Only tourists and teenagers just learning to drink order an Aperol spritz.

I had one on my first day in Italy ever, in Verona. It sucked and I haven’t had one since.

That sounds like a good idea.  However, I would have missed this: I didn't realize that the second day in Florence would be the celebration of St. Giovanni and the championshipp calcio storico ga

Oh, and by the way--don't order an Aperol spritz. Only tourists and teenagers just learning to drink order an Aperol spritz. Select and Cynar are the preferred local aperitifs for turning into a spritz. They're more bitter and complex than Aperol (but neither is nearly as bitter as Campari, which is also a favorite).

Not sure about that because I've seen plenty of Italians order an Aperol spritz but maybe the vibe is different in Venice (which does tend to lean harder towards more tourists vs other cities). Another option is a Hugo Spritz (pronounced Ugo) or Campari which, honestly, is what I prefer. Although let's be real, I prefer a Negroni. I agree an Aperol Spritz is too tame.

Nailed down our itinerary for the summer

4 nights in Rome in Testaccio (had a chance to stay with family but they are too far in the suburbs)

7 nights in Sirolo (Le Marche)

2 nights in Capua (visit the area and Reggio di Caserta... maybe maybe if I can squeeze it in go to Herculaneum)

1 night back in Rome, probably with family

For those interested in Caserta, here is an article on the palace. If you want to nerd out, it was used in Star Wars I and II which is why my son requested we visit.

The palace alone has 1,200 rooms, covers a total surface area of 60 acres and is more than three times bigger than Versailles. Include all the grounds—the sculpture park, the English Garden, the experimental silk factory, the colossal aqueduct—and the complex is roughly the size of Monaco.

1,200 rooms. 60 acres. Three times the size of Versailles. All things considered, the Palace of Caserta is roughly the size of Monaco.
