No wonder we haven't heard anything from Rick Moranis in a while.

This hits close to home. I drank cold delicious Bernard beer at Bohemian Beer Garden about a half mile from there not too long ago.

Was the light accompanied by a voice saying "Attention K-Mart shoppers!"?

That is some god damn freaky shit.

Any official explanation yet? How big was this fucking transformer?

The cause: Mayor Bill de Blasio said the light was caused by an “electrical surge” at a Con Ed substation in Astoria, at the northern tip of Queens.

A Con Edison spokesman, Bob McGee, said early this morning: “What people were seeing was an electric arc flash. The electrical arc of that magnitude is similar to a thunder and lightning event.” The sound people heard was “the arc striking the ground.”

Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

That had to have happened on one of their transformers going to distribution. It will be interesting to hear if they had been doing maintenance or if it was just online and happened randomly.

We’ve had contractors doing electrical work and they leave grounding balls on or their damn tools inside the gear. It makes a lot of noise but nothing like the videos from this event.

Copper expands 40,000 to one when it changes phases to a gas, which is what happens in an arc flash. Still, that's a lot of copper and not like any arc flash I've ever seen.

Interesting timing. I was listening to Coast-to-Coast AM the other night and I just assumed it was the usual kook calling in to tell about a time back in '78 or so that he was near Raleigh/Durham one night and the sky lit up bright blue. The caller said he never heard anything about it and that there were stories of UFOs being reported that night. Reading this and seeing that vid makes me think there was probably a power station in the area then that had something happen real similar to this event.

Big enough to shut down Mos Eisley spac...errr...La Guardia due to complete power loss.

Having a tough time believing the video above was enough to illuminate the entire skyline like in the other videos.

Maybe it’s the other way around, homey.

Low or very heavy cloud cover could account for it ....maybe...... maaaaaaaybe...

Not sure if serious

When this thing hits 88 miles per hour.....you're gonna see some serious shit.

Having seen the little pole-mounted transformers blow during thunderstorms, I immediately recognized the light in the video as that... but that one in the video was orders of magnitude bigger and longer. Pretty awesome display

That's juuuuuuust what they want you to think.....

Just now, Parliament said:

Don't those things have fuses?  Seem not.

Transformers are kinda like a fuse.

Kinda late for a blue Christmas.

Just a few VW engine blocks.
