In other news, HEB-Volente had no Celis White today.  They had plenty of the IPA and Lime though...

St Elmo isn’t that close to live oak. But if you are going to st Elmo go to skull mechanix. Southern heights and might as well do oddwood.

Been to Oddwood and really liked it. Might get a couple growlers from there for the lake this weekend.

They had also had some cans to go when I was there on Saturday.

Zilker's Coffee Milk Stout is delicious and way better than anything from ABW.

imo

I'd take Sputnik but it's not available full time, obviously.  The Zilker Friends With Benefits was awesome this year and I wish I would have bought out my HEB when they had it.

I like Sputnik and its various other versions.  It's probably the only ABW beer I really like.  But I like Zilker's Coffee Milk Stout substantially more.

I’ve enjoyed many of their Blood Orange IPA.

Fine for Lower Redneckia, but certainly makes me appreciate the attention to a good quality pilsner back home.92ce20abab72d978c2ea136ef353151b.jpg

Al_4_isu you’re probably the only one that can help me with Iowa recs. I’ll be in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City then Manchester areas. Is there anything there worth checking out or looking for?

Absolutely.

Franklin Street in Manchester is an excellent brewery. Waaay better than you would expect for, well, Manchester.

Cedar Rapids has a solid beer scene. Lion Bridge and Iowa Brewing Co are the tops there, IMO. The owner of Toppling Goliath once told me he thought they were the best in the state at brewing to style. They make some of the best everyday porters and English milds I’ve had. They’ve upped their IPA game recently and are crushing those. Pretty good food, and Czech Town is a cool area. Iowa Brewing is across the river, and just does everything well. I don’t know that they’re quite as good as Lion Bridge, but worth a stop.

In Iowa City, it starts and ends with Big Grove. Backpocket is decent, especially if you’re close by, but nothing quite stands up to Big Grove. IC has a surprisingly poor beer scene given its size, tradition of being the hip college town, and Iowa punching above its weight with beer in general. But Big Grove rocks. Huge taproom with live music, excellent food, and a wide variety of really good beer. Sours, IPAs, big stouts. Really nice outdoor space.

Enjoy your trip. You’re getting a solid slice of eastern Iowa. Let me know if you want any food recs.
Isn't Toppling Goliath around there?

Decorah is at least 2.5 hours from Cedar Rapids.

TG beer will be widely available in cans to take home, but it wouldn’t make for a convenient visit. Besides, if you’re going to Decorah, go to Pulpit Rock.

Its a really good beer, and I like that every batch is very different from the last. Also grab a Ft George 3 Way if you see it.

Yea, out on that. Lots of clashing ideas there.

How does it compare to the rest of the Turning Point TIPA stable?

I do believe this is my first one from them.

I missed out on Azor Ahai, A Nu Start, Johnny Karate, Burt Macklin, Trifecta, etc. I think I have only been patronizing them since Johnny Karate and Azor Ahai, though.

It’s goddamn good, though. Juicy af for 10.5%.

"Triple dry hopped triple IPA" ???

Come on, man.  Someone is just screwing with me personally now, right?

Little Italy. Italian Pilsner. I don’t know what makes it that, but this is fucking delicious.

Think it just means a dry hopped Pilsner. A few breweries in Austin have their version

It was really light as well. Pulpit’s regular pils is about 6%, and this was 3.8%. Really dry, a little hoppy, and just awesome.

What makes an Italian pilsner?  They roast the malts using cigarette smoke.

Breweries just making shit up at this point.

I think it’s this. Progress, I suppose.
Breweries just making shit up at this point.

At this point?

no kidding.  I'm pretty sure every beer trend started as a fuck up.

aw shit, this batch is infected  -> call it a sour.

aww shit we forgot to filter out all this yeast and trub and shit -> call it a hazy ipa

aww shit, we fucked up the mash this one fermented too dry  -> call it a brut

aww shit, we fucked up our efficiency this one watery -> drp hop it, call it a session ipa

occams razor and all.

Amen.

Heard they're going to file for bankruptcy and reorganize, and they've got someone else willing to pay more money to keep them afloat.

If true, that is a real sucker investor, but as long as I still get me some Celis, then I'll allow it.

It’s less syrupy than most tripels, and they fucking hide the alcohol well.

Yes... yes, they do.  The first truly dangerous beer I ever encountered.

I love it so.

Their fuckin branding draws my attention every time in the store.  This is a pretty damn good lager.  I just crushed 3 after mowing the lawn.  America!

I do like those graphics.  Might look even better with some bacon and some Ron Swanson mixed in:

Busch Light can in the background, nice. :)

Iowa Water.

On a day like yesterday, where the plan was to drink beer all day and not get creamed, mixing in some light trash works well.

Drank a few too many of these yesterday. Delicious and crushable though.
