I’ve never met any of these dogs, but I have tears each time I read one of these posts. Dogs are so very special. We are lucky to have them.

My daughter and I took Sebastian for a trail walk in Memorial Park yesterday.  He thought it was great fun, but It wore both of us out.

Hook em Leo

Leo’s first collar was burnt orange. He watched many Texas games with me.

Hook ‘em indeed.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Today fucking sucked.

Kate went fast today. No details, but she crossed the Bridge just before midnight. We were with her and it was the right thing to do, but it never makes it easier. She had a wonderful 14 years on this earth.

You were our social butterfly, Miss Katie Bug. I know Pippa and Winston are happy to see you.

Hi I wear diapers now. Sheesh you guys what a mess this heat thing is.

RIP to all the good boys and girls and I'm so sorry for your losses. It is the worst. PXL_20250129_051117772_MP.thumb.jpg.4cecf10275d874cace9b1989c926ad4e.jpg

On Monday morning our one-year-old hound/husky Ned was suddenly hobbling, barely able to walk on all fours and in obvious pain in his front right leg. After an x-ray, he was diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), also called flattening of the bone.

Anyone have experience with this? It’s basically a flap of cartilage that forms at a joint causing lameness, not uncommon with larger dogs.

We’re scheduling him for surgery, which has a 75% success rate, so we’re hopeful he’ll go on to have a healthy and active lifestyle. But it’s a long recovery with at least four weeks of exercise restriction and no playing with other dogs, which sucks for such a high-energy pup. He’s being a pretty good sport so far, but pain meds probably help.

Good luck, Ned. Daddy must have just gotten some bills paid off.

As with most things, doggy-ibuprofen and, possibly, puppy-CBD will cover most of it.  Good luck keeping him calm.  After my last two crazy-dogs were fixed, they weren't supposed to jump up on anything for a week or two.  That lasted about a day.

My dogs are nothing special, but they’re very calm with babies and with people they could use a smile. Is there a training/certification we can sign them up for?

I really like the Top Hands organization. They do awesome work with horses. Looking for the dog equivalent.

Follow up:  Ned's having surgery on Friday.  From what I've read, 75% of surgeries to correct OCD are successful, with dogs no longer experiencing lameness after recovery, so fingers crossed this works.  It sucks, because in early January he had two weeks of exercise restriction to recover from neutering, and now he'll need closer to four weeks of crate rest, which is tough on a one-year-old large dog who craves a lot of physical activity.  He'll be doped up on Trazodone for much of it to keep him chill and off the healing shoulder as much as possible.  Poor guy.  Looking forward to running with him in the backyard again.

Get better, Ned.

Thoughts and prayers for all of the good buddies who crossed the bridge, or are recovering, or trying to recover, from sickness or injury.  Sebastian is my rock these days, and I don’t know what I would do without him.

I took Sebastian to the dog park at lunch today and it was just me and another old man with two coon hound puppies.  They were so full of energy and my big guy was just trying to chill.  They were jumping on him and barking at him and he started growling at them with his ears back.  I went up to him and gave him the settle down command and he immediately chilled out and just ignored them.  I was really proud of him because that is something that he struggles with and we’ve been working on it.  I praised him extensively, and thought to myself that I could probably take a cue from him these days.

Ned is home from surgery. Long-term prognosis is excellent and short-term recovery is much more manageable. We’re so pumped.

He’s wearing the shirt because it keeps him from directly scratching the incision. But my daughter goes to Oregon, so go Ducks!

We had the Golden Retriever festival in town today, and it was my idea of what heaven should be like.  Took my pyr and tried to blend in, plus lots of pics of randos:

That's awesome. @Beau Vine does your Pyr have the extra toes?

Of course!

I have a Pyr/ Lab mix. Best dog ever. Kinda had the extra toes, but we had them removed when she was a pup.

image.thumb.jpeg.630d3d424e4c5f5d95b406d6e480d486.jpeg

Later found out you're generally not supposed to remove them unless they are causing a problem, but the vet we had at the time advised us to, when we got her spayed. They were pretty tiny.

Trixie has the extra toes. They told us her mom was an Anatolian and dad was a mastiff. As she's taking shape, nah. I'm thinking Mom was a Pyr and dad was a pitty. PXL_20250110_192135384.thumb.jpg.139226e960f536b3262a31c39c06428d.jpg

OK, the kissing booth and the ski goggles got me.

Years ago I went to the Basset Hound Olympics in Oregon.  Talk about heaven.  The best event was "napping".  It was a field full of Basset Hounds with their owners trying to get them to fall asleep.  First dog to nod off won the gold.

Golden retriever fest looks like an awesome time. The smiles (human and dog) in those pics are incredible.

I went to a Great Dane gathering at Bull Creek a while back. There were about a hundred of those ponies running around like a herd of horses.

The owners had trash bags and a pooper scooper. Regular shit bags were inadequate.

Passed out on the kitchen floor while I’m making Super Bowl munchies. You can see the vet shaved a large part of his leg for the surgery. We joke that it looks like he’s wearing a muscle shirt.

This puppy bowl is intense. But I really need Team Ruff to pick up the pace. I parlayed the Chiefs ML with Ruff -2.

The league is clearly rigging this shit. That dog's tail crossed the plane of the goal line, but they said no score. Absolute bullshit. The Team Ruff coach needs to bring this up in his press conference. Hey coach, I'll start a fund to pay your fine!

We were sitting around the fire at our local brewpub last night with a bunch of strangers, and one lady piped up, "My face hurts from smiling so much today."

Everyone just started laughing and then said, "Mine, too."
