  • I don't know when this came out, it must have been recently, it's my daughter's band, she's the drummer (and sometimes she's on guitar/vocals).  They mine that realm of 90's grunge-punk like Hole, Nir

Some angry death metal with a bit of groove out of a young band from Denmark. This is going in the gym rotation. Debut album out today.

Yeah I've been digging it, I think I've seen him at least twice.  Still blows my mind he records every instrument/all production, everything himself.

I follow several up and coming bands that feature one or two members, but in those cases it's a vocalist and the other guy plays everything else. it's impressive as shit every time, especially when they're actually good at all of it. if you want to delve into something heavier and spacier, try Orbital Gate, Here's one of my faves from them:

Yeah awful news. Truly a tragic ending for that guy. I’ve seen Mastodon live more than any other band (9 times) and I always loved his style. It was disappointing to see him leave the band earlier this year, and then for him to go out like that is just terrible. RIP.

Just came to post this. Sucks. I only got to see them once but it was a hell of a show.

Greg Allman and Berry Oakley are probably offering him a peach and welcoming their Georgia brother to the great jam in the sky.

I just finished listening to every Iron Maiden studio album in chronological order. The last few were quite the slog.  I do this so you guys don't have to.

In other news, Coroner is awesome.

wow. that would be straight up torture for me. I have mad respect for IM and their influence on modern metal, but they're just not my bag. no clean singing in my metal world (well, very limited)

Did a youtube search for Born of Osiris and the first suggestion is a sponsored video for Taylor's Eras Tour.  Thanks youtube.

A few tidbits:

Anyone remember the late-80s/early 90s thrashers Gammacide from Arlington?  Apparently they're touring and are playing here (Atlanta) next month.  I'll definitely be one of the 12 old fuckers in the audience. I always thought they were way better than Rigor Mortis, who ended up getting a major label deal.

I've been trying to get into Immolation and having little success. I enjoy the first album and parts of the second, but I'm finding it hard to find anything to latch onto in most of their tunes. Well played and composed, but just lacking something. Any big fans?

I was a huge fan of Vio-lence when those first 2 records came out.  Now they're a joke, with just the vocalist remaining.  They're playing here in a few months as well. I caught them at Hell's Heroes a couple of years ago, when Phil Demmel was still in the band. When he left, that was it for me.

Saw Gammacide at hells heroes, they were solid. Check out acts of god for immolation, I'm a fan but they are totally in their own lane.

that's a good way to put it. it's all 1-offs for me, with Majesty and Decay probably my fave of theirs. AoG is pretty good too. Everything before Harnessing Ruin is kinda hard to listen to, for me

Also public service announcement, November 21st, Fugitive is playing Central Machine Works Brewing as part of their concert series.

Fuck yeah At the Gates.  The remnants of them became The Haunted, correct?

I'm going through the discography chronologically (like Maiden), and I'm leaning in that direction. However, I have always enjoyed the debut LP.  The 2007 releases, Hope & Horror and Shadows in the Light, made me pay attention.  None of the individual songs really stand out, but I dig the general vibe, and some of the leads are noticeably awesome.

That's the thing about Immolation: their bangers are just that. You just have to find them

Just discovered High Desert Queen, really digging it. ATX based, I figured someone on here would have mentioned them but didn't find anything

My son swears by the Big Ass Truck EP. We're headed to Blackbraid tonight.

you have a cool-ass son. yeah, I've been getting into more bands like them lately. they're sort of a cross between thrash and hardcore with rappy elements. I dig it, not my main bag, but definitely a nice style to feather into a long playlist

New Netflix movie reminded me and then I went back and busted out the dvd I bought when I was in college. Don’t judge me. This album rocked.

well that didn’t work. Here’s the full album on YouTube. Song starts at 45 min exactly. Nothing to Gein.

Blackbraid concert was sick. Opener Lamp of Murmuur was actually surprisingly good with lots of energy and riffage, and they were cool as hell after the show. But BB totally brought the house down. The way they weave in the Native American stuff is so cool and seems genuine, not really a schtick. But mostly it's the intensity -- just nonstop brutality and energy. Plus it was very cool to be up against the stage with my son just full-on raging. You can see him halfway through this video, although he's nothing more than just a mass of flailing hair. Badass.

Also the dudes in BB were very cool. They gave me a drumstick and the setlist after the show, shook hands all around. During the show one of the guitarists leaned over to press his forehead against mine and screamed in my face while wailing away on his solo. At one point the singer jumped into the crowd between my son and I and just started moshing it up with us and the sold-out crowd. It was loud, sweaty, the smell of beer / weed / sweat in the air, bodies being thrown, feeling the amps reverberating in my feet and chest, fists and horns flying, dude setting something on fire on the stage -- what more do you want from a fucking metal show??

Hooded Menace - just listened to all their stuff from beginning to end. Tritonus Bell remains my favorite.

Mudvayne? C'mon, man.... 😉

Another banger, love the Duran Duran cover too.

What I really need is for some smart fucking metal band to do a cover of "The Chauffeur." I mean, if you're gonna do a metal cover of a Duran Duran song, do something legitimately creepy. "Friends of Mine" would also work, but if you're gonna do Duran Duran, do the song all Duranies know is their actual best song.

In other news, Testament's new album is out today, and while they will forever be in my mind "what Metallica would be if they never expanded beyond thrash" they, like Judas Priest, only seem to get better with age.

They keep putting out good shit, imo.  Almost 30 years in.

Agreed. Testament just keeps getting better and better.

there is a 90's band from memphis called big ass truck. their guitarist is now a member of the hold steady. can't believe there are 2 bands who chose to be called big ass truck.

It's much more fun to see that happen with bands than it is to watch them ...

1. Break up, produce nothing new, reunify 25 years later for a nostalgia cash-grab tour (eg Van Halen)

2. Vegas residency (eg Van Halen)

3. Release new albums with mediocre half-assed stylistic copies of their old stuff (eg Van Halen)

I'm as big a VH guy as there is, and you are dead on. Their late late era retreads were so painful.

Same. Being a VH fan has sucked for the past... oh, 40 years or so.

We're, like, the Mariners fans of rock and roll

oh and the new Arch Enemy is their usual high standard, maybe a bit better than their last effort?

new lead singer is still a dickhead tho

(probably still would anyway)

tl;dr, apparently things were all smoothed over, but there was some really asshole behavior from both Gossow and White-Gluz.

Just read that photographer's account of the situation. He's technically right, but he also sounds like kind of an asshole.

Back on track, I've only heard a couple of the new AE songs but thought they were both a little lackluster.
