Loki the lab puppy has been back. 8 months old and 70 pounds. It's hard to remind myself he's still a pup.

Unless she crates him in the car, say goodbye to those nice leather seats.

I don't buy cars with leather seats anymore.

@rage-a-holicThat’s Lab #9.  The smallest one is over 100lbs.

What damage can be done has been done.

We’re currently looking for a Lab purchase 12 Step facility.

That little black lab puppy got a name yet or do we get to name him?

I vote Stanley

The wife ran into a couple at our HEB with this bundle with them. She jokingly asked "Are you giving her away?" .....Well that question,  a new 3 month old, and that they had just found her on their property (somebody apparently dumped her), she is now terrorizing our clan of misfit mutts.

Many fish were jumped onto very directly.

Few were caught.

Dog was happy.

Great success.

I don’t allow hippies or men with ponytails in my house so we went and got a code-compliant haircut. Also, gentlemen, I have the 55+ grandmother and aunt demographic locked up. Will try to leave some for everyone else.

If your dog isn't allowed on the couch, do you really have a dog?

Nope.

Luna refuses to get on the couch unless it's storming out. She's too busy on guard duty I guess.

Did someone say couch?  Eli is getting a sister around August 1.  She's another Giant Schnauzer and apparently can match his energy level.  This should be interesting.  Pic is Eli.

Pippa's still doing well on her chemo.  2-week checkup shows no obvious growth and she's handling the pills okay.  We'll go another 4 weeks, so at the 6-week mark do a full blood/imaging test to see if the mass is (at least) stable or (hopefully) shrinking a bit!

On the happy news front, say hi to Rusty!

He's a rescue (yay!) - saved from an abandonment situation, so we don't know his exact age or breed.  We're thinking 1-2 yrs old and (maybe?) a Vizsla/Beagle mix.  Anyone have any opinions on what he might be???  He's a Stage 5 Clinger, always wants to love and be loved, and is getting along well with Pippa/Kate.  He's still intact, but that'll be taken care of soon - as he's marked inside the house twice, and that has to stop!  His first "official with us" vet visit is today, but a post-rescue one showed a clean bill of health.

He's about 23 pounds and definitely has that rust-colored soft fur.  Thus, the name "Rusty" (that and the Clark Griswold connection with my outdoor Christmas decoration illness).

Rocky.  But get this -I just found out “he” is a she.

What’s better than one dog, two dogs of course. Picked up our new puppy after originally getting on the list last October. I think I had forgotten how much trouble puppies are especially when our older dog has been super easy. Anyways, here’s Milo the Labradoodle laying in Toby’s food bowl spot apparently waiting on supper.

Forgot this one earlier, Toby has not been pleased with Milo moving in on his spots. He’s finally eased up on him some today and is starting to play with him while still trying to keep him in line.D4DC3C08-79A5-4669-A369-1A8C48E60822.thumb.jpeg.7c248dc2c3c207032651852e000c8d52.jpeg

All the guest dogs left. Penny brought me one of her skinned toys as tribute.

We’re putting down our 13 year old collie today. I married into him. My wife has had him ever since he was a pup. The sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. Now, he was kind of a priss. He didn’t play fetch. He wasn’t athletic. He was kind of a diva. He liked to prance down the street on walks. If the leash got caught behind his leg, he’d stop until you removed it.

But he loved everybody. He never met an animal or human that he didn’t think was his friend. But he’s been struggling to stand on his own the last few weeks. And he’s disoriented. His quality of life is crap so today is the day. Gonna miss him.

Looking back, I’m so glad we took him on a road trip to Wyoming and South Dakota and Montana in 2020 during the pandemic. He was so happy. And he could look pretty damn majestic.

Virtual hugs to you and your wife for your loss. He was majestic. Go somewhere together, a place you like and reminesce about him with pictures, etc. Give him a good send off. It helps a little to indulge in rituals at such a time. My condolences.

Maeby made a semi rare visit to the groomer.

Advice please. I give my dogs sentinel pills for heartworm and fleas every month. My wee chihuahua mix is biting his leg and leaving bald spots, two on one leg. He doesn't seem itchy and I can't see any fleas. I mean he might get some in the yard but they don't stay on because I can't find any when I check. WTF? Is this because he is a nervous chihuahua weirdo or are these allergy related?

Any home remedies or should I take the hit for visit and meds from the vet? I had a propane issue this month that cost me a bit and am trying to watch expenses but I don't want my little guy to suffer. I looked on the internets and it seems to say it is okay to use neosporin but he still licks it and I don't want to make him sick. Should I run to Tomlinson's or Tractor Supply and see what they have for this? This seems like a problem that should have a home remedy if it is allergies. If it is nervous chihuahua weirdness then fuck my life. The little guy is a cute prancer twink and this really fucks up his look.

Apoquel works amazingly on allergies, but it's expensive as hell.  Of course, it might be a lot cheaper for a chihuahua than for a Newfie.  We were paying $5/day for Apoquel for Zeus, but it kept him from chewing holes in himself, so...

It was finally my turn in the COVID box this week, so my fresh air and fishing time was limited to virtual options on the back porch

My fishing buddy has a hard time making the distinction.

Maggie had terrible skin allergies and would get 'hot spots' all the time, she'd break the skin and everything. i have several recs...

are the spots in a place that can be covered by a doggie-shirt? that worked at times... i'd get a medicated anti-itch spray, wet the spot down then put on her tshirt...helped a lot. likewise, there are several medicated anti-itch shampoos that would help temporarily. she looked pretty cute in her hipster tshirt 🥰

20210809_151527.thumb.jpg.15940505cdd1f5403cb21c453966a9f9.jpg

also...BENADRYL! you can get like 100 generic capsules for like $3 at HEB. Maggie was tiny, i first started giving her half of one without much effect, asked the vet and he basically said give her as much as needed lol, worst it would do is make her sleepy. i mean, she stopped scratching when she slept, so...win!

Apoquel - as Beau mentioned, it wasn't exactly cheap but def worked the best.  HOWEVER... longterm use can damage kidneys and it had some GI side effects. have to be very careful with dosage. in the end i took her off it even though it worked best, just seemed too harsh on her system.

Cytopoint shot - every 30 days or so, like $45 i think? kinda weird though...it worked for a long time... then stopped working so we quit for a year...then tried it again and voila, it worked again.

finally...food. in her final six months or so, as her health was declining, i ended up changing up her diet (to prescription food), eliminating a wet food that my mom used to give her and which i had continued bc why not...and after like three months i realized we hadn't had to schedule her Cytopoint shot bc she had just... stopped scratching! i don't actually know if it was causation but there was a definite correlation! (Cesar's fyi)

good luck fixing your little guy's problem! i know how i react to mosquito bites (i'm one that gets the giant welts that itch for an hour, ugh) and i used to feel so bad for her when she'd start in on one of those spots.
