November 27, 20187 yr I'm trying to replace a couple 3way switches in my house. Looks like the original 1940 wiring and it doesn't make any sense to me. Below is a picture of and diagram. I've tried replacing the middle switch ( new switch in photo) but the breaker flips when I turn it on. I've tried wiring it every way possible and same result. What am I doing wrong?
November 27, 20187 yr If it's not obvious how to wire it and to determine what the wires are, call an electrician. Huge downside to getting it wrong.
November 28, 20187 yr Author Got some help on a diy board. It's a Carter Three-way switch with tube and knob wiring. Code violation since 1932. Replaced the switch and closed it up.
