Penny "Laverne" Marshall Died -- Actress and groundbreaking Director

Featured Replies

Damn.  Gonna have to drink a beer while wearing a glove tonoght, in her honor.

Damn...RIP Penny. Looking back at some of those old shows that I watched as a kid, I’m amazed at how easily entertained we were.

Lenny and Squiggy will be heartbroken.

RIP Penny. She was legit OG.

An incredible loss, she was one of the greats.  Especially as a director, she often brought a different touch as compared to the usual Hollywood formula.  I thought The Preacher's Wife was outstanding in that regard.

Beer? Don't you mean milk and Pepsi?

RIP Laverne.

I’ll poor out some milk and Pepsi in her memory.

Too slow.

I never knew at the time that Lenny was the best actor in that cast.

Coincidentally, I happened to catch an old rerun of Murphy Brown last night that had Michael McKean as a guest star. He killed. I was in tears. He played an aging lounge singer that Murphy had a crush on in high school. A highlight was him singing "Me and Murphy Brown" to the tune of Me and Mrs. Jones.

He'll always be David St. Hubbins to me.

RIP. Definitely a simpler time. So many great show like L&S and Happy Days.

Sister of Garry Marshall, another giant... developed Happy Days and all those spinoffs (Mork, Laverne/Shirley, etc.).  Terrific actor, producer, writer (writing credits among some of the best shows on TV ever).  They were close and a helluva team.  Garry died 2 years ago.  RIP both...

A great movie but so was A League of Their Own.  RIP Penny.

Myrna Turner. Best secretary Oscar Madison ever had.

AOTL is one of the top sports movies, always a channel surfing stop whenever on.

Just watched it this past weekend. Damn solid baseball flick and oh so damn quotable

I think it’s better than The Natural, Field of Dreams and most certainly Major League.

That's how I always heard it

Ok stop right there. Field of Dreams is legendary.

I'll give you one out of four:
1) Major League
2) The Natural
3) ALOTO
4) Field of Dreams

In no particular order, well, maybe The Bad News Bears @ #1.

The Bad News Bears

Bull Durham

A League of their Own

The Rookie

When one of your other three options was PBS...

I think it’s better than The Natural, Field of Dreams and most certainly Major League.

Agreed, and I love all three of those.

Love me some A League of Their Own.  It's hilarious and is there a more famous baseball move line the, "There's not crying in baseball!"?

Not sure it beats The Natural, Field of Dreams (which is as much a family movie), or Bull Durham, but aren't those the big 5 in Modern Times right there, along with Major League?  There are some other good baseball movies like Eight Men Out or Moneyball or The Sandlot, but League is definitely right there in the discussion as a top tier baseball movie of all-time.

Awakenings is a underrated Penny movie as well.  I never understood why she wasn't more prolific in her directing career.  Maybe it was the institutional sexism in the industry at the time but she obviously had the chops for it.  She pretty much quits after a Preacher's Wife.... doing only one more film.  Never made much sense.  I

I think we can all agree ALOTO is a great baseball movie and the GOAT of AAGPBL movies.

This has zero to do with penny Marshall RIP, but it seems many of you have never seen Bang the Drum Slowly.

I hope her soul passes "near Mexico" on its way to eternal peace.  Need us more like Penny in this ole verldt.

You made me laugh, Penny.  Thank you.  RIP

That's how I feel.  Simple but imo it's quite a legacy.
