I'm as hawkish as any about us getting involved (even to the point of going hot over this if the right circumstances exist), but to be quite frank, this is accurate.  We won't be doing anything about it, and if it plays out in the worst case scenario even then I doubt we would actively do anything beyond upping our current support level for the Ukrainians.  That's a shit deal for the Ukrainians, and I don't like it one bit.

What could we do? Let's be honest. And I am a Hawk like you, but this is an are that scares me.

I don't think Russia will do it. Putin maybe, and perhaps he has a back channel to groups on the ground. But not their MOD. Not some Colonel.

We shall see.

This flap over accounting could be as simple as DoD leadership wanting to brag about the highest numbers possible internationally to prod other nations to donate. But now that further Hill support isn’t a given, we’re looking for ways to keep the sugar flowing.

Anyway, it’s a gift horse.

Yep. And don't forget end of year.

"Yo, Sgt. Major, got some shit we can get rid of?"

"Yes Sir, we got these Bradleys that are killing me on sustainment."

"Can we send them to Ukraine?"

"Yeah, give me a day or two, might have to call in some people to lubricate the bearings, but hell I had the slotted for painting rocks this week."

"OK, call TRANSCOM. I will call the FMS Lead"

Sniper footage of the Ukrainian Separate Special Battalion Berlingo repulsing a Russian attack at the end of spring. Location unknown. Two Russian assaulting squads have been destroyed by sniper and machine gun fire.https://t.co/iDPWjRPrVT

from all the reports im seeing right now there is a divisional attack that is going on (or went on) in the south near where the 47th / 128th brigades are in south ukraine. it failed, and im seeing reports from many places that the loss to the russian side is huge. lets wait and…

russians on the attack, ukr taking them out
today? probably 4-6000 TOTAL, about 2-4000 combat troops
yes, they are moving a division from the south to engage ukr forces, and not doing a good job at it.

#Russia has confirmed the death of the Chief of Staff of the 35th Army of the Armed Forces, Major General Sergei Goryachev in #Ukraine. An official message appeared in the Pskov paratroopers group.

2/ The 'We can explain' Telegram channel reports that men in the 1439th regiment, which has suffered severe losses in fighting near Avdiivka, say their officers are extorting them for payments of 100,000 rubles ($1,188) for leave or avoidance of frontline duties.
4/ "I wrote to the military prosecutor's office back in April. There is still no reply. I recently found out: in order to go on leave, the command takes money - a hundred thousand rubles." Commanders also demand 100,000 rubles for soldiers not to go to the front line.

Thread on old roads crossing the Dnipro before the reservoir was built in the 1940's, i.e. potential bridgehead opportunities for Ukraine to cross the dry lake bed.

1/ Its been 2 weeks since the Russians destroyed the #KakhovkaHPP dam. What will the Dnipro River look like when it returns to its pre-reservoir (before 1955) position? Where are the possible crossing locations? How might UAF exploit these crossing opportunities? A #NAFOWeather🧵

take this with a VERY large grain of salt:

"The Armed Forces of Ukraine are located in the village of Sadove above Tokmak. And God forbid, if this is a single group of 50-100 people" - PrigozhinP.S. The village itself is 23 km from the front line, this is a deep rear.

Sadove is on the outskirts of Tokmak. Probably special forces or partisans - unlikely to be regular army.

There’s a big Ukraine reconstruction conference in London today and we pledged 1.3 billion while the UK pledged 3. I’m glad to see a kind-of European nation leading, although to be frank— Washington has more credit in Brussels, Paris and Berlin than a Tory London.

But Ukraine needs a Marshall Plan. And the EU needs to lead. This is a good fist step.

.@holger_r and I spoke to "Karl," the Estonian military analyst. His thoughts on the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the Kakhovka Dam, and Belgorod: 🧵

Extreme longcat follows.

