Hey man, I hate to take away from the events overseas, but it’s “Smoky Bear”. There’s no “the”. Like with Ukraine.

My nickname amongst friends was The Bear then Smokey The Bear.

assuming and hoping this is a true story, from an AP reporter. Lol, bunch of brave Georgians sticking it to Russia, here's to 2008:

Georgian oil tanker refuses to fuel a Russian ship. The Russians:  "Leave politics aside! We just need fuel!" Georgians: "Russian ship, go fuck yourself. Glory to Ukraine! And you can always use oars, so, row!"

My dad's commentary (he commanded Shermans in Nuremberg, during the 60s)
We reversed every other center guide on the track and it was just like we had track shoes in either mud, snow or ice! [emoji23][emoji3590]
We could go anywhere with 62 tons, but I do remember one tank stuck in mud up to the turret. They would make fun of you if you did that! [emoji23][emoji3590]

My dad’s tank, a M4A3 76(W) Sherman. You can see the improvised “duckbills” attached to the tread in France. It made the tread wider, and so less prone to sink in mud. It was a fix, not a cure. The heavier the tank, the more problematic. The Easy 8’s HVSS suspensions were much better, but too few too late.

One extra thought, I wonder if Putin tells Zelinskyy at the table to lay down arms or he'll throw down tactical nukes

And Zelensky replies "You and I both know those nukes will explode in your own troops' faces.  So fuck off."

Russia is the aggy of superpowers.

Yep. In his life-long mission to rebuild a Russian Empire, he may have just led it to its complete collapse.

If you want to really see that happen, have the US pledge to go back to full scale exploration, drilling and production with
OPEC agreeing on increase production as well.

Reduce the buying power of the rubble by half and kill the only real Russian export and they will crumble internally and revolt..

Because of two decades of shady and crappy foreign/energy policy in Europe. That includes us but mostly western Europe.  So yeah, I think we (the democratic world) could have done something to dissuade Putin. Maybe not in the last two weeks. So if y'all want to keep talking like the football field is 10 yards long and celebrate 1st downs like Baylor and OU then be my guest. Nobody is near the goalline on this one.

We are herding cats because we didn't spay the cats to begin with. Yay us!  And none of this is a conversation without the badassery of the Ukraine people. Their grit and sacrifice has allowed us to get off our assesses and try something.

We let the bully bluster without ever calling him on it. As true as the adages go, the bully turned out to be all hot air.

Unfortunately, he got so overconfident and took action, showing his ass for all to see.

Seems like every Ukrainian dude has a voice deeper than even Suzy Kolber's.

Some slightly unscientific observations from Twitter and Google Maps Traffic:  I found it interesting that through yesterday there had been many reports of Russian forces setting up checkpoints in various areas of Ukraine but still letting civilians through.  I would guess that would in part be because Putin would like to burden European resources with a large migrant problem, improve the Russian/Ukrainian population balance for his post-war governance, and optics (in the early stages when he thought a quick decapitation and then win was possible.  "We kept your power on and didn't target you, just the leaders.")  Curious if that checkpoint strategy has changed.

Watching GMaps Traffic during all this, the flows near the hotspots peter out overnight, but have often resumed in the morning.  You could clearly see the many miles backup for all the Polish crossings, but even today such lines were much, much shorter for the border crossings of Slavakia, Hungary, and western Romania.  However those are longer drives with many routes over mountains and several slow segments (Ukrainian internal checkpoints) that could be a riskier trip if you weren't carrying fuel cannisters.  One of the TV crews took 14 hours yesterday to move from the back of the line for a Polish crossing southward down to Chop, where they said there were minimal backups.  However today there was a lot more red and orange along the interior roads to these southwestern borders.  At times today the backups at the Polish crossings stretched all the way to Lviv, with reports that some have been in those lines for 4 days now.  But at least that's close enough to walk the rest of the way if you run out of gas.

Very curious about how the last 3 days one significant route near the Polish border hasn't shown any use, the T1404 road from Ostriv to Rava-Rus'ka.  I'm guessing Ukraine has shut access to it.  Maybe because it runs many miles right next to the border that appears to be easy to cross on foot in winter:  no river, relatively flat, and best I can tell no fence yet, just a border path.  (Poland is a month into a 5-month fence project for the Belarus boundary after Putin tried to provoke a migrant crisis there recently, but last I read was only considering a Ukraine fence.)  Closed to prevent males 18-60 from escaping?  Or possible for military resupply entry, to avoid potentially endangering masses of evacuees if using the existing border crossing routes should Russia attempt strikes?

The primary evac route out of Kiev was due west on the E40, but last night a short segment was shown as closed.  Tonight that has expanded for 40 miles further west.  Such displayed closures have often coincided with nearby fighting, though it doesn't seem to be indicative of Russian control.  Today there was only 2 routes out of Kiev showing use, to the southwest and to the south (though only to about 25 miles south of Kiev.)

And nobody seems to know what to send to Putin's upcoming funeral.  Would candlesticks make a nice gift?
