I’ve never supported him in my life. I hate the man.

Ok well if I misinterpreted that then I apologize.

But my remaining points stand. The post-WWII world order that tfg appears dead set on dismantling has been great for America, and tfg is not capable and never has been, of doing anything constructive on this or any other front. He is a toxic agent of chaos and destruction. He can produce nothing but the same.

Is this too political for this thread, or is it allowed? Cause it's beautiful.

🪧💢 Pro-Ukraine protesters confronted J.D. Vance during his Vermont vacation, accusing him of betraying Ukraine. They called him a “traitor” and shouted, “Go ski in Russia,” criticising his stance on US support for Ukraine.

My longtime very good friend, a conservative & Falklands War veteran who despises the Labour Party and Prime Minister Starmer says he posted this on a FB discussion today:

I normally do not have a good word for our current Prime Minister, but today I was proud to be British, and for our Prime Minister to be the first to stand up and give Zelensky and Ukraine the support it needs after his mauling in the USA.
Trump and Vance should note, we did not ask for anything for ourselves.
We did not try to lever our support to a deal.
A country being invaded needs friends, not business partners.
Ukrainians will not forget this, in the same way as Greeks do not forget the support we gave them in WWII
I hate to say this, but well done Keir Starmer

Contrarian view:

Trump did two things of note this past week, wrt Ukraine:

1. He had America vote against a UN resolution (correctly) charging Russia with starting the war. (Note- Russian ally China, also offering to broker a peace, abstained, instead of voting against. Wonder why?).
2. In the Oval Office televised discussion before the breakdown, he affirmed that U.S. weapon shipments, approved last year, would continue.

Which of these actions is most significant, most telling?

Zelensky wants guarantees of security. Trump has proposed a minerals deal for ores that are underneath the current battle lines, where commerce only happens in the advantage of US and Ukraine, if they are not under Russian control.

I get that Zelensky wants his whole country back. He should. The truth is- no one has ever offered a plan or resources to accomplish that.

Zelensky is not Churchill; he is Thieu, and he is balking at a deal that Thieu would have given his left nut for. He better hope that Budanov doesn’t start looking at him like Diem.

Maybe Europe will offer a better deal. Maybe they will offer munitions and troops.

Trump will undoubtedly use tariffs and whatever else against Europe to punish them but I think all that will do besides deepen a recession is make Europe distance from the US even more. Honestly that’s probably a good thing.

Yeah, about tariffs and the next six weeks:

Quote

President Trump on Thursday said on social media that 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which had been delayed for a month while the sides negotiated, will now roll out next week as scheduled. He also this week announced an additional 10% tariff on imports from China, on top of those already in place, set to kick in next week, while 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports are lined up for March 12. Sweeping reciprocal tariffs and levies on automobile imports may be deployed as soon as early April, while Mr. Trump has threatened to hit imports from the European Union with 25% duties.

Me thinks that those tariffs will not last long, and talking about trying to hurt Europe for supporting Ukraine, well Europe is our biggest trading partner. We need their markets.  We rely on imports from Canada and Mexico, and we also export a lot to both.  It is a fucked up situation we find ourselves in economically, no doubt, but we can’t hammer Europe like that, and I suspect we won’t last long just with Canada and Mexico.

And we run the real risk of billions of Euros and pounds being diverted from American defense companies to European companies.

I said earlier that nature abhors a vacuum, and I think we and Europe are going our own ways and they will fill that vacuum, at least over Ukraine. Maybe even what Immamac said about about Europe not giving a fuck what we do - we need their markets arguably more than they need ours (especially if we fuck round with Mexico and Canada).  And if you’re a European, why wouldn’t you decide now is a good time to go your own way? You don’t get many chances to usurp the sole superpower on the global stage, while helping to ensure that the number two military in Russia is wrecked.

You said American voted correctly against the resolution. You then followed it up with drivel suggesting that Zelensky should have been grateful for the great deal Trump was offering.  Either you have no idea what you wrote or you are a disingenuous twat.

Notice your reply and his post put 'correctly' in different places.

Your 'correctly' referred to the vote. His (correctly) refers to the charge.

The rest was ramble, so I don't know what the point was.

I read it as a paused aside as if the parentheses were commas. If the intent were to communicate that resolution itself was correct, then the use of the parathenetical was odd and unnecessary. But I do see what you're saying.

English is now the official language of the United States, so you guys had better brush up on your grammar, spelling, and composition skills. In not doing so, you disrespect our glorious national tongue and risk being reported and deported.

In other news, Mike Johnson said this morning that Zelenskyy should step down if he doesn't bow to the threats and extortion coming from the American regime. At the same time, France and the UK announced they're working hand-in-hand with their ally, Ukraine, on crafting a ceasefire proposal.

Interesting things are happening in Toretsk.

According to data from Deep State, the amount of new land Russia occupies has been dropping. Of course, the situation is difficult, but that Ukraine has been able to slow the advance points to issues within the Russian armed forces.

This is why many in the Ukrainian army say that a ceasefire would play into Russian hands. It would allow Russia to regroup. Many of the Ukrainians at the front now say that while it is a difficult war, they see an opportunity in Russia’s weakening and want to seize it.

hmmm

Polish PM Donald Tusk, speaking before his flight to London for the European Ukraine summit: “500 million Europeans are asking 300 million Americans to defend them against 140 million Russians. [...] Europe today lacks the belief that we are truly a global force.”
🇺🇸🇪🇺 US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told his European counterparts that they should expect a reduction in the US military presence in Europe, — WP ❗️European diplomats were told that 20,000 US troops sent by the Biden administration will be withdrawn from Europe.

Exactly. Ukraine has an edge right now. Russia cannot produce equipment nearly fast enough, and Russia’s economy cannot stop producing military equipment without a massive recession. Russia will use a ceasefire to manufacture weapons and vehicles and break the ceasefire as soon as its most advantageous. Ukraine would try to use the ceasefire to stockpile weapons and build fortifications along the current lines. Ukraine won’t violate the ceasefire, so a ceasefire without security guarantees is purely advantageous to Russia.

Couldn't be any more succinct:

Is using the Russian army as a threat to Ukraine the best way to get a low price on Ukrainian minerals? Or is it best to support genocide by Russia and buy the minerals from the new overlords? This University of Chicago economist has thoughts.

Nice.  But it's very likely that all purchases going forward should be for European/South Korean hardware.  It's possible TFG is going to refuse to sell parts for this and other American equipment in the near future and preclude our "allies" from doing the same.

Europe has a GDP roughly equivalent to the US. Add in Mexico & Canada. Maybe 4T more. China has been making investments in Africa. India?

And, we're trying to bully them with tariffs? This isn't going to go how we want it t0.

The US could easily be a second world country in 5 years.

And this time, we won't have friendly neighbors to the north and south

I remember discussing this during the last Trump administration. The U.S. doesn't have the economic power to engage China on it's own. The U.S. economy plus the economies of our western allies provides the strength to engage China.

Without our allies we are another JAG. Granted, Trump might have us join the BRICS next week so we might have a new set of allies.
