These numbers are staggering. This is absolutely a meat grinder for Russians and it doesn’t include Wagner.

I call that a good start.

This should turn out well

For the younger folks, a nice little intro to 1987's Cherry 2000 - see what mid-1980s film writers were coming up with.

In the year 2017, the United States has fragmented into post-apocalyptic wastelands with a few civilized areas. An ongoing economic crisis has led to the recycling of aging 20th-century mechanical and technological equipment. Society has also become averse to intimacy, as well as both increasingly hypersexualized and bureaucratic. Robotic technology has produced Gynoids as substitutes for wives. The declining instances of actual sex among men and women is litigious, with one brothel having lawyers draft up contracts detailing the intended sexual rendezvous.

I don't know if it's matter of them not reading the room and realizing what this sounds like to the rest of the world.

Or not giving a shit.

Going to go with "not giving a shit".

I think I finally learned to accept that that behavior is normal to them.   It is just that our minds can’t accept the fact that how they think could be normal.   To some extent our refusal to believe what’s right in front of our face is a problem for us.

I suspect anyone with some intelligence becomes a drunk while the rest just choose to no longer exercise their brain to survive. The few who keep trying fall out of windows if they don’t take the hint.

Boy howdy, you can say that again. So much of russia and putins strategy (and pretty much any authoritarian) rely on doing things SO BEYOND THE PALE that a large chunk of the population doesn't believe it could happen.

Russia has been exporting their discontent via propaganda and disinformation for decades now, and getting the truth good and lubed up. That way, people more readily doubt their lying eyes or reflexively distrust expert and institutional opinion

Battle for Avdiivka: situation as of October 22, 2023

"Rifle battles do not stop at any time of day or night. Russians throw large forces with infantry and armored vehicles, they have crazy losses but that doesn't stop them, the assaults continue. They push like mad, are put down in dozens and after some time come again. There's so many of them" - head of Avdiivka military administration Barabash.

After defeating massive attacks by armored convoys on October 10-14 and 19, the Russian command continues assault operations with infantry forces.

On October 22, Russian infantry launched 5 attacks north of Avdiivka, all of which were repelled.

The maximum advance of Russian troops is up to 1.5 km in depth on the front and up to 1 km in width. The enemy has reached a narrow section of the railroad line and the foot of the Avdiivka heap. The Russians cannot occupy the spoil heap itself - it has become a gray zone that is visible and can be shot at. Russian assault groups have climbed the spoil heap several times, but most of the assault aircraft are destroyed, and the Russians cannot gain a foothold on the spoil heap, they are staying at the foot of the heap.

The tactical situation remains favorable for Ukrainian troops. The 110th Mechanized Brigade and its attached units have held the flanks and commanding heights.

The Russian troops are trapped in a narrow sack in the lowlands, which is controlled by fire. And now the Russians have to rotate, a maneuver with heavy losses. The Russians will not be able to hold their positions in the lowlands if they are under such constant fire.

Let me remind you that the 114th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces launched an offensive north of Avdiivka against the villages of Stepove-Berdychi on October 1 to cut the main road to the city.

On October 10-14, the Russians sent additional forces to the attack - two fresh motorized rifle brigades, the 15th and 21st.

On October 19, the fourth brigade, the 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade, was sent to break through.

On October 20-22, the Russians stopped massive attacks with armored vehicles due to heavy losses. To continue the assault, combined assault units are formed from four brigades and other units of the 1st Corps, including the 'Pyatnashka' special forces brigade.

On October 20-22, the Russians stopped massive armored attacks as a result of the Russians bringing in additional reserves from the 106th Airborne Division and some tank battalions.

Only in the area of the 110th Brigade and attached forces, more than 200 units of Russian armored vehicles were destroyed and damaged. Phenomenal figures. Hundreds of corpses are lying in the fields and plantations, the count continues, but the occupiers have lost at least 800 dead. 30 Russian storm troopers have been captured - they look well motivated and trained, but they raised their hands because they made a smart choice and will live. Ukrainian soldiers proved to be stronger.

Ukraine holds Avdiivka thanks to the personnel of the 110th Mechanized Brigade and attached forces - the 2nd Battalion of the Presidential Brigade, which took the brunt of the attack, individual battalions from the 116th and 129th Armored Brigades, the 1st Tank Brigade, the 31st Mechanized Brigade, the 52nd Separate Rifle Battalion, and the 105th State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

There are no words to describe the heroism of the soldiers of the 110th Mechanized Brigade. This brigade has been defending Avdiivka for a year and a half without any rotations at all! Many units have been living in their positions without any exits from Avdiivka, which is being shelled by all kinds of weapons. Not even like that - they live and fight continuously at their positions. It is even hard to imagine. Since September 30, the 110th Brigade and its attached units have been in continuous combat. These men of steel are fighting in conditions that no army in the world can withstand, and Russians simply run away in such conditions.

Our soldiers are tired of long battles. The Russians also hope that Ukrainians will get tired of fighting them. The defenders of Avdiivka need to be replenished and reinforced to be able to gradually give the soldiers a rest after 23 days of continuous fighting.

