Well now that international orders are kaput, we will need the domestic orders to pour in to keep one of the few in-house manufacturing sectors going.

so maybe the right thing to do all along is now becoming the politically expedient thing as well?

Fair to assume a total cost increase for all of these platforms and systems due to tariffs on incoming raw mats and components?

I have mixed feelings on this, obviously it’s super shitty and ahistorical to not recognize that we fought the Japanese and the war didn’t end in May. On the other hand marking May 8 (not May 9)) and saying we were the most important will make the Russian big fucking mad. Especially if we rename it overall Victory Day.

Meh.  Minor thing to get wrapped around the axle about.  I think those who actually took notice over the years really recognized V-E Day and V-J day separately anyhow.  It's just that he's really an idiot all around who doesn't really give a flying fuck about either, so it's really just his normal uninformed posturing.  Not saying "don't say fuck that guy,"  but this is just a garden variety, sun-rises, sun sets "fuck that guy."  Not like a hollow out the government, undermine the judiciary, throw yourself a Nork style birthday parade "FUCK THAT GUY!"

*Also, let's not forget that the USSR globbed onto V-J day, not wanting to get left out of the spoils, declaring war on Japan on August 9, 1945.

If I understand tariffs right, the end user is the one who pays the cost.  If the Federal Govrnment is the end user, all they’re doing is paying themselves back.  Tax the import then pay extra for the result.

Yeah foreign buyers it’s different as they will see a higher cost.  But I dunno, our shit’s so good it may not matter.  If you don’t like the price of an F35, go make you OWN stealth fighter.

Yeah I hadn’t thought about the end user being the tariff collector in this instance, so it’s moving money from left pocket to right pocket.  Assuming no inefficiencies in doing so. Not sure how likely that is between the MIC and the federal gvt/DOD.

Moving money from one pocket to the other is, by definition, an inefficiency.

Not exactly. Generally, government contracts are usually on a year quote basis for typical day to say items. So if Raytheon quote $100 per drone, they can only charge that amount to the government not matter what their costs are (including tariff increases).

Most likely, what the government would do is give a tariff exception to that particular set if imports that are used on the drone. Effectively, our defense industry would be exempt from any tariff increases.

Maybe an older sea baby that was modified but hopefully it was the new Katran with its SAMs and torpedoes. This is important given the new Russian tactic of having shaheds gather in the Black Sea before all simultaneously attacking odessa

Probably because they thought we would eventually cover the entire operation.  Now that we are obviously back to pre-WWI and pre-WWII isolationism regarding Europe, at best, they know what that means.

So again, is it wrong to all the sudden be optimistic?  Next thing to watch is if we actually do give/sell them some more kickass American weapons.  The hawk Republicans need to talk up the fact selling weapons creates high-end, technical, American manufacturing jobs.  There is a segment of American blue collars who would buy into that.  Enough people to flip Ukrainian support to “yes.”

Getting more engaged in Ukraine against Russia has a shit ton of upside for the US economically and otherwise. It also helps to weaken Chinese influence by perception if nothing else. Which... isn't that a positive for the current administration?

If the powers that be can't get their voting block behind combat efforts against the Russians they've got way, way bigger issues. Let me rephrase, getting US Republican voters behind military spending against Russia is/was something a democratic presidents could/did accomplish... it would be historically odd if the current administration couldn't.

Update:

- This volunteering experience has really been a good one. People are really grateful and the volunteer teams have been about 60-70% locals with the remainder foreigners like me. It is really inspiring to see how the Ukranians are like "Fuck it and fuck you, Putin. We rebuild." Being a little part of that feels really fucking good, given my family history fleeing Ruzzn oppression, my feelings on this war and what i know about it through this thread, and, now, actually meeting the people.

- I am so sick of air alerts every night. Can't imagine what it'd be like in the Kharkiv direction for example. Sounds like a tornado siren. Usually they just throw some Shaheds at us, which is no big deal, but a couple nights ago and tonight it was ballistic missiles like Iskander/S300, which can make it through the Patriots. Regardless, those hoes always attack at night which ducks up my sleep schedule because i start work at 8 or 9. Fuck you, Putin. I imagine my 7 and 5 year old living through this and how to explain it to them so the understand the gravity of it and take cover, but it doesn't taint their childhood.

Russia launched an overnight drone strike on Kyiv that left at least 11 people injured, including two children, and set several residential buildings on fire, Ukrainian officials said.

Falling debris from destroyed drones sparked several blazes in the Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts of the capital, according to Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration.

Emergency services said dozens of firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fires raging in Kyiv overnight, as well as tackling a smaller blaze in Kyiv’s central Shevchenkivskyi district.

In an interview on Sunday, Mr Trump signalled a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine was some way off, and said he had come close to walking away from the negotiating table in the past.

“I do believe we’re closer with one party, and maybe not as close with the other. But we’ll have to see. I’d like to not say which one we’re closer to,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press.

Mr Trump declined to set a deadline on when a truce would have to be negotiated. Instead, he said he would tell both countries, “keep being stupid and keep fighting” if they proved intractable. “Sometimes I get close to it, and then positive things happen,” he added.

In an interview on Sunday, Vladimir Putin said he “hopes” he would not have to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine as he took a journalist on a tour of his private Kremlin apartment.

The Russian president said: “There has been no need to use those [nuclear] weapons... and I hope they will not be required,” in response to a question about Ukrainian strikes.

