"Yes, but what about all these Sharpies?  Where do they go?"

Interesting look back.  Amusing to see the same armor being used 45 years later.  Maybe even some of the same personnel.

Why Russians are fighting against Russia: ‘Putin has not only ruined Ukraine, he’s ruined my country’

Sam Kiley meets Russian volunteers in Ukraine’s army near the southern front line who explain why they turned on Vladimir Putin – and how they’re happy to kill their countrymen

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Working as an agent for Ukraine and attacking Russia’s railways was pretty easy, says Lazzy – a Russian fighting against his own country.

“It’s not that complicated. Anyone in Russia can freely buy gasoline – for now, while some refineries still work – and set the railway on fire,” he explains.

“Of course, you need to prepare the exit routes. To plan the operation, so to speak. You can’t just go for a walk and decide to do it. First, recon, then action. But in fact, anyone can do it.”

The saboteur burned “several” railway-switching and electrical systems in arson attacks in Russia’s Volga region.

The truth, though, is that it was dangerous and ate away at his nervous system. Which is why he walked across Russia’s border and joined Ukraine’s army to fight against Vladimir Putin.

For the last year, he has been a frontline soldier battling in the shattered rubble of what is now known as the “dead zone”, because it’s so thinly populated by soldiers from both sides, all hiding from enemy drones – with occasional sneak attacks in person.

“I think it’s easier for me here. Because in Russia, I constantly felt fear for my life,” he says. “Here in Ukraine, FSB and GRU [secret service] networks are not so strong. In Russia, it’s much more dangerous. Also, [in Russia] there are many people who support the regime. Say the wrong word and they will rat on you.”

Lazzy chose to fight Putin’s regime because of what he saw as cronyism, corruption and the destruction of democracy: “Russia must have a future.”

As he talks, his face is hidden and he’s known only by his military callsign. The Independent met him just a short drive from the front lines where he’s fighting in Ukraine’s south.

“Here, in Ukraine, I can defend myself with weapons. Yes, it’s scary on the positions. They want to kill you. But it’s clear: either you or them.”

He is part of Ukraine’s Freedom of Russia Legion, which operates under the control of Kyiv’s military intelligence services like other foreign volunteer units. The legion claims to field several hundred men. They are all Russians. In Moscow they would be executed as traitors.

In Ukraine, they have fought in Sumy province, lost heavily in the bitter battle for Bakhmut, and say they have been involved in driving back recent Russian assaults on the front line of the southern battlefields.

Ukraine has stepped up its campaign both inside occupied territory and in Russia itself. In its most spectacular strikes, Ukraine managed to disable Russian bombers in the covert Operation Spiderweb, involving multiple targets and agents on the ground.

Russian refineries and power stations are regularly attacked by Ukraine’s new long-range drones.

But the Freedom of Russia Legion has eyes on defending Ukraine locally. And then fighting in Russia to topple Putin altogether. The latter would be welcomed by Kyiv but is not a stated aim.

Ceasar, a veteran Russian fighter in Ukraine’s army, began his opposition against Putin with what he calls “terrorist attacks”. For at least the last three-and-a-half years he has been in Ukraine’s army. He is driven by religious fervour and monarchist dreams of the return of a tsar to Russia.

Originally from Sochi, he says he does not worry about killing fellow Russians.

“I do not feel bad for killing my own citizens, because they’re doing very bad things here and I saw how they killed civilians, how they raped, how they robbed and they want to destroy Ukraine. Putin has ruined not only Ukraine, he's ruined also my country,” says Ceasar.

He is armed, like Lazzy, with a modern M16-type rifle, originally an American design. It is rapidly replacing the AK-47 in Ukraine’s armoury.

Ceasar describes the reality on the front lines of a war he has chosen to join.

“There’s not a lot of military personnel at the front like it was two or three years ago. We are all dispersed. We are now about two or three men, at most, sitting in a bunker. Because if we will put there, a dozen men, they will be killed,” he says.

“It’s very dangerous to move in and move out. It’s the most dangerous part of the operation.”

Soldiers are forced to spend weeks, sometimes months, in foxholes and bunkers, trying to survive constant artillery and drone attacks.

Referring to Lazzy, he continues: “On the last operation he was about 45 days on the position. I was about three weeks. It’s really hard.

“Every day, every time you dig in, dig in, dig in and again, dig in.”

Over the last few weeks, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has been touring the West seeking long-range missiles and air-defence systems.

Putin has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure, focusing on energy and transport systems ahead of the winter freeze.

Russian troops have also advanced in small bounds at huge cost east of Kharkiv, and already committed murder in Pokrovsk against local civilians left behind by Ukrainian withdrawal. But drone warfare has kept the Russians back.

Ukraine’s problem is that drones cannot fly in high winds, rain, fog or when it is snowing. Putin’s forces are likely to exploit bad winter weather and attempt to break through Ukrainian lines when drones are grounded.

That is when Lazzy and Ceasar will face their toughest test.

Belgorod Dam.  Is that in occupied Ukraine, or Russia proper?

Are those fuse boxes blowing up because of old-fashioned sabotage or some kinda web hacking?

Russia proper, a little northeast of Kharkiv.

Edit: Sabotage. They're lighting them on fire.

Belgorod is a major hub in Russia for Russian forces and Russian transportation, especially those around the Kharkiv area in Ukraine. obviously it’s a lot of attention because it’s very close to Ukraine, but it’s really been getting hammered – power infrastructure, railhead, etc..  If they can remove it as a hub, it helps with that part of Ukraine.

Just got off a long call with a good friend in Ukraine.

