June 22Jun 22 I crashed for the second time in a year. Luckily, my bike and I came out of it in relatively good shape. I was carrying some momentum coming off a hill, probably going 20-22 mph in Terry Hershey, and a fat ass rabbit ran right out in front of me. I didn’t even have time to hit the brakes before I was de-biked. My helmet is trash and I got some road rash but all else is fine. Addendum: We all know this but you really have to wear a helmet. My head hit the ground pretty hard and I would not be in good shape if the dents in my helmet were instead in my head.

The helmet company will most likely give you another helmet for free or discounted if it is cracked fyi. Glad you are safe.

June 25Jun 25 I’m in between races right now and not ready to start a prep. I’ve subbed all my swimming for weights, kept up 2 or 3 bikes per week and at least two runs per week (longer one on the weekends). It’s just so damn hot and humid outside. I hate the summer.

July 22Jul 22 Finally got into a non surgical specialist and I have a hip impingement and after one session it already feels better. It was to the point I could barely swing my leg walking but running was ok even the though my leg was feeling weak. Doing a strength test he could push my leg down with very little pressure. It was almost comical. I’ve missed too much time to do the full this year and after 5 years of triathlons it is nice not having something to worry about for awhile. I will start back very serious in January to do both the full and the half and I am going to stick with strength training for awhile.

July 28Jul 28 40 mile ride + 4 mile run yesterday 11 mile run today. First brick since Florida yesterday was solid. I signed up for a short sprint tri here in Tyler second weekend of September. This was my first tri a few years ago. I bet I’ll do better this time.
July 31Jul 31 US Track & Field Championships Will be covered on Peacock Sat & Sun. Anyone have a stream for Thursday & Friday action? Thanks
August 1Aug 1 I have tendinosis in my left hip. Getting PRP/stem cell injections next week and should be good as new.
August 31Aug 31 Short sprint tri in a week. Been out the last week due to a beginning of the school year cold that my son blessed me with. Knocked it out and I’m back. 50 mile ride today with a 9 mile run. I’m 5 weeks out from Waco. I want to take a break from heavy training for a month or so. I think I may do cowtown marathon in late February. We’ll see.
September 2Sep 2 I get my second injection tomorrow. Still been riding a lot and walking. Doing a lot of strength training. I've managed to stay at 184 pounds.
September 10Sep 10 Improved 14 minutes from 2 years ago. 3 minutes faster in swim, shaved 2 minutes off in t1, 7 minutes off the bike and ran a 23 minute 5k. Went from 12th in my division to 4th this year. 1:20:xx this year vs 1:35:00 2 years ago. Great race. 650m swim, 14 mile bike, 5k run.
September 29Sep 29 Finally released to run last week and did 5 today. Going down to the Ironman event yesterday was bitter sweet but it made me realize I have one more full in me.
October 3Oct 3 Race weekend for me. Heading out to Waco today. Few friends did IM Maryland two weeks ago and did great.
October 21Oct 21 Ran a 10K a couple of weeks ago for my first race since 2013. I've got the bug again. And always run behind the girl with the great ass.

November 6Nov 6 So I’m at a bit of a crossroads and could use some help. As posted somewhere upthread, I had a bad ankle sprain Feb 1, still ran the Cowtown full marathon Feb 23, but then had lingering ankle issues until about June. That’s over and my ankle has thankfully felt good the last few months, allowing me to get fully back into things. I feel healthier and I’m running better and faster than I ever can remember so I’m very happy about that, but I have an itch to scratch.I decided to run the Houston Marathon on Jan 11 and set my own training plan, loosely based on the Hal Higdon intermediate plans I’ve used in the past. I’m doing 25-26 miles per week, LR last week was 15 miles at a 7:58 pace with no aches, negative splits, and feeling like I easily had gas in the tank without overdoing things. Minor but critically important detail is that I didn’t register for Houston because I wanted to be sure I was okay, but now I went to register and it’s completely full. Well shit, but I mainly wanted it due to its reputation for being easy, and there are plenty of other marathons out there. So I’m thinking Cowtown again on March 1. It’s my hometown race and I know the course, so it’s an easy switch to make. It’s 7 weeks later so that’s a blessing I guess, but my plan was targeting Jan 11 and now I don’t know what to do with myself. Do I ease up a bit and give myself a month of 11-15 mile LRs before starting to ramp up again? Then I thought, maybe I should get the help of an online service. Running has always been a personal zen activity that I like doing independently, and my schedule is erratic, so enlisting a live coach is a no-go right now. Maybe I never want a live coach because it feels intrusive to an activity I view as solely mine. But perhaps an app or virtual coach could be useful? I’ve used the Runkeeper app for 10+ years and like that it’s simple and has no social media involvement. I checked out their premium training features and they will build a plan but it’s just a default plan that doesn’t allow much customization. Basically a different version of Hal Higdon, which is not super useful. Then I found Runna. The app looks sleek and seems to have good features, so I signed up, put in my data, and let it create a plan. Problem is, their plan shows that I have 17 weeks to train and basically starts me from scratch with a LR of 5 miles this week. There doesn’t seem to be any way to input my current mileage and have them start me off a little stronger. This feels like a massive step backwards and a waste of my current progress. I sent them a support message to see if they can adjust my plan at all. Waiting to hear back.Where do I go from here?TLDR:1. Already halfway through marathon training block with good progress2. Switched races and now have 7 extra weeks 3. How do I adjust plan in a way that hopefully uses those 7 weeks to improve performance without overtraining and risking injury?4. Is there an app or service that could make a training plan based off my specific situation, or should I continue to go at it alone?
November 6Nov 6 Ok, sorry for the long post but I mostly answered my own questions. Runna has a section where I can update current weekly mileage and my current long runs, which then re-creates my entire training plan in a way that suits me. It wasn’t part of the initial setup, not sure why, but it looks good now.
November 13Nov 13 Somewhat back to normal with the hip. It still hurts to walk sometimes but not run however a few weeks ago I noticed when I did dead lifts it always felt better after so now I am doing more leg strength exercises which is making me faster on the bike. If things progress like I think I am definitely doing the 70.3 and full in Chattanooga. I’m getting faster on the bike as well. Still not trying to run fast so I will shoot for an 8:20 pace for 8 miles tomorrow which should have me close to zone 2 anyways.
