December 6, 20187 yr In any order aka I really really dug the girls this year. Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour Lucy Dacus - Historian Snail Mail - Lush Soccer Mommy - Clean Courtney Marie Andrews - May your kindness remain Brandy Carlile - By the way, I forgive you The Beths - Future Me Hates Me Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer Courtney Barnett - Tell me how you really feel cupcakKe - Ephorize One more - Low - Double Negative
December 6, 20187 yr Not sure about 10 but my clear faves from this year are: Jim James - Uniform Distortion Marie/Lepanto - Tenkiller Lucero - Among The Ghosts Brian Fallon - Sleepwalkers
December 6, 20187 yr Maybe my absolute favorite legacy ShaggyBevo annual post. This year was very strong for female musicians. I agreed w most of the above so far but for some reason Lush didn’t really grab me as much but only gave it a single spin. Maybe I need to revisit. I’ll post my list when I have some free time. Thanks for starting OP!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
December 6, 20187 yr Astroworld then everything else. But I'm not sure how many people here even listen to hip-hop.
December 6, 20187 yr Ghost - Prequelle is on my list for sure. I didn’t listen to as much music this year. I should fix that. It used to be that Spotify created a pretty good annual list for me, but Alexa + my kids have messed that all up.
December 7, 20187 yr (10) The Now Now - Gorillaz (9) Expectations - Wild Child (8) Scorpion - Drake (7) Be the Cowboy - Mikski (6) A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships - The 1975 (5) Good Thing - Leon Bridges (4) Lo Moon - Lo Moon (3) Honey - Robyn (2) Caer - Twin Shadow (1) Astroworld - Travis Scott Honorable mention for best song of the year when sung by the student section during a UT game: Mo Bamba - Sheck Wes
December 7, 20187 yr 1. Ghost- Prequelle: Probably their most mainstream accessible album, but it's still great. Strong 80's metal vibes...and a sax solo. Favorite Track: Faith https://youtu.be/hYpTINMyqcE 2. Spiritualized- And Nothing Hurt: A slow, mellow psych record that couldn't sound more like Spiritualized. The production is weird and the songs aren't perfect but i still love it. A fitting final album. Favorite Track: Here It Comes https://youtu.be/nuYKUWM_o60 3. Acid Dad- self titled: Garage-punk with excellent guitar work. One of the better acts I saw during sxsw this year. The album doesn't quite capture the live show but it's a very solid debut effort. Favorite Track: Marine https://youtu.be/Qttx84snC_I 4. Moondoggies- A Love Sleeps Deep: Their best album since their debut. Great Americana rock, the keys and pedal steel on this really shine in comparison to their older material. These guys are very underrated, one of the best shows I saw this year...and about 15 people there. Favorite Track: Cinders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCA_tKk0p80 5. All Them Witches- ATW: Slow burning blues psych, less exploratory noodling and more riffs than their last album. Favorite Track: Harvest Feast https://youtu.be/kIpl1rHdh4U 6. Buxton- Stay Out Late: Americana, more folk and less rock than the Moondoggies. They have a unique sound and good songwriting. Some of their songs have a haunting quality. Favorite Track: Bood Runs Blue https://youtu.be/-DcLugXnqJw 7. Still Corners- Slow Air: This falls into the "dream pop" category with atmospheric songs and soft vocals. There are more upbeat songs and guitar solos than what I would typically think of for the genre. I find it to be a very enjoyable, relaxing album. Favorite Track: The Message https://youtu.be/p50k_kklM7g 8. Wooden Shjips- V: I'm a sucker for their heavy droning psych sound. If you want to get stoned, sit on the couch and mindlessly listen to an album this is the perfect one. Favorite Track: Golden Flower https://youtu.be/QqlzORBNAcg 9. Donkeys- Sun Damaged Youth: A post apocalyptic concept album about surfers/skaters in California. Lots of surf guitar and organ, and some synth thrown in. Favorite Track: Kool Kids https://youtu.be/Kr6ZGN9lYaE 10. Dead Meadow- The Nothing They Need: They return to the stoner rock riffs that defined them. Their best effort in a while. Favorite Track: Here with the hawk https://youtu.be/Hr24tntCnTY
December 7, 20187 yr I didn’t know there was new ATW, I’ll have to check that out. Saw them a couple years ago and felt like I was seeing The Doors back in the day.
