rights. The laws, hurriedly passed in December 2024, effectively criminalize even symbolic acts of protest, such as placing stickers on public property. These measures are being deliberately wielded to target peaceful protestors and stifle dissenting voices, including journalists, human rights defenders, and political activists.”

The Georgian authorities’ use of newly enacted, draconian legislation to suppress peaceful dissent marks a disturbing escalation in their crackdown on human rights
Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

“The Georgian authorities must urgently release all those detained for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and conduct prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into all allegations of unlawful and disproportionate use of force by police.”

Background

Between 11 and 12 January, more than 20 people — including activists, media workers, and members of the political opposition — were arrested in Tbilisi and Batumi during protests held in solidarity with previously detained pro-European demonstrators.

Some, including activists Tsiala Katamidze and Mate Tsentradze, were detained in Batumi under a newly enacted law that prohibits the placing of protest stickers on public buildings. Mzia Amaghlobeli, founder of the media companies Batumelebi and Netgazeti, was arrested twice on 12 January. Initially detained for the administrative “offence” of posting a protest sticker, she was later re-arrested as a criminal suspect, with the charges against her yet to be disclosed. Human rights defender Gia Jvarsheishvili, who previously reported being tortured during detention in December, was also re-arrested on 11 January and later hospitalized.

Human rights defenders reported delays in accessing detainees, amid allegations that several of them had been subjected to beatings, ill-treatment, and verbal abuse by police.

New legislation that came into effect on 30 December imposed further arbitrary restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, introducing hefty fines for putting up protest slogans or posters, and granting police the power to detain individuals “preventatively” on suspicion of planning to violate the rules governing public assembly or other laws, for up to 48 hours.

Bulgarian ship.

Swedish authorities on Monday boarded a Bulgarian-owned ship seized in connection with the latest breach of underwater fiber-optic cables running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea to begin an investigation into the matter.

Crewed by Bulgarians and Burmese. Both nations known for their maritime knowledge and complete morals and ethics.

The Bulgarian vessel on Sunday "was chased by the Swedish coast guard with instructions for the ship to go into their territorial waters and it is now on anchor where an investigation ... is ongoing," Alexander Kalchev, CEO of Navigation Maritime Bulgare (Navibulgar), owner of the Vezhen, told AFP.

He denied involvement in any sabotage. "I am convinced that we cannot say ... that this was a malicious act," he added.

The Malta-flagged vessel carrying fertilizer from Ust-Luga in Russia and headed for South America was sailing in "extremely bad weather" on Saturday based on the information given to him by the crew, Kalchev said.

An inspection on Sunday found that "one of the ship's anchors was damaged and the anchor had dropped into the sea, which means that it was possible that it had dragged along the sea floor," he said, adding the anchor was then pulled up.

Hmmm.. gonna disagree here. I say go the US WOD style and use some sort of goofy international water asset forfeiture laws to take all their cargo, fuel and "arrest" the crew. Redistribute the goods, fuel and crew. Send the ship on its way with massive fine post confirmation of repairs that caused the issue. If repairs can be paid for, auction that fucking boat off to the highest bidder.

If the laws don't exist, make them up in the name of freedom and protecting the children.

Profit!

What you call “rough patches” I call “premium entertainment.” Watching MFCDG lurch back from the lady’s room with toilet paper streaming from the back of her pantyhose…and her stealing my steak knife “for protection” was a glimpse into a world that was fun to watch… but only because I was on the periphery of it.

The only moron here is the guy posting quote from other threads, and then trying to draw equivalencies to an on-topic post with a video from a guy that called this war eleven years before it happened. Don't like Zeihan, or disagree with his analysis? Great, use your words to explain why. Otherwise shut the fuck up, if I need advice on sucking dicks, or digging ditches, I'll remember to ask you.

I went through about a 2-year bout of post-divorce insanity and dated a cam girl who liked knives, voodoo, and heart-shaped sunglasses. I didn't know about the cam stuff until we'd been dating for a few months. I embraced the insanity and had a running thread for a while on the old site. SquishMitten got the acronym right.
