Since Cam Newton, no SEC QB has been drafted higher than the 4th round.  Cam was a long time ago.  Since then the B12 has had FOUR 1st round QBs: Mayfield, Mahomes, Robert Griffin III and Brandon Weeden.  Plus a 2nd (Smith at WVU) and a 3rd rounder (OSU's Rudolph).

The highest drafted SEC QBs since Newton have been 4th rounders Prescott, Wilson (AR) and Dobbs (TN).  They're basically equivalent to Baylor's Bryce Petty and OU's Landry Jones - essentially afterthoughts.

Eli and Peyton have 4 rings between the two. How many other SEC QBs have won a ring?

He’s not, but he’s brought a functional offense back. People are waiting to see what he can do with an above average QB.  He does seem to get recruiting pretty well, which is something Steve never gave a shit about.

Steve was the starter kit for Mike leach. Plug and play a 3 star qb into a 4k passer.  Both of them didn't wait for Vince or colt to come along. Wash, rinse, repeat.

3 gumps....Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler.

in addition to Cam, the Mannings, and the 3 above, in the old school era there’s Fran Tarkington (UGA) who started in 2 SBs, and Norris Weese (Miss), David Woodley and Stan Humphries (both LSU) who each started in 1 SB.

Joe Willie Namath, for one; Bart Starr for two others; Kenny Stabler for a fourth ring.  That's off the top of my old gray head.

Humphries went to LA-Monroe. LSU was whiffing on future NFL QBs all over the place back then with him and Bobby Hebert presumably not getting offers.

I would say it is less about where they played their HS ball and more about them choosing pass happy schools outside the SEC. Currently there are two starters from AL and one backup who was supposed to start this past season, Philip Rivers, Jameis Winston and AJ(backup). With only 32 NFL teams, that is 1/16th of the starters, out of 50 states. Other SEC states like GA(2), FL(2) and LA(1) account for 5 other starters, for a total of 7 of 32. I am purposely not counting TX. If you do lump in MO, you get one more, for a total of 1/4 of all starters.

The really big irony in all of this is that the SEC could quite easily have been the conference to dethrone the PAC as a QB factory instead of the Big XII.  Hal Mumme was tearing it up at UK with an obscure OC by the name of Mike Leach.  Mumme was run out of Lexington for what seem like petty recruiting violations in retrospect.  It was certainly nothing like the Albert Means stuff.  Had that not happened, the SEC would have been the conference forced to adapt to the Air Raid - on the defensive side of the ball at the very minimum.

Instead Leach comes to OU with Stoops, then becomes HC at Tech almost immediately.  And the rest is history.  As always, the innovation in college football is driven almost entirely by underdog programs trying to compete with big name schools with from a position of severe disadvantage.

Steve's offense was even simpler than Leach's, he just found QBs that were willing to trust him and throw to a spot versus waiting for people to get open.  Steve also always had an underrated running game that forced defenses to play honest.  What Leach did with Hal Mumme was much more groundbreaking IMO.

Leach's offense is actually simpler than Steve's. It's only looks complicated by design like many modern defenses...  But it's so simple that it is designed to be ran from the line 75% of the time.  One QB in Lubbock ran it from the line of scrimmage 90% of the time his last year or two.