They provide evacuation support for injured civilians and military. Due to their work with military they are going to lose part (a large part) of their funding. If anyone has tree fiddy take a look. Here is their mission statement. I vouch for his group. Fuckers go into harms way around the world. Met them first in Afghanistan.

MOAS has been present in Ukraine since February of 2022 and currently supports over 150 medics and drivers in the field and maintains 52 ambulances in our fleet, MOAS is an established and reputable humanitarian NGO looking for partners to support a high-impact, innovative and situationally unique program that has saved over 78,000 Ukrainian soldiers and treated 30,000 civilians to date.

The changing geopolitical environment, uncertainty around the possibility of conflict resolution and MOAS’ dedication to providing services to both civilians and military personnel have all contributed to an increasingly challenging and restricted funding landscape for MOAS. As a niche, unique and specialized service provider, the cessation of operations would undoubtedly leave a significant a critical gap in the health pipeline in Ukraine, leading to increased mortality for those in desperate need of care.

What I found interesting is that the military spending was mainly done off the books by forcing banks to lend to companies without requiring collateral while said companies have a poor history of profitability and repayment. So basically the central bank looks okay on the surface but the books of the individual banks look terrible and when those banks start failing, the house of cards will suddenly collapse. And already those banks are having to limit expenditures this year.

Yeah, and those defense companies are known for having profits stolen/skimmed because it's a Russian tradition, all up and down the line which really causes problems since they need those profits to pay back the loans.

Pretty crazy and they are seriously in the situation of things collapsing slowly and then suddenly.

Ukrainian drones target Moscow in overnight attack, mayor says

Editor's Note: This is a developing story.

Dozens of drones targeted the city of Moscow overnight on Oct. 26-27, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

Sobyanin began reporting attacks on the Russian capital on the evening of Oct. 26. As of publication time, Russian forces have reportedly shot down 34 Ukrainian drones flying toward Moscow. Emergency services have been dispatched to all crash sites, Sobyanin said.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims.

Moscow's Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports have temporarily suspended operations in response to the drone threat.

Explosions have been reported in multiple parts of the city and the surrounding region, including the Kommunarka district, according to Russian Telegram channels. No casualties have been reported.

A fire broke out at on oil depot in Serpukhov, Moscow Oblast, on the evening of Oct. 26, the Russian Telegram news channel Astra reported, citing eyewitness footage. The local administration did not disclose the cause of the fire and said the blaze had already been extinguished.

Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the reported strikes.

Kyiv regularly uses long-range drones to target military and industrial targets in Russia, including oil refineries, weapons factories, and ammunition depots. Ukraine allegedly targeted Moscow with 34 drones in a previous overnight strike on Sept. 22.

Russia regularly launches large-scale missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. Over the past two nights, mass attacks against Kyiv have killed five people and Ukrainian drones target Moscow in overnight attack, mayor saysleft dozens injured.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 26 that Russia has attacked Ukraine with nearly 1,200 strike drones and 50 missiles — primarily ballistic missiles — in the past week alone.

Armchair intel analyst mode - wouldn't surprise me if that was meant to make Putin/Kremlin more paranoid and to pull more air defenses into the Moscow area, leaving more areas vulnerable.

Noel: Ukrainian strike drones have been tracked over Donetsk, Luhansk, Belgorod, Lipetsk, Kursk, Bryansk, and Oryol regions, with routes pushing toward Kaluga, Tula, and Moscow oblasts. Russian channels report urgent evacuation of aircraft near Moscow and bombers from Engels-2 over fears of imminent strikes.

Ukraine destroys Russian Buk air defense system worth $45 million, military says
October 27, 2025 6:13 am

Ukrainian forces successfully detected and destroyed a state-of-the-art Russian Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system valued at $45 million, Ukraine's Land Forces reported on Oct. 26.
The Buk-M3 is one of Russia's key air defense assets, used to engage targets in the air, on the ground, and on the water.
Ukraine's "Black Forest" brigade struck the target at an unspecified location, the military said. The brigade shared video footage of the operation.
The Buk is a self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missile system, first developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. In the decades since, the Soviet Union and then Russia developed several upgraded versions.
The Buk-M3 is manufactured by Russia's Almaz-Antey defense company, and canreportedly track and engage up to 36 targets simultaneously. The system is designed to target planes, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.
The Buk gained worldwide infamy in 2014 with the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17.
Ukraine has reported destroying Russian Buk systems in previous strikes. In September, Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) reported a successful hit on a Buk-M3 in the Russian-occupied part Zaporizhzhia Oblast. In May, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said they destroyed a Buk-M3 in an undisclosed front-line sector.

This suggests even Moscow's air defenses are lacking?  And Ukraine can release the Kraken?

As the temperatures get colder, the counter-press of Russian ground operations slowly vanish from the headlines and allow Ukrainian drones to dominate the news. As the idea that large parts of Russia will be cold and dark with limited fuel is slowly creeping into the minds of "ethnic Russia" the paranoia steadily grows with the most to lose. How long will it be till Putin overreacts to a perceived slight by an oligarch? How soon until it begins to get whispered that it is better to do something sooner rather than later about the "Putin" problem before he does something to the "elite"? At what point do the suburbs begin to worry that they could be next?

These are interesting times coming this winter.

I noticed that drones are also attacking the area called ‘New Moscow’ - which I understand is a high-end neighborhood where elites live.

I think that photograph of three dudes and a machine gun on the back of a truck trying to protect the Kremlin from drone attacks is one of the most damning photographs of Putin‘s inability to protect Russia that you could have created.  Russia as Somalia.

It’s just an iconic image of failure and incompetence.
