February 20Feb 20 Got a teeny tiny parametric EQ in for that mini board. Gonna have this on to do minor tweaking between guitars. Scoop the mids, or clean the mud, or dial out the 2k-5k ice pick. No idea how well it works yet, but I love its size. How are you liking the EQ? I'm looking for something like that on my pedal steel board.

How are you liking the EQ? I'm looking for something like that on my pedal steel board. So for question 1, I am using the tonex one in dual mode, with basically a green and red setting that I toggle between. They are the same amp model (60s Vox AC30), but the green is clean and the red is sorta crunchy. The vast majority of the time I'm on green and using combinations of the blues mood and ratsbane to drive it, but if I want higher gain than I can get from that, I go to the red and use both pedals to push it. The little parametric eq works great for what I want. It's super quiet, does not color the tone with everything set at unity, and gives you control over a single band from 50hz to 5Khz. You can make that band as wide as you want, and boost or cut, and it's got an overall volume knob, too, so it could even be used as a boost pedal. If you just want to cut a single problem area, or boost an area for certain passages (like hitting a TS for its mid hump in a solo), it's great. If you want something to more comprehensively sculpt the signal, you'd want something like an Empress Para EQ MK II (which I also have and is great, but not for this little gigging board).

March 21Mar 21 I need a powersource for pedals and an inline tuner for ... tuning. I could go search and read this whole thread or, someone who knows the answer could save me the hassle. Current count is 1 wah pedal and 2 other pedals. I suspect that number will increase by 1 tuner and who knows what else.

March 21Mar 21 I use a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 3+. The Cioks units are great too. Turbo Tuner is probably the most solid unit out there, though I just got a Peterson Strobostomp mini for the form factor and have no complaints

May 30May 30 Well I was taking some pictures for help troubleshooting why my a/b/y box sounds like shit, but it turns out I just needed to spray deoxit all over everything. So here’s some pedal innards pictures of an interesting a/b/y box, or at least interesting as far as a/b/y boxes go.
June 28Jun 28 For several years, I had the Empress phaser on my board. I was working on a lot of 70's-inspired funk songs, and the Empress has some modes where it behaves more like an envelope filter. The problem was that you had to access the back side of the pedal to engage those switches. It was a pretty cool studio tool, but way too complex and inaccessible to live on a pedalboard. It got replaced by the Waylon phaser, which is much simpler, yet still gets a nice range of useable sounds. Edited June 28Jun 28 by Paul Wesley

July 22Jul 22 Gonna be selling some good pedals that aren't getting played for various reasons, none of which are because they suck. Some have been made redundant, some are niche and not being used much, etc... Pm me if you want any of these. Prices are Surly discounts. Will hold a few days to see if anyone is interested before listing on reverb at non-Surly prices. Snouse BlackBox 2 (Overdrive $150 + shipping) PastFX Elastic Mattress (Flanger $125 + shipping) PastFX Rotary Phaser ($200 plus shipping) ZVex Vibrophase (Vibrato/phaser $150 plus shipping) Subdecay Vagabond Tremolo ($100 + shipping) Red Panda Radius (Ring modulator $225 + shipping) Edited July 22Jul 22 by Goredho
July 26Jul 26 I got this SY1 to play around with, but since upgraded to a Zoia from soundscape master @Goredho advice so moving it on. I threw it up on Reverb, but if any Surlyites want it the friends price is 125. Basically mint and comes with box etc...
July 27Jul 27 I am really enjoying the Waylon phaser, but this trend of the insane brightness of the on/off lamp on pedals has to stop. I had to put a piece of tape over it to be able to read the dial settings.
August 15Aug 15 So I was sharing this with @Goredho but though the pedal guys might be into this. Boss just released the RT-2 rotary sim recently and being a sucker for all thing GIlmour I had to get one. The old RT 20, while not great for Leslie, was the pedal for doing a Doppola emulation. This one seems like it can do that thing, plus the Leslie is much more convincing. In a continuing series of me mangling Gilmour solos, I did a quick pass on Mother last night. The one drawback is there is no mix knob on this, because of the small form factor they ran out of room. So my take is it's pretty right on for live Gilmour, bhut a bit to wet for the studio. I think running a blender pedal with it you could get extremely close though. https://samply.app/p/RD3BA6HhsgoLW5rIKkh9

August 15Aug 15 Here's the actual solo. I think if I nudged the gain on the Ram's Head a tick and EQ a little low mid and bass out, it's very close tone wise. Anyway this was my ad for the RT-2. I am pretty happy with it. https://www.kitrae.net/music/MP3/Mother Solo_Studio_Recording.mp3

