Pretty good.
February 23, 20214 yr Fall of Civilizations dropped a new episode on the Incas in January. It's a long one, 3 hours 20 minutes.
February 25, 20214 yr I have been enjoying the Leroy and Lewis podcast (link) but far and away my favorite "new" podcast of the last probably 6 months is Literally! with Rob Lowe (link) Leroy and Lewis just has interesting folks on it and I am a big fan of Evan Rob Lowe knows everyone, gives them shit, does some funny impressions, tells funny stories and generally does a bang up job with people we all know and love (McConaughey, Rogan, Lisa Kudrow, Chris Pratt was episode 1, Catherine O'Hara, Jon Lovitz, Nick Offermann) - really a highly recommended podcast
April 24, 20214 yr Cocaine and Rhinestones season 2 just started after like 3 years off. First episode is about pinball machines' effect on country music.

On that note - I stumbled across Dan's HH Addendum feed a couple weeks ago, there's some great conversations and footnotes to his other main-line podcasts. Chris Kyle....famous sniper, was one of his guys. That whole movie, all those SEALS were "his" guys. Won a Silver Star. Unlike most SEALS who's book start with "there I was, ankle deep in hand grenade pins"....his is 100% about leadership and discipline. He also has his own BJJ gym along with the famous BJJ champion Dean Lister. Jocko is a high level black belt himself. Dude's just intense. Gets up every morning @ 4;30 and absolutely crushes himself with a workout. As stated, his podcasts are all about military history and leadership principles. He talks very little about his own accolades fighting except in the context of leadership examples. They are hit & miss, but many are really neat as he likes to get the old guys in there from Korea and Vietnam. He is incredibly deferential to all of them and all service members in general. For YEARS now, rain or shine, he posts this pic every single morning without fail. No text. No explanation. The guys walks the walk like no other. I used to work with a woman that would talk about how she worked out every morning around 3 or 4am. She was in the office at 6, and left for the day at 3pm. She said she went to bed roughly at 7pm. I never understood why that was considered some ideal. I always thought her life schedule was undesirable. I guess you get the gym to yourself but for a few extra bucks you can always find less crowded gyms. This guy sounds like a bad ass but it's weird bragging about waking up early.

His mantra is discipline equals freedom. For him, he gets up and cranks out an insane workout. To him he "earns" a sunrise every morning. It can be anything, but it's the discipline....not "motivation" that will get you to where you want to be. Him simply posting a pic of his watch every AM is his way of holding himself accountable to the ideals he professes.

But I also assume he earns a living off of motivating others so that comes into play as well. If I had a friend that did this, or posted a pic of his lunch everyday, I would unfollow his posts. I wouldn't care.

Started speaking to leaders in the military, then trickled to corporate stuff. He's just applying his leadership principles from the teams to the private sector. His main point being as leaders, you have to hold yourself accountable before you can hold anyone else. It got people's attention because eating lunch every day isn't hard. Getting up at 430am for years and crushing insane workouts is. Dude's intense
June 16, 20214 yr WHAT THE FUCK DID APPLE DO TO THE APP?Seriously. Gonna have to use a new app. They “improved” it from mediocre to unusable. The new format abandons the play next queue functionality I was used to and populated it with episodes I skipped in the past. And swiping does not delete like it should. A play next queue should act like a playlist. Populate with new episodes and let me simply swipe to remove or drag to reorder.
June 16, 20214 yr I only use Apple Podcasts for one Patreon feed. Spotify is better in every measurable way.
February 3, 20223 yr The Serial Podcast group released a new 8 part series today on some Islamic extremist and school scandal in England. I haven't listened to it yet: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/podcasts/trojan-horse-affair.html
February 4, 20223 yr After listening to all 8 episodes, don't bother. They took 8 hours to say what they could've said in 10 minutes.

