I have to go out of town next Friday-Wednesday for a work conference in Gulf Shores Alabama and if it wasn’t for that I was going to go a few days later and cheer on Pearlandhorn. It dawned on me last night how ridiculous all of this training can be when I spent 30 minutes online verifying the resort has 2 Pelotons so I can train while I am down there as it’s my biggest week of training before the race.

I’m closing on my house purchase Friday and leaving 10 days later to go to Florida. My bike has been set up in my in-laws spare storage room for the past 3 months. I’m so excited to have my own house I could scream.

45 today and I pulled the group the whole time on the ride. Tomorrow I am doing a funky triathlon where I work out in that it is 2,000 meter row, 300 body weight exercises ( pushups, burpees, bench hops and step ups) then a 5k then I will run 7 more miles after.

Did a nice little ride over the weekend. Felt like John Denver…country roads…take me home…

Average speed is a bit off due to having to turn around multiple times, stop for cars, etc.

You will be very close to averaging 20 for race day.

Did a 23 mile spin and ran 4. I am at 30 miles for the week and running 10 in the morning before I leave for Birmingham and then Gulf Shores. Legs are extremely tired and 5 am will be here early but this is what I signed up for.

We’re officially moving in to the new house Monday. Leaving for Florida Wednesday. I’m swimming this morning and riding tomorrow. I’ll do a 7 or 8 mile run Sunday.

I raw dogged 10 miles on the treadmill at a comfortable pace with tired legs. I could hardly walk when I started.

Done. The bread is in the oven.

Packing the RV tonight and heading out tomorrow. Spending the night in Monroe, LA or Jackson, MS tomorrow night. PCB on Thursday. Chill and ocean swim Friday. Race Saturday.

Good luck?

Do you have target paces for bike and run?  (Swim wouldn't mean anything to me).

And did you do a full 58/13 brick before?  If not, how close?

Thanks!

Target pace on the bike is close to 20/21 mph. Running pace would be great to be about 8:45 per mile average. Im wanting to be done with the swim in 45 minutes which I think is doable. I’m really hoping to get a sub 6 hour total. That’s my main goal. Secondary goal is 6:15 which is still faster than Waco. If I don’t get sub 6, I’m 100% doing Waco again in October. I’m probably already doing it but haven’t signed up for it yet.

No, I didn’t do the full event brick in training. I did around 58 miles on the bike and a 9 mile run twice. One was pretty tough and the other was great. I did do a lot more brick work this training cycle than last time. Hoping it pays off.

Going to be a wet race. The rain is going to make you think you aren’t sweating but you are. Drink more than you think we should. Don’t forget Ironman is an eating competition first.

My son went with me to registration and they made him wait outside the check in area. I told him to wait for me and 2 minutes later, a volunteer came up to me and asked if he was my son and pointed. I said yes and she motioned for him to come to the t-shirt table and gave him an Ironman race t-shirt. The look on his face was priceless. I missed out on the shirts in Waco last year that had the names of the participants on it so I grabbed one of those. Fucking $60. Absolutely ridiculous.

We got all checked in, RV parked, checked out the beach and went and ate. I’m going to go for a swim tomorrow after bike drop off then putting my feet up the rest of the day.

I got in and swam on the opposite side of the course and went upstream and back. I was about to die going upstream and had a mild panic attack but settled in. Look at those dogshit splits going up. Still wasn’t flying heading back but I was tired and it was choppy.

Had a couple nice swims this morning and afternoon broken up by the athlete briefing. Ton of first timers here in Florida. 5% chance it doesn’t rain tomorrow because it’s Florida.

In the RV now watching minions with the kiddo and drinking water. Transition bag ready. Bike dropped off. Transition opens at 4:30, gun goes off at 5:40. I’ll self seed with the 45-50 minute folks and probably get in the water at 6:20 or so.

lol. I start my bike ride around that time and will probably do 50 and then run 6 but I will be following you. You will have a fast swim.