December 8, 20187 yr I don’t know most of the albums mentioned but that Brandi Carlile album kicks all kinds of ass. Holy shit can she sing.
December 8, 20187 yr Whenever I read these threads, I’m convinced most of the bands are simply made up.
December 8, 20187 yr 1 hour ago, HenryJames said: Whenever I read these threads, I’m convinced most of the bands are simply made up. What? That's ridiculous. Now if you'll excuse me I need to get back to the new General Zod's Pancakes.
December 13, 20187 yr not sure i have a top 10, but here is what i have most enjoyed this year: travis scott, astroworld courtney barnett, tell me how you really feel lord huron, vide noir the 1975, a brief inquiry into online relationships big red machine, big red machine the weeknd, my dear melancholy
December 14, 20187 yr Kind of a down year for me, compared to last year. Lucero "Among the Ghosts" American Aquarium "Things Change" Trampled By Turtles "Life is Good on the Open Road" Courtney Barnett "Tell Me How You Really Feel" Ruby Boots "Don't Talk About It" Brian Fallon "Sleepwalkers" Wheeler Walker Jr. "WWIII" John Prine "The Tree of Forgiveness" Brandi Carlisle "By the Way, I Forgive You" Michigan Rattlers "Evergreen" These are all pretty damn fine albums, but when I compare to 2017 it doesn't quite measure up. Edited December 14, 20187 yr by Al_4_ISU
December 14, 20187 yr Cody Jinks "Lifers" was solid, and almost made my list but I was honestly a little disappointed with it over time. I kinda thought he'd take a big step forward after "I'm Not the Devil". More of a side step, I guess.
December 14, 20187 yr If you are into electronic music and more eclectic hip hop, Fact has a solid year end list for you. https://www.factmag.com/2018/12/13/the-50-best-albums-of-2018/
December 14, 20187 yr In no particular order and I don't know that I'll make it to ten.... since a lot of good ones already listed, in particular Mitski, Big Red Machine, Leon Bridges, John Prine, Brandi Carlisle. Some others: Death Cab for Cutie Phosphorescent Jeff Tweedy Boygenius Christine and the Queens (some hits and misses) And do Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett just put out anything in any given year and make these lists regardless?
December 18, 20187 yr Wild Child - Expectations...Such a great album. Easily a half dozen quality singles without a bad track on it. Wild Child should be huge but they won't be. Curtis Roush - Cosmic Campfire Music...I didn't have high expectations for Curtis Roush's solo offering but it's a spacey yacht rock album that I love. Very easy listening. Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch...I still don't think I like Atticus Ross' influence on NIN that much but this album is brutal.Fuzz Club Records - The Reverb Conspiracy Volume Five...Compilations shouldn't be this good but this is a great psych album.Amigo the Devil - Everything is Fine...Evil fucking singer-songwriter tunes from the depths of hell.Erika Wennerstrom - Sweet Unknown...I love the Heartless Bastards and this album is pretty much in the same vein. The Sword - Used Future...They caught some shit for this album being "dad rock" but fuck it, it's awesome and grooves like a mother fucker.Dream Wife - Dream Wife...Feminist guitar driven rock. Good stuff. They will probably break big soon.Turbowolf - The Free Life...They were going to open for the cancelled Royal Blood show at Stubb's and ended up playing a free show indoors. I'm glad I stayed for it. Love this album. All Them Witches - ATW...It's been said above but ATW is the shit. So fucking awesome.