March 9, 20223 yr New Hardcore History just dropped, titled "Human Resources". Here's the description: The Atlantic Slave Trade mixes centuries of human bondage with violence, economics, commerce, geo-political competition, liberty, morality, injustice, revolution, tragedy and bloody reckonings. That sounds like a lot, yet this show merely scratches the surface of this enormous subject. I'm a little past halfway through it, it's horrific how recent that barbarity was in our history. Carlin's use of primary sources from people who were both behind and in front of the whip is really something else.
March 9, 20223 yr To answer the original question of what podcasts I'm listening to... Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend The Daily (NYT) Up First (NPR) The Lincoln Project Politicology (Lincoln Project spinoff) Smartless Politics War Room (James Carville) No Lie w/ Brian Tyler Cohen Surly Horns Dan Patrick Show (only listen to the segment that condenses 3 hrs into 45 minutes) CzabeCast (former national radio host who is a smartass like me) College Football Enquirer (Pat Forde, Dan Wetzel) Battery Power - Atl Braves (SB Nation) Charges with Rex Chapman (he must no longer be doing this...see below) The Rex Chapman Show w/ Josh Hopkins The Nateland (Nate Bargatze) Living in the 80s (80s pop culture) I play them all on 1.5 to 1.8 speed. It sounds weird to me now when I hear these people speak at normal cadence away from their podcasts.
March 9, 20223 yr Burt, have you checked out "Inside Conan", with Mike Sweeney and Jessie Gaskell? They discuss some of the behind the scenes stuff from the last 30 years with Conan. They recently had Kevin Dorff on talking about the Old Timey Baseball remote.

January 14, 20241 yr 5 part series on the life of John Brown. Edited January 14, 20241 yr by JohnnyRage
August 20Aug 20 Can anyone suggest a podcast app that is worth a shit? I'm not a huge podcast person and have generally used spotify as I am a subscriber, but that app just sucks for podcasts. It doesnt seem possible to create a playlist with several podcasts that will automatically queue up the latest episodes when released. There has to be a better interface than what Spotify offers up.
August 20Aug 20 I use BeyondPod. I'm not a huge fan, but it gets the job done. If someone has a better option, I'm all ears.
August 20Aug 20 Gonna put this here for future reference. One day after his playing career fizzles out Julian Sayin will have a podcast called "Just Sayin"
August 21Aug 21 The new Conflicted season is about the manhunt for Adolf Eichmann. Pretty, pretty good. Eichmann was basically the point man/fixer/logistics expert during The Holocaust. Pure evil.

I'd gladly pay a one-time fee, but fuck subscription models in the face.

I don't even use the free account. Just the app with whatever podcasts I want. I listen to podcasts almost exclusively when driving - probably 4 to 6 hours a week.
September 12Sep 12 Melvyn Bragg will no longer be hosting In Our Time. If you've never listened to an episode, give it a shot. It's a panel show with three different academics each week covering topics from math, history, science, literature, and everything in between.
October 30Oct 30 I need some recs for new podcasts to listen to while I run. I want something without commercials (or only a few each episode) because they're a pain to fast forward through while moving. I'm happy to pay for an ad-free version of the show if it's worth it. Also, I don't want anything about current news or sports, because I would like to go back into the archives and listen to older episodes and still have them be relevant. I prefer history or social sciences, but anything educational would be good. Comedy would also work. In Our Time was my perfect running podcast, but I've listened to nearly all of them, so now I'm seeking the help of the surly brain trust.

Been sick the past couple days and really got into “Not So Quiet on the Western Front.” I think that WWI gets short shrift in how much it shaped modernity because of the knockout younger sister. It’s very Brit focused but they do a great job. Standout episodes: U Boat series, Trench Slang, and Carrier Pigeons (really). Edit: Cavalry episode also really good, people weren’t stupid and it wasn’t just charges at machine gun nests. Edited October 30Oct 30 by 956 Worldwide

Now, to Google the Pelop... what he said.

November 1Nov 1 For WW2, this one started 3 months ago. I’ve enjoyed several of the episodes https://youtube.com/@bsowpod
November 9Nov 9 Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyck started a new podcast. Pretty funny so far. Probably need to be a Firefly fan to find it interesting.
