Robots gonna kill us all... 29 dead in Japan from killer robots

Featured Replies

I'm extremely doubtful.

Guerilla marketing campaign for the new Robocop movie.

That lady is kooky. She reports about things that other people claim, like with Roswell.

Amid blowback from civil rights groups, the San Francisco Police Department has offered more details on a draft policy that would allow police robots to use lethal force against suspects as a last-resort option.

A similar policy proposal was defeated in Oakland, where police sought to outfit certain robots with live shotgun rounds. In a statement to SFGATE, the SFPD clarified that it would not seek to arm any of its robots with firearms but rather with explosives as an "intermediate force option" that could prove to be lethal.

That sounds like a terrible idea.  Seriously, who would think otherwise?

Wasn’t an explosive device on a robot used to kill the Dallas cop killer a few years ago? IIRC, they cornered him in a parking garage and “eliminated” him using a “robot”.

Correct.  It was a remote controlled "robot" or vehicle with an explosive device that was driven up to the guy and detonated.  The guy had shot 5 officers and was sniping at others.  As it was not autonomous but remote control...I'll allow it.

Sounds like a derivative of the kamikaze drones.  If someone is barricaded in with no way to engage without casualties (body armor, gas masks, etc.), they roll in Wall-E strapped down with shaped charge.  Boom.

Killer robots in SF are put on hold for now.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco supervisors voted Tuesday to put the brakes on a controversial policy that would have let police use robots for deadly force, reversing course just days after their approval of the plan generated fierce pushback and warnings about the militarization and automation of policing.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to explicitly ban the use of robots in such a fashion for now. But they sent the issue back to a committee for further discussion and could vote in the future to let police use robots in a lethal manner in limited cases.

A robot only that wasn’t able to achieve 1 of the 3 robot laws would still be better than about 95% of the police force. Arm them and roll them out.

Man crushed to death by robot in South Korea

A man has been crushed to death by a robot in South Korea after it failed to differentiate him from the boxes of food it was handling, reports say.

The incident occurred when the man, a robotics company employee in his 40s, was inspecting the robot.

The robotic arm, confusing the man for a box of vegetables, grabbed him and pushed his body against the conveyer belt, crushing his face and chest, South Korean news agency Yonhap said.

He was sent to hospital but later died.

According to Yonhap, the robot was responsible for lifting boxes of peppers and transferring them onto pallets.

The man had been checking the robot's sensor operations ahead of its test run at the pepper sorting plant in South Gyeongsang province, scheduled for 8 November, the agency adds, quoting police.

The test had been originally been planned for 6 November, but was pushed back by two days due to problems with the robot's sensor.

The man, a worker from the company that manufactured the robotic arm, was running checks on the machine late into the night on Wednesday when it malfunctioned.

Is that the Electric Grandmother herself in that sketch? I don't think I ever picked up on that before, but it adds a nice layer.

EDIT TO ADD: I think I'm wrong and confusing actresses who were old forty years ago.