Spoiler
"For the time being, progress is scarce. A few tens of square kilometers have been liberated. This is only natural given how long it took to liberate Kherson from the moment the first attacks were launched there."

"In southern Ukraine, it may take longer, as the area is larger and logistically still covered by Russia. When the Kherson bridges were destroyed, the Russians had a very difficult logistical situation there. In the south, the Russians now also have difficulties."

"But a large railway bridge was blown up between Melitopol and Dzhankoi in northern Crimea. This means that there is no rail access to Melitopol. Reloading will have to be done again farther away from the railway line, making it all technically more difficult."

"There is no longer any danger that the Russians could advance from there."

"There has also been some advance by Ukraine from the Orikhiv direction southwards towards Zaporizhia, but progress there is less."

"The element of surprise as to where the Ukrainian offensive would now come from was not possible. The Russians were waiting from all directions. Only Donetsk would have been a surprise, as it has very strong fortifications."

"Without it, it will be very difficult to retake territory. In that case there would be hordes of corpses."

"The destruction of the Kahhovka dam has been a major source of concern for the Ukrainians. And also the Western media's fake balanced attitude. There is also enough information today to be convinced that it was the Russians who did it."

"The informed working version is currently as follows. The dam was damaged anyway and some things were not working properly there. The Russians wanted to use a controlled explosion to raise the flow to avoid flooding around the dam."

"Russia has had a big problem with what happened in Belgorod a couple of weeks ago. Sooner or later the Ukrainians will continue this operation. For two reasons: 1) To prevent Russia from firing on Ukrainian territory from there. 2) To bind Russian units."

"Russia has brought in 2 to 5 battalions, according to various versions, but Ukraine is operating with units smaller than a battalion. The border is long."

"Ukraine has had a hard time in the air. At the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian Air Force was at least ten times smaller than the Russian one. The Russians haven't shot down very many Ukrainian planes, but as they are old planes, their flying time is simply running out."

"It will remain difficult to find a solution. The reason for this is the procrastination by Ukraine's supporters. If the F16 decision had been made in January in the same package with the tanks, they would not be on the front line today, but they would be very close to it."

"I think that maybe still by the end of the year F-16s will be available, but the weather will be overcast and both Russian and Ukrainian fighters won't fly very much."

"Western equipment losses are by no means dramatic. Russia has photographed the same situation from a hundred angles and presents it as new information. There is talk of two Leopards being hit, one of which is back in line already."

The Ukrainians captured one russian and said that they strapped a bomb to his back. If he does not do what they say, they will blow it up. But in reality it was just a wooden stick. He was then told to go to his positions and call others, so he brought 2 other russians

And as a former artillery scout (Fister), that blew my mind seeing the soldier holding a smartphone showing him real-time UAV footage of exactly where his rounds were dropping. I knew it was happening at a low-tech kind of way in Ukraine (simple off-the-shelf UAV controlled by somebody at the battery), but to actually see that in real-time was wild.

Took a month, but it got here.

I think there will be a lot of effort put in - once this is over, it's in Europe's best interests to help Ukraine develop its offshore energy resources, and after this, Russia will be kept in check (and most likely Moldova will be resolved as well). Georgia is kind of screwed.

Russia straight up allowing criminals and mentally ill, etc. in the military.  Before it was just Wagner.  Probably prepping for a mobilization, but it also speaks volumes about how much of a drain this has been on young men, if they are having to open the ranks up to criminals and the "partially fit".

June 20 Assessment Highlight:The #Russian State Duma passed a law that would allow citizens w/ a criminal record & citizens deemed “partially fit” for mil. service to sign contracts w/ the Russian mil. in periods of wartime, mobilization or martial law.https://t.co/KAhDs78eWu

You should be always careful what Prigozhin says but in one thing I’m pretty sure that he is right on spot. The Russian command and especially the Kremlin are constantly fed lies by their subordinates.  In reference to Putin this is absolute certain because he removed all advisors around him who would have warned him about this war in the first place. In such atmosphere every wrong decision is only succeeded by a worse decision, until everything breaks apart.