It is important to note that the command of the 110th Mechanized Brigade, which is leading the defense, enjoys the trust of all units defending Avdiivka. Such trust is crucial in a critical situation to maintain the control of the troops.

Currently, the enemy is trying to create a superiority in forces south of Avdiivka to ease the situation. The 9th, 110th and 55th motorized rifle brigades of the Russian Armed Forces are attacking here. The enemy is trying to break through the defense of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area of Vodiane-Opytne. The enemy is making progress in the area. However, Ukrainian troops are holding the flanks securely and inflicting significant losses on the Russians.

The 59th Motorized Brigade reliably holds all positions and repels all enemy attacks in the direction of Pervomaiske with significant losses for the Russians.

South of Avdiivka, Ukrainian troops also have every opportunity to successfully defend and defeat the Russian attack group. It all depends on the timely and thoughtful use of reserves and military equipment.

The crisis in the Avdiivka area is not over. Holding the frontline and powerful attacks on the occupiers are costing Ukrainian soldiers dearly.

The Ukrainian command has had enough time to respond and is, of course, pulling up reserves. All Russian attacks have been repelled, the Russian advance is dangerous, but the main line of defense has held, and it will be much harder for them to hold on to what the Russians have captured than to continue attacking.

We are talking about a military in 2023 that has units whose designated task is to shoot other units that retreat without orders.

Lots of good detail from that reporting. At the 26-second mark of the above Twitter video clip, you can see the "soil heap" that's being referred to. I think in American English we'd call it a slag heap. Anyway, this google map link shows the area that's the primary focus of that account, along with Avdviivka, Stepove, and Berdychi. I don't think I realized how very close it is to the major city of Donetsk (only about 10 miles from the city center mas o menos).

Turkey is surprisingly moving Sweden’s bid for NATO to parliament, which ordinarily means that it will be done quickly.

Turkey's Erdogan submits Sweden's NATO bid to parliament for ratification -presidency https://t.co/nl2Z5EkLUt

Let’s see how Orban reacts as he usually waits for Erdogan. Also a question- is Turkey about to be more intransigent in the Middle East? Erdogan likes to keep his quarrels with NATO and the U.S. manageable and focused, this could be a sign he’s abandoning the fake one he never really cared about for one more important.

eventually after Russia finally is pushed out and simply can't go on any more, with hundreds of thousands of their men dead and even more hundreds of thousands who are either freed violent criminals or suffering from insane PTSD...

What do you even do with that? Even if you oust Putin, the next sucker in line has a huge rebuilding job.

That WaPo article is really interesting: https://archive.ph/BcdAR

The CIA basically built from the ground up a new spy agency in Ukraine following the annexation of Crimea because the old one was so prone to infiltration by the Russians and has given them all kinds of cool toys but still works closely with the old one. It's been involved in a number of targeted killings and assassinations that the CIA claims not to be involved in, including blowing up the car of the daughter of the Russian propagandist with her in it. It was also responsible for the two attacks on the Kerch Bridge, plus the one on the Kremlin. More troubling was this bit that I thought had been put to rest:

The two services overlap operationally to some degree, though officials said the SBU tends to pursue more complex missions with longer lead-times while the GUR tends to work at a faster tempo. Ukraine officials denied that either agency was directly involved in the September 2022 attack on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea, though U.S. and other Western intelligence agencies have concluded that Ukraine was linked to the plot.

Another detail I was curious about while reading:

Concerned that the GUR’s aging facilities were likely compromised by Russian intelligence, the CIA paid for new headquarters buildings for the GUR’s “spetsnaz” paramilitary division and a separate directorate responsible for electronic espionage.

The new capabilities were transformative, officials said.

“In one day we could intercept 250,000 to 300,000 separate communications” from Russian military and FSB units, said a former senior GUR official. “There was so much information that we couldn’t manage it ourselves.”

Troves of data were relayed through the new CIA-built facility back to Washington, where they were scrutinized by CIA and NSA analysts, officials said.
“We were giving them the ability — through us — to collect on” Russian targets, the former GUR official said. Asked about the magnitude of the CIA investments, the official said: “It was millions of dollars.”

In time, the GUR had also developed networks of sources in Russia’s security apparatus, including the FSB unit responsible for operations in Ukraine. In a measure of U.S.-Ukraine trust, officials said, the CIA was permitted to have direct contact with agents recruited and run by Ukrainian intelligence.

The resulting intelligence windfall was largely hidden from public view, with intermittent exceptions. The SBU began posting incriminating or embarrassing communications intercepts, including one in which Russian commanders were captured discussing their country’s culpability in the 2014 shoot-down of a Malaysian Airlines passenger jet.

Even so, officials said the intelligence obtained through the U.S.-Ukraine cooperation had its limits. The Biden administration’s prescient warnings about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s determination to topple the Kyiv government, for example, were based primarily on separate streams of intelligence Ukraine wasn’t privy to initially.

In some ways, officials said, Ukraine’s own collection efforts fed the skepticism that Zelensky and others had about Putin’s plans because they were eavesdropping on military and FSB units that themselves were not informed until the eve of the war. “They were getting an accurate picture from people who were also in the dark,” one U.S. official said.

It's really, really surprising that this much detail is getting out.
