August 7, 20241 yr So now the legal justification. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s top prosecutor on Monday announced a criminal investigation against the opposition’s presidential candidate Edmundo González and its leader Maria Corina Machado over their call on the armed forces to abandon their support for President Nicolás Maduro and to stop repressing demonstrators. Attorney General Tarek William Saab’s statement tied the investigation directly to a written appeal the two members of the opposition sent hours earlier about Maduro and the demonstrators who have come out in force to defend their votes in the July 28 election. Saab, in a written announcement posted on the social media site X, said the duo “falsely announced a winner of the presidential election other than the one proclaimed by the National Electoral Council, the only body qualified to do so” and they openly incited “police and military officials to disobey the laws.” https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-election-armed-forces-maduro-gonzalez-763defac84e8234ff36e0dc6182efdf7

August 7, 20241 yr I would go with Hanson but that is cruel and unusual punishment. Going in would not accomplish much at all. Remove a shithead and his cronies, who would somehow get out first and go into exile. They are not hated like Saddam. They could get away. Caracas would become the next Port Au Prince. @Braff Zacklin How did the people fail? They went out and voted. It is up to them to finish it. But most will leave. Don't expect and Arab spring or uprising like Iraq to happen. Latin Americans don't really like martyrdom. You cannot brag in the bar or watch baseball (in Venezuela's case) if you are dead.

August 11, 20241 yr Yeah, talk is cheap, slogans even cheaper. Did see a headline on WSJ (behind paywall) suggesting the US is talking to Maduro about not prosecuting him if he goes into exile. That is what I have expected will happen. Then shit gets real and watch all the factions go for the upper hand.

August 11, 20241 yr As long as Maduro maintains support/control of the Venezuelan military, I don’t see why he would leave power.

If things go south for Maduro, and these things always go slow until they don't, then he might not get out alive, or at best ends up like Pinochet, under house arrest (and then let out two weeks before dying of ill health). Maduro most likely has plenty of money stashed abroad, and the US maybe counting on him wanting to live out his life in a nicely-furnished Miami condo, instead of constantly looking over his shoulder and wondering which guard or military officer is going to kill him.
August 12, 20241 yr Nope. Not the US. Part of the deal would be release his assets. Well we would tell him we would. He would go to Sochi. Do the Russian TV circuit. His options are Havana (which I would pick), Nicaragua (Lake shark might eat you), Iran (No rum and Baseball), Norks (Nah, even he would not like their dancing) or Russia. Putin gives him some wife of a dead General and eventually he falls out of a window. His kids would be allowed to travel, etc. They could end up in the Spring Semester at UM or pick to go into exile in a place like the DR. Lot of Latin American exile kids end up there. Both Torijjos's granddaughter and Noriega's daughter lived there and were besties. They had multiple year, multiple US visas and Noriega's kid had a nice apartment in the Grove. Damn those were some fun days. (sorry, no pics, pre-smart phone.) Latin American dictators don't get the Mussolini treatment. They go into exile.

August 13, 20241 yr Again, it really will depend on 1 group. The young officers. They have the weapons, the troops, and as long as the same colonels and generals remain there is no upward movement. Plus, they don't make a lot. Their families bitch about the economy, etc and they listen. And then they hear the troops. The figure head might be a Colonel, but he will have the support of younger officers. Will he leave? I think so, but the conditions are not there yet. And these marches mean shit to him. He will send in the collectivos backed by anti-riot police advised by Cubans to mess up any momentum. Arrest enough to send a message, disrupt the opposition, but not enough to 1- end it, 2- overburden his prison system, and 3- create enough anger leading to a popular rebellion. Don't see him getting killed. I see exile in his future.

August 15, 20241 yr Lula chiming in. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Thursday morning that he still doesn’t recognize Nicolás Maduro as the winner of last month’s presidential election in Venezuela, and that his counterpart could call for a new vote “if he has good sense.” “Maduro still has six months left in his term. He is the president regardless of the election. If he has good sense, he could call upon the people of Venezuela, perhaps even call for new elections, create an electoral committee and allow observers from around the world to monitor,” Lula said in an interview with Radio T. He also said that Maduro still owes an explanation to Brazilians and the rest of the world. https://apnews.com/article/brazil-lula-venezuela-election-maduro-1c3afbf01f4c85e7903c2fc3d7fdbf38