Even though Prigozhin’s primary intention is becoming the leader of Russia, he also points exactly this development out. The counteroffensive is far more complex then moving troops from one village to another one. We have seen how Ukrainian long range weapons eliminated several bases and logistics centers.

The bulk of the Ukrainian army still hasn’t moved a bit and Russians are already having all hands full to deal with the situation as it is right now. When you reflect all of this you can safely say that Prigozhin’s rant is likely genuine and this comes only after a day when Strelkov mentioned Russia’s demise as well. But aside from attacking his political opponents such as Shoigu he offers no real alternative. He is part of the system (and problem), like Strelkov. The Russian regime elements are at each other’s throats and it will end with many of them being fenestrated, sooner or later.

New with @JimmySecUK for @YahooNews. Ukraine's counteroffensive is slowly making progress in spite of serious obstacles. Think Kherson, not Kharkiv. It's also causing more agita between Prigozhin and the Russian military: https://t.co/vg07gEbN9S
We cannot conduct warfare in this bureaucratic way because we are concerned about provoking Putin, says @AndersFoghR at the @AtlanticCouncil.Putin has exploited our long decision-making processes to fortify Russian defenses in Donbas and Crimea, he adds.➡️…
European NATO has everything needed to keep the continent of Europe safe, it just needs to be more effective in its organization. One example, soon European states combined will be flying approx 500 F-35s. A Ukrainian victory and Ukraine in NATO should give Europe time to do this

Russia has lost this war in so many different ways that historians are going to be able to milk this thing for years. There were too many ways to lose for one single moment to be The Moment.

You can start from the beginning: "USA says Russia about to invade Ukraine." "What? No, they're completely lying. We would never invade Ukraine!" Proceeds to invade Ukraine

And then just about every moment since then.

Just off the top of my head, Russia has lost by:

  • Looking like complete idiots on the global stage by denying USA reports... then doing exactly what the USA reports said
  • Failing to retake Ukraine in 3 days
  • Created a massive brain drain of their best and brightest
  • Killed off most of their young men, at a time when the population is declining
  • Strengthened NATO in a number of ways
    • Historically neutral countries like Finland and Sweden have applied to join (and been accepted)
    • Caused Europe to realize the danger Russia still represents and increase military spending
  • Lost customers for their military equipment, as said equipment has gotten absolutely spanked on the battlefield
  • Lost customers for their military equipment, as sanctions have kept them from being able to build things
  • Lost billions of rubles to sanctions and appropriations
  • Historically neutral country Switzerland has taken a side -- against them
  • Russian Allies in Africa visited... and got bombed while there
  • Lost a potential ally in China, their neighbor, and began the process of becoming a vassal state for China
    • Side note: China has lots of unmarried men and Russia has killed off their young men so... Russian womens for chinese men!
  • Oh hey, remember how Europe used to be dependent upon, and spent tons of money on, Russian oil and gas? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • Neighbor states are getting bold
  • Revolutionary groups are getting bold

I mean how much fucking around do you have to do to find out THIS MUCH

1/ QUICK THREAD about some of the communications problems still encountered by the Russian forces in Ukraine - from a pro-Kremlin Telegram channel. Main points below: https://t.co/SaKbvAtcpY
3/ "...the requirements for comms tech are constantly growing. (Chinese-made) "Baofengs" (radios) often no longer meet the needs of the forces due to enemy EW threat, (Russian-made) "Azart" radio systems still don't work well. And we do not just judge by volunteer efforts."
5/ "At the same time, the enemy uses electronic warfare, decoys cell towers on their front line, and aims them at ours. He knows about the Russian officer Telegram chats and understands: this is a spare (and often the main) channel for our command and control."
7/ According to this Telegram post, massive OPSEC issues still persist across the Russian forces a year and a half in to this invasion.