August 15Aug 15 Just seems like fuzz kind of lives in its own world. I hear much bigger differences between the flavors of fuzz than I do with, say, flavors of overdrive. Fuzz face, big muff, tonebender, octavia ,etc... all seem to have their own distinct sound and characteristics. ODs do, too, but not to the same degree. They also seem to really favor certain pairings with pickups and/or amps. Like, I hate the bridge strat pickup. But get some dark fuzz on it, and all the sudden its a usable, musical thing. Put that same dark fuzz on a humbucker, and its sounds like a bowl of oatmeal. My current favorite fuzz, tonebender style, in a mini format. Can get as wooly as I'd ever want, tone knob to dial out darkness, it cleans up superbly with a guitar's volume knob and sounds good with most pickups. That last thing I sent you, @G650, used this with the volume knob rolled to 3-4 w/neck & middle strat pickups.
August 15Aug 15 Yeah, fuzz has to be the most variable by far. I generally chalk it up to the circuits being so simple and unfiltered. You can spend the rest of your life going being between different fuzzes and they will all be so damn unique. I am totally with you in the Strat bridge pickup, I never use it except for Gilmour stuff, and he managed it because he had these full tilt dark wooly fuzz faces and Muffs. The combo goes together like peas and carrots. I still have to add a touch of 1.5k on an EQ to get it right I find. I currently have an Analogman Sunface, which is a Fuzz Face, with the BC109 chip, to mimic the Dark Side era Fuzz Face. But just typing this it's wild to think how much variation there is in these, same circuit but different chip is wildly different. I also have a Sunlion with a Tonebender 1.5 circuit, which is very Fuzz Face like. I have always considered Muffs their own thing. I have an original Black Russian I've owned since it was new. I actually just got it because I didn't know any better back then, I was just trying to buy a distortion pedal lol. They fetch decent money these days actually. I got the Ram's Head reissue not super long ago, and that was a 100% Gilmour thing.
August 15Aug 15 4+ years ago, I got rid of my pedal board and got a Boss ME-80 multi-effects pedal. Most effects are tolerable, but I can't get a good overdrive sound. I'm probably going back on Reverb to buy back my TS-10 or get a JHS Bonsai pedal. [Edit] Holy cow. TS-10 prices are stupid. Someone on Reverb is selling for $250. Guitar Center (lol) is selling one for $450. Edited August 15Aug 15 by Superhero

I'm probably going back on Reverb to buy back my TS-10 or get a JHS Bonsai pedal. I've tried lots of permutations of gear, and one thing I've found is that I really like to stay analog for things that go in front of my preamp (or facsimile of a preamp in my case) in a signal chain. Fuzz, dist, OD, phaser, envelope filter, etc... Just my experience that the digital replicants are exposed as such at the head of a signal chain. Digital modulation, delay, reverb, etc.... in an effects loop (or after your amp/cab facsimile), I don't have any issues with -- these are like having effects loaded on a channel strip of a recorded track in a studio. But being super impressed with Tonex for emulating amps and cabs, I am very interested to try out some of their stomp box captures in front of an amp (real or modeled). If it works well, it might be good as a wildcard dirt box that could be used for tones outside my core analog dirt pedals. This video shows them switching back and forth between real pedals and tonex captures of the pedals, and I can't hear much difference. But it's YouTube sound quality, and it's not testing things like reactions to rolling off the volume knob and such. But I have a tonex one here at the house, I might have to just download some of these captures and try them out.
October 19Oct 19 Way back in November of 2016 I put myself on the wait list for an Analogman King of Tone. My number cam up and I ordered it in February 2019. When you order and clear your name from the wait list, you have the option of going right back on and ordering another. I had forgotten I did this and last month Analog Mike let me know my name is at the top again, so I ordered another and it arrived last week. So that ridiculously long initial wait time of almost two and a half years has become almost seven. Bruh. CSB
October 19Oct 19 I dig the colors, mine is the OG purple, kinda would like a different color now. I think the wait list is like nine years now lol
October 19Oct 19 Ordered my first pedal board and then realized I left my backpack full of pedals at my neighbor’s house when we practiced. I’m flying out for a few days anyway but looking forward to assembling it all when I get home. Wah, tuner, tremolo, and I picked up the mini tube screamer (because I still need to send my shag screamer back to @AnotherUTFan for diagnosis sometime). Setup for the party will be HH Strat, pedal board, Spark 40, Spark Cab. As much as I lobbied for crowd pleasers the guys I’m playing with left in four-five Grateful Dead songs so I will likely hit the bar during most of those.

In 2025, weve nailed BB alts, you dont need a boutique solution. (But I love boutique solution culture for a lot of other reasons.)

If there's anything special about how they sound, I didn't hear it in the many years I owned one. My memory of that pedal is that the housing and connection points were cheap and it seemed doomed to break under foot. A reissue with a $40 analogman mod (either brown or silver) is a far better pedal for less money.

Yeah, I heard for years that a TS in front of a tweed amp is just to much mids. But when it comes down to it, if you crank a tweed bassman and hit the front end with a tube screamer in a live setting, it sounds glorious and cuts through beautifully.

Vids with guys in dark rooms surrounded by rack equipment...is kinda anathema to me. Three things are necessary for this guy: Lit stage, line into board, line out to amp. Maybe, if I'm really feeling really super mega-ambitious, I can slide out an amp with an effects loop and be bothered with 4 cords. But that pretty much only happens when I get the experimental itch on the rare occasion that Mrs. F and Jr. are gone and I've got a couple of hours to kill. After the obligatory 30 seconds spent in IWPIHB. /obvious. I gotta say though, I am super jealous of the time you tweaker guys have a'tweakin' on all those knobs.
November 3Nov 3 Not that much tweaking. I find a model I want with the software, assign it a space on the pedal, and away we go. I'm just finally getting into having a setup that I can record to.