Finally, it turns out that the attacks of the night of 3-4 May caused some damage in my neighborhood. I'd like to act like I'm a hoss about it all but, honestly, after the air sirens wake me up, it often takes me a while to get back to sleep. Last night, I finally just moved my mattress to the foyer in my Airbnb, which is the only place I have that follows the "two walls rule" (<--context) and put my earbuds in playing white noise and said "fuck it, I ain't seeking shelter no matter what Putin sends." It worked, and I'm doing it for the remainder of my time here.

My shoulder is 12 weeks  post op so I am a ways out from being a 100% with my hands. But, prior to this setback i had been planning a month over there, helping however I can when I'm between big projects. My kid is 18 so Im not real concerned about risk. I think in the coming economy i could be more useful with my labor vs my wallet and it's easy enough for me to schedule projects in a way where I can be gone for 30 days.  Sorry fellas I personally wouldn't be chasing tail.  Ukraine is going to need  a lot of help for a long time.

Tatiana was a cutie. We met up and walked through Kyiv for about an hour, then had dinner at a good Ukranian restaurant named Kanapa. Dinner and conversation were good, and I scored major bonus points when I helped her put her coat on, and knew I was in good shape -- "you are gentleman, not like American." After that, we walked St. Andrew's descent doing the "arms locked" date strolling thing, and toured the Podil neighborhood and grabbed a coffee. By then it was getting late and she had like a 20 mins ride from where she parked her car and she'd be cutting it close on curfew, so we hopped a Bolt/Uber back to the center and had a nice passionate kiss outside of her car and said we'd see each other again. We did see each other again a couple days later and it was fun. :) Also, sample size of one, but it seems like East Slavic chicks deploy tongue later than usual when kissing, at least compared to Americans and Latinas.

Germans need to get it together. They're currently scrambling to try to quickly hold a second round of votes.

Friedrich Merz’s bid to become Germany’s chancellor fails in parliament in a stunning defeat

Spoiler

BERLIN (AP) — In a historic first, conservative leader Friedrich Merz ’s bid to become Germany’s 10th chancellor since World War II failed by six votes in parliament on Tuesday, a stunning defeat as he had been widely expected to win smoothly.

A candidate for chancellor has never failed to win on the first ballot since the end of the war. The loss triggered a stock market slide: the DAX, the index of major German companies, was down 1.8% following the vote.

Merz needed a majority of 316 out of 630 votes. He only received 310 votes — well short of the 328 seats held by his coalition, which is also one of the slimmest postwar majorities. Because the vote was held by secret ballot, it was not immediately clear — and might never be known — who had defected from Merz’s camp.

Merz’s coalition is led by his center-right Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union. They are joined by the center-left Social Democrats, outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party. The parties were now to regroup to discuss the next step but it was also unclear how long the process could take.

Merz is seeking to take the helm of the 27-nation European Union’ s most populous member after Scholz’s government collapsed last year and a national election was held in February. Scholz, despite his official farewell on Monday, remains in a caretaker role until a new chancellor takes over.

Denying Ukraine the aid already promised and paid for has some new details...

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/order-by-hegseth-cancel-ukraine-weapons-caught-white-house-off-guard-2025-05-06/

Quote

An order halting military aid authorized under the Biden administration went into effect officially a month later, on March 4, with a White House announcement.
The story of how flights were canceled, detailed by Reuters for the first time, points to an at-times haphazard policy-making process within the Trump administration and a command structure that is unclear even to its own ranking members.

The multiday pause of the flights, confirmed by five people with knowledge of it, also shows confusion in how the administration has created and implemented national security policy. At the Pentagon, the disarray is an open secret, with many current and former officials saying the department is plagued by internal disagreements on foreign policy, deep-seated grudges, and inexperienced staff.

Reuters couldn’t establish exactly when Hegseth’s office ordered the freight flights canceled. Two sources said Ukrainian and European officials began asking about the pause on February 2. The TRANSCOM records indicate that there was a verbal order from “SECDEF” – the secretary of defense – that stopped the flights and that they had resumed by February 5.

“This is consistent with the administration's policy to move fast, break things and sort it out later. That is their managing philosophy,” said Mark Cancian, a retired Marine officer and defense expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. “That is great for Silicon Valley. But when you’re talking about institutions that have been around for hundreds of years, you are going to run into problems.”

The NSC process is broken, even before Loomer went buckwild in there they had ransacked the professional staff. Cabinet heads are left making decisions based on what they think they heard. Will get worse before it gets better, Rubin may try to instill some discipline but the simple fact is that the machine can’t run if you strip off too many parts.

You're telling me that running DoD like elon musk's twitter takeover is not a good idea for our warfighting and deterrance posture?

Germans need to get it together. They're currently scrambling to try to quickly hold a second round of votes.

Friedrich Merz’s bid to become Germany’s chancellor fails in parliament in a stunning defeat

Merz did a good job pissing off some of the coalition he needed to get elected in the lead up to the vote. He lost a lot of the goodwill he would have had prior to taking the role.

Merz just elected chancellor. Probably a good thing for Ukraine as long as this doesn't weaken him too significantly.

He worked with AfD on an immigration bill months ago. There were protests and he went to the German tax authorities looking into the tax free status of some organizations that helped organize the protests. He's not exactly in a great position unless he starts to prove himself to his coalition partners.

❗️Spectacular destruction of the 🇷🇺Russian 152-mm self-propelled howitzer "Msta-S" as a result of strikes by 🇩🇪German HF-1 kamikaze drones in the eastern direction

Last night, drones paid another unexpected visit to Russia. Lipetsk, Ryazan, Tula, Tambov, and Moscow regions were all part of the uninvited tour. The situation got so exciting that 13 airports had to hit pause. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense proudly claims it shot down over 100 drones.