Coffee going off at 3:45. I’ll be in transition at 5 to get my bike set up and bottles filled. Heading to bed here in a bit. Have a good ride!

Haven’t raced n a year. Was hoping to race in 25. MRI today showed My vertebra at my L5 disc has shifted out of alignment. My L4-L5 disc bulge is  8mm which is Pressing on my nerves both sides which is why my legs are numb to touch.  My L5-s1 disc is 6mm and torn on the back right side which is why my right leg is dead numb the bottom of the report says “ significant abnormalities, Attention needed!    So I guess I’m not racing this year either. I can’t walk or tie my shoes without absolute pain.  So I’m living vicariously through you all until I can get to running. If I can run again lol

That’s rough. Wishing you the best.

Pearlandhorn will not be swimming today. When my swim was canceled I knew 1 day early and had time to get over it.

Well that fucking sucks. Makes me feel whiny about carrying around a bad knee.

I’m heading out to do 60 on the bike. I’ll be thinking about you when I’m done and realize there’s no way my legs could handle jumping right into a HM.

Pearlandhorn is off the bike and is faster than last year. He slowed down a little towards the end. Let’s see how these run splits go as he might have cooked himself on the bike.

It just dawned on me that the weather might have made him slow down but he is still faster than last year.

He did good. Faster on the bike and run and finished in 4:58 so he would have come in at just under 6 hours which was the goal if the swim happened.

Bingo. Riding into a tropical storm with gusts right in my face was absolutely killer. The last 10 miles I was at a 16 mph average. Absolutely brutal. I was cruising heading out.

I also forgot my bike candy and had to improv with multiple stops at aid stations.

Overall I’m happy with how I did. I didn’t find out the swim was canceled until I got to transition this morning as my wife had my phone. I was so damn disappointed. It started absolutely pouring on us while we were waiting for the bike start. After 5 miles on the bike, it didn’t rain for about an hour an a half. I was completely dry then it started raining off and on until I got off the bike. Didn’t rain at all during my run. Saw some pretty bad crashes and one guy pass out on the run.

Still did better this race than Waco in both biking and running.

Hey, I did some hard shit today!

They just canceled the race. That’s absolutely killer for all those people still out there trying to finish.

That’s brutal and I didn’t even know that was a possibility. Hopefully they give a small discount to those for another race this year.

I feel like we’ve become friends over the last year pm’ing about questions and talking on here. I knew the swim cancelling the day of would get you down but you finished. I am happy for you and saw a lot of improvement from your 1st to your 2nd.

I am planning on being done with Chattanooga after this year but if you come up next year I would change my mind.

And Basil, just sign up. You know you want to.
Thanks for following and being interested. Much appreciated.

I’m going to sign up. So I can play with the cool kids.

Congrats - muscling into the wind at 16 mph for 10 miles sounds terrible. Must have been fun.

I was questioning my life choices when I hit mile 50 😂

I went from top 3rd in my age bracket and top 25% in gender and overall to bottom 50% in all three categories. IM gave everyone who crossed the finish line after 12:15 a DNF.

That doesn’t make any sense to me

Think he’s saying with a bunch of slower folks DNF’d, he’s lower among the finishers. Just a false data point.

Correct. They sent a cancelation notice at 1:15 PM saying they were canceling the remainder of the race due to weather. They had put on a “pause” at 12:15 PM. They retroactively canceled it to 12:15 PM so anyone who crossed the finish line after 12:15 got a DNF and weren’t included in the race stats.

It’s race week so of course the whole house is extremely sick. I just woke up to puke and shit non stop. Good news is that this should pass in about 15 more hours.

3 hardcore puke sessions and 4 hours of toilet time and I think I am mostly out of it. I made a business decision when my wife started getting it yesterday around 2 to go ahead and get it so I will have time to recover. I’m down 7 pounds
