when is this happening? i'm watching some guy talk about how things go wrong in space. no shit.

I have a brother in law that just got a job at NASA.  I told him the one thing he had to learn is a good fist pump for when the cameras are on.  Nerds celebrating these landing is always so awkward.

something locked onto something ,which appears to be a good thing, because people are smiling and clapping.

i've been to the international space station inventory mission control in huntsville. 

it kind of cracks me up how nasa always, ALWAYS, puts someone's job description in front of their stations.

i have no idea what any of this means. nasa needs to do a better job explaining these things to mouthbreathers like me.

don't stick some engineer out there to explain things. 

parachute deployed. apparently. 

it's amazing what these guys can engineer and operate from 40 million or so miles away. truly inspiring.

I hope they'll show pictures of the surface today like that one nerd mentioned earlier as a possibility.

waiting on pics just now, it seems

here's an article talking about the delay from the curiosity mission.  it ranges from 4-28 minutes.  that particular landing happened when mars was 13 light minutes from earth.

so really, this landing could have happened when this thread was started and we just didn't know about it.

Apparently the black dots are debris on the camera dust cover, which will be removed later.

Mars has weaker sunlight than Earth because it's much farther away from the Sun. But the lander doesn't need much to operate: The panels provide 600 to 700 watts on a clear day, enough to power a household blender and plenty to keep its instruments conducting science on the Red Planet. Even when dust covers the panels - what is likely to be a common occurrence on Mars - they should be able to provide at least 200 to 300 watts.

The panels are modeled on those used with NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander, though InSight's are slightly larger in order to provide more power output and to increase their structural strength. These changes were necessary to support operations for one full Mars year (two Earth years).

In the coming days, the mission team will unstow InSight's robotic arm and use the attached camera to snap photos of the ground so that engineers can decide where to place the spacecraft's scientific instruments. It will take two to three months before those instruments are fully deployed and sending back data.

In the meantime, InSight will use its weather sensors and magnetometer to take readings from its landing site at Elysium Planitia - its new home on Mars.
