I'm kind of intrigued by these all tube preamp pedals, and yeah, I may be getting one. Take the tube preamp out of an amp, shove it into a pedal, put an attenuated 0 watt tube power amp into it to get line level outs for DI, throw in an IR loader for cab tones, add a dash of MIDI control, onboard fx and an effects loop and... you wind up as close to real tube amp tones as you can get in something that can be lashed to a pedalboard with a lot of modern niceties. At least that is what the user hype says. The Tone King Imperial is a port of their amp of the same name that has two channels, fender blackface and fender tweed.

If its good enough tone for Greg Koch, its certainly good enough tone for my humble needs.

Friedman has similar pedals for its amps. Anyone got any experience with these?

  • Picked this up last year.  Debatable whether it’s worth the money, but it’s badass and I haven’t found a clone that can match it.

  • I have been glancing at that Boss Katana 50 for a few days and late last night one was posted on Facebook Marketplace that looked practically brand new for $170. I didn't send a message about it

Ironically, my main reason for not using these isn't sonics, but rather I don't like bending over to mess with them lol. Also why I prefer halfstacks. Controls at waist level!

Owwww! My back hurts from hauling these half stacks around! But look how I save my back with where the controls are!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Few things sounds as good as a Champ run through a half stack. Leo knew when he put a 4 ohm transformer tap on that little amp.

I've got a little Champ 600 reissue that I've run through my friends half stack. So good.

My brown Deluxe through a 4 x 12 will melt faces. I support all these little guys through big cabs

I bet it does. But what I love about the Champ is the likelihood of a impedance matchup between the amp and the speaker (of course, a 4x12 isn't necessarily 4 ohms). Be careful running that 8 ohm Deluxe into a lower impedance cabinet. Low to high mismatch is far safer.

The only 4 ohm 4 x 12 I have is the one I had built for my Bassman. All the rest are typical 16 ohm Marshalls.

Interesting. My limited familiarity with Marshall is evident. The only 4x12 I ever had was an early 70s Sunn, which was 4 ohm, which I used with my Bassman 100.
