I have this weird feeling that Putin has something terminal with his health.  This isn't his playbook at all.  If he really wanted Donbas he would have said yoink Donbas is mine.  Do something about it. This is way over the top for him

It is odd.  He could have just rolled into Donbas with a far smaller buildup than what he's been doing, and with far less notice.  Granted, Crimea was far easier to invade and hold thanks to geography and he had to be careful that Ukraine wouldn't push them out or kill a shit-ton, but still.

Putin is putting on a show, the ritz if you will.

By the way--the Turkish Air Force is flying an A400M into Ukraine (destination unknown, but probably Kyiv) as we speak.  Presumably delivering some drones?

A little while ago, there was a USAF C130 Hercules heading into Riga from northern Italy. I just checked and guess it's already landed. In the meantime, another has taken off from there and is heading west.

Edit: I may have misremembered the first plane. There's one heading north out of northern Italy, maybe heading to Warsaw.

Russia going after the Baltic states?

Man save me that strain. Some of y’all are high as hell.

Its puff, puff PASS! Not puff, puff, puff. Y’all some stingy mofos.

Let’s keep this to the realm of the possibilities.
Not Russia is going after Venezuela next because he secretly likes arepas and cachapas. Or Russia is going after Senegal next because he wants a shot of going to the quarters in the Copa.
Chingao

There were some hyperventilating articles a few years back about how Putin could launch a lightning quick offensive and roll across the Baltics in a few days, presenting the Alliance with a fait accompli— risk nuclear war to remove him or accept his gains. The issue with that is what we’ve seen in Ukraine— you can’t launch a fast, lightning offensive anymore.  Every Estonian on Twitter will be sounding the warning. It’s just not easy to maneuver the people and machines needed into place without setting off every fucking alarm bell.  And after this? If he steps even close to the line it’s deployment time for the rest of NATO.

As I mentioned earlier, the one thing this gains Putin in Ukraine is the cold comfort of the “this is mine and that is yours” hard border that everyone knows.

He already had his little green men there.   All he had to do was declare then independent says he is sending peacekeepers and have the dudes put on army patches and make a show of a little bit of a convoy and some paratroopers.  But he masses his entire army there.

Russians have some amazing stuff, but how much of that is reliant on the bits and pieces of tech being imported from the West/China?  Because I doubt they are building their EW and AA stuff completely from the ground up with only Russian parts (all of the base electronic components, etc.).

Ahh yes.  That was his "shock and awe" guys he wanted to build up.  Knowing that NATO would shake their fists and say prayers for a few weeks.  Then the quickest that the US can get a significant amount of people over is two weeks.  Then he just says oh.  Ill just stop here then unless you want a war.

Not necessarily drones, Turks don’t have visa free travel to leave overland and they might very well be getting people out.  Lots of reports of eastern airports closing and tractors parked on runways so hostile aircraft can’t use them.

So I've seen folks throwing around 4am local time as the possible time when the Russians start the full-fledged invasion.  Is that 4am Donetsk time (about 5 minutes from now) or Kyiv time (a bit over an hour from now)?  Looks like there is some traffic north of Kharkiv ...

Well, I said 5:00AM the day following the Olympics. Since I was wrong, I'm done guessing.

Jester 2nd floor cafeteria had some PHAT breakfasts because the football cafeteria didn't serve breakfasts!

I went to go eat at Andrews a lot to grab a just-cooked burger (and not the nasty mystery-brown-liquid burgers Jester had) and meet girls there.

Choose your targets, acquire, and Fire!

I’m no war historian buff even tho I pretend to play one. Is this the biggest waste of life/money/resources in the history of the world?

This entire thing seems so totally pointless that It’s amazing how Russian troops haven’t given Putin the middle finger because a lot are going to die for no reason

I started watching the Google traffic maps last weekend and, honestly, it's looked like that every time I've checked. It does make sense that it's troop movements, but I don't think it means anything imminent in isolation based on what I've observed. In this case though, it definitely could be it.

When I was looking into it, I came across something that said Russian soldiers were supposedly no longer allowed to have smart phones but who know how disciplined they are.

Men of Moore Hill checking in. 3rd floor.

Just a quick walk to get some full court games at Clark Field in the evenings. Some good runs in the early 90s. Students mixed with grown ass men.
Jester lunch buffet was the tits. The event was David Koresh and Branch Davidians.

Moorehill third floor. I had views of the Gregory pool from my room. It definitely did not suck.

Supposedly earlier last night in Ukraine (note that it's in the Donetsk region). r/Ukraine is a pretty interesting sub-reddit right now.

Edit: Fuck, it's auto-play. I'll try spoilering to silence it.

Spoiler

I played some pickup games there at the Clark courts and in Gregory, both pre-remodel and post-remodel.

Username checks out.... you're young!  Lulz.

The Gregory outside pool didn't exist in my time there.

Lots of displays of support across Europe for Ukraine according to the r/Ukraine sub.

May 18th?  May Day?

May Day, what the hell is that?

"Why that's the Russian New Year!  We'll have a big parade and serve hot hors d'oeuvres!"

Between this drone and google maps we should know the moment Russian forces make their move into Ukraine.

Captain, how soon can we land?

I can't tell

You can tell me, I'm a doctor

No , I mean I'm just not sure

Can't you take a guess

Well, not for another 2 hours

You take take a guess for another 2 hours?

I’m curious as to the aftermath.
Does a Bolshevik like uprising start against the oligarchs? Do oligarchs install one of their other fellow oligarchs? Does Russia become a vassal with a “friendly” government installed (China or the West)?
Vova going all TuPac (me against the world) doesn’t appear to have a good ending.
Chief of Intelligence back and forth may be a signal that there is not a united front, and there are cracks to be exploited.
Dude is 70 this year. Surely there are some politicos with long knives in Moscow waiting for their time.
и ты, Борис?

We buy Russia for 1 billion dollars.  Initially it will be chided as Blinkens folly but we will rejoice once vibranium is discovered in the Siberian Tundra.  Many men will stake their fortunes to strike it rich in this new frontier.

Radio Free Europe is putting out some good boots-on-the-ground journalism

I was moved by that speech that Zelenskiy gave earlier. It definitely stirred up some old passions for a 1980's kid.

I hope the best for the Ukrainians and the worst for the Russians.

A lot of the military traffic will be slower, making it look like a traffic jam.

Russian soldiers have got to be bored out of their minds, and smartphones for soldiers are portable porn and gaming machines.  I'd imagine their commanders taking the smartphones will be unpopular.

There's definitely got to be some dudes in their 30s and 40s who weren't really aware of/in awe of the Soviet Union, who have only basically known what's been around since '91 or so. They've got to be chomping at the bit.

Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey says they are talking to Turkey about closing off the Straits to Russian ships if/when shit goes down.

Would be interesting of Turkey to do, and it's entirely within their rights to do so, and would put the Russians in a bit of a bind - they'd have to dock in Syria for the duration I suppose.