December 18, 20187 yr Quite skrong female LPs this year: Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour - an almost-perfect singer-songwriter album; gorgeously arranged, with a lyricism that catches you off-guard with a casual profundity; best of 2018 imo Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer - she's about as sure a bet of anyone on the pop fringes; every type of influence wielded at once deliberately and effortlessly cool Neko Case - Hell-On - similar to Janelle's genre-defying music, just with an alt-country tinge; wonderfully personal lyrics Robyn - Honey - doesn't have the immediately danceable bangers of Body Rock, but grooves just as hard on multiple listens Pusha-T - Daytona - maybe the most reliably earnest rapper today, with such diversity in his cadence; unlike most mumble-rap, you can cleanly glean ever word, with the most interesting sonic production Push has ever had on a record; THE leanest rap record I've ever heard at just 21 minutes Brandi Carlisle - By the Way, I Forgive You - she's really upgraded to a wall-of-sound arrangement; just a kick-ass record Spiritualized - And Nothing Hurt - like the waning moments floating through space on your way to the Great Beyond Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer - although the first half of 'Pure Comedy' was perfect; the second half lagged, as good as it was; this record feels fully realized and more accessible; Tillman can just crooooon, man U.S. Girls - In A Poem Unlimited - genre-shifting dance pop of the highest order; maybe this is the music ABBA would be making today? Travis Scott - Astroworld - a pretty impressive amalgam of our current pop culture moment HM's to Jeff Tweedy's solo effort, Mitski, DJ Koze, Arctic Monkeys, Lucero
December 30, 20186 yr I didn't listen to much this year, but here is my top ten: 1. Mitski - Be the Cowboy 2. Beach House - 7 3. Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy 4. Snail Mail - Lush 5. Parquet Courts - Wide Awake 6. Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs 7. Let's Eat Grandma - I'm All Ears 8. Vince Staples - FM! 9. Porches - The House 10. Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
December 30, 20186 yr In no particular order: Courtney Barnett- Tell Me How You Really Feel Caroline Rose- Loner Twin Shadow- Caer Black Panther OST Soccer Mommy- Clean Sunflower Bean- Twenty Two in Blue Kacey Musgraves- Golden Hour Leon Bridges- Good Things Amen Dunes- Freedom Saba- Care For Me I have Mitski, Father John Misty, and US Girls on the docket to listen to after the break. The ladies really brought it this year.
December 30, 20186 yr That Caroline Rose album is great. I was thinking it was 2017 or I would've snuck it on my list.
December 31, 20186 yr Really down year for me, having a hard time coming up with 10 1. Dirty Projectors | Lamp Lit Prose 2. Soccer Mommy | Clean 3. Decemberists | I'll Be Your Girl 4. January 12, 20196 yr Thanks guys I checked out of music about 5 -6 years ago. And I have yet to make my life easy with streaming services.
February 28, 20196 yr There weren't as many albums this year that I really loved like the past few years, but these were my faves, in no particular order: Courtney Barnett - Tell Me How You Really Feel Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer All Them Witches - ATW Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino Kurt Vile - Bottle It In Jeff Tweedy - WARM First Aid Kit - Ruins
March 1, 20196 yr Thanks guys I checked out of music about 5 -6 years ago. And I have yet to make my life easy with streaming services. This post makes me sad, because all of my life I could never consider music becoming less important to me, but as I’m easing into my late 40s I’m seeing it happen. I watched it happen with my dad too: when I was growing up he was always at the piano or plucking at a banjo or guitar, but I haven’t seen him pick up an instrument in decades. My car time is consumed by news and politics now and I should really change that. I have no idea what my favorite album of 2018 was.
March 1, 20196 yr Bro, replace that politics shit with music, stat! The current state of our politics is a soul eating circle jerk scourge that will accomplish nothing but taking years off your life. Three chords and the truth is what you need.
March 1, 20196 yr Thanks guys I checked out of music about 5 -6 years ago. And I have yet to make my life easy with streaming services.I have a Pandora station seeded with only Tom Petty American Girl. I just let it play. It wanders all over the place from vintage to brand new and everything in between. I don’t think it’s ever played anything I didn’t like. Learned lots of new artists and songs this way.
March 8, 20196 yr Bro, replace that politics shit with music, stat! The current state of our politics is a soul eating circle jerk scourge that will accomplish nothing but taking years off your life. Three chords and the truth is what you need. Good advice. I drove around listening to music today and pretty quickly remembered my favorite album of 2018: Ghost’s “Prequelle”. Awesome album.
March 8, 20196 yr EP III from Yumi Zouma is pretty damn good. It may be too "dream popy" for some, but they put out some good tunes.
March 18, 20196 yr I want to thank all of you for making this thread and taking the time to give thoughtful replies. I'm getting some good new to me music off of this, like I do most years on this and the old site. I appreciate you all taking the time to share. I like a wide variety of styles, and this thread seems to cover most of them. Thanks, ya'll.
