Well, I'll tell the shortest version of a long story.

I live on some acres and as such have to take my trash to a dump.

I was rolling by Friday with the woman I'm seeing heading to drop off Darlene for grooming and take the woman to Valentine's Day lunch. (She works evening shift at hospital)

In in the dump there was a little critter running around that was preciously getting nearly under wheel. I threw my trash out and could see she was badly under weight. I went to pull a milk bone from a snack bag behind seat and critter tried to jump in.

Well, I gave her a snack and she quietly went to munching. Got back in the car, and "asked" female, hey any objections to dropping the little girl off at the shelter. Of course not, cause I'd have told her ass to get out if she did. I spoke with the trash dump attended and confirmed it wasn't his and someone left it. Offered to take it to the pound and he was happy because he was scared about the dog and wasn't sure what to do. (He couldn't leave).

So i head to the shelter which, of course, was closed until noon. So... quick shift, I decided to go to my vet which I know takes walk in for health assessment and shots. I volunteer at the shelter and figure it will make the dog more adoptable and to do my part for dog kind. They accept and can even give her a bath.

I take Darlene to the groomer and while I'm there snag a leash, collar and bag of food. Of course you need a bowl too. Just so, you know, I could figure out best plan for the dog.

We go nice lunch. During which the woman I'm seeing smiles after I explain i got the leash, collar, bowls and food. "Oh I figured that's what you put in the trunk."

I already knew... but then admitted it. I just adopted a new dog.

On the way back to the vet to pick up my new dog, girl friend came up with the name Valerie for Valentine's Day.

So... meet Valerie who has her shots, only had worms (already medicated) and is getting chipped and fixed ASAP.

Stories like that always make it dusty for me.  Bless you for your kindness, which I'm sure will be returned tenfold with love.

Valerie will always be grateful to you for being her guardian angel.

I had to go back several times to see if Darlene was the girlfriend or the dog.

Only one I've ever known was the asst manager at Whataburger when I worked there in the 90s. She was cute, but probably had some recessive genes.

WAY TO GO.

Only question I have is in last pic of Darlene is she having her nudes painted by some famous French artist?

Well, these two ding-dongs dragged a bag of "organic" fertilizer into the house (not sure where they found it) through the dog door and spread it out all over the kitchen to see what they could grow. That was a fun lunch break for dad.

Darlene is the most curious "sleep position" dog I've ever known. I should probably post more of it on IG cause....

She moves the hotel beds around for entertainment and sleeping needs.

Darlene and Valerie and still figuring out their relationship. It's probably a shock to you all but Darlene isn't always super happy about sharing space, attention, toy, bones and food. Shocking!@

TACOMA, WA—Operating on pure natural instinct while leaping into action to protect his beloved owners, heroic dog Snickers saved a local family of five from the threat of an herb-roasted chicken, sources confirmed Wednesday. “It was a close call, but luckily Snickers could sense the golden brown skin of the chicken we’d just roasted for dinner, and his protective nature took over from there,” said Danielle Greco, mother and longtime owner of Snickers, detailing how the 4-year-old terrier mix snapped into action without a moment’s hesitation, quickly neutralizing the threat by clamping his jaws around the chicken’s succulent legs and thighs. “If it weren’t for Snickers, I shudder to think what would have happened to my family. We might have enjoyed a filling meal of carved rotisserie chicken—or worse. Looking back, I can’t believe I ever hesitated to adopt a dog. Snickers isn’t just a part of our family. He’s our protector.” At press time, Snickers had reportedly pounced on a suspicious looking Sara Lee pound cake that the family was on the very brink of enjoying for dessert.

This is Ole (Oh-Lee).  He was named after Olaf, the snowman in the Disney movie Frozen.  I wanted to name him Blanco, but was outvoted….by my granddaughters…I never stood a chance.  Ten years ago, my wife’s consulting job required a fair amount of travel and she was worried about me being at home by myself.  Our three kids were all out of college and lived out of town.  So, she decided we needed a dog. Specifically, I needed a dog for companionship when she was away.  I told her I was fine and didn’t need a dog, but she was undeterred….as wives can be.  Within a week, she goes to a Poodle rescue shelter and brings home Ole.  Don’t let the “Poodle”in Ole or his unassuming appearance fool you.  Ole is fast as shit.  He catches squirrels.  He doesn’t hurt them.  He just wants to play with ‘em and, over time, the squirrels at the Stafford Estate have come to understand that it’s just a game for Ole, so the squirrels play along.   In fact, the squirrels will lie spread eagle on the sidewalk outside the kitchen window waiting for Ole to see them, so he’ll come outside to play.  Over the past several years, my wife has been out of state up to a month at a time to take care of her ailing parents.  I don’t know what I’d do without Ole.

she passed suddenly and unexpectedly in October - she was 10.  she still had so much energy when she passed.  it was awful and everything seemed so lonely without her - as all my fellow dog people understand i'm sure.  maybe kai can become the new food picture model.  she is certainly very food motivated.

disclaimer: i was not in involved in this pic of kai getting taken on the 14th, lol:

@Harrison Stafford Hah! Squirrel Games!!

I would absolutely love to see a video of Ole engaged in "Squirrel Torment" if you're able to do so.

@Jack Straw Right.. sure. Tell yourself whatever you need to, but this is a safe space for dog men.

This is how she sleeps about 90% of the time. Weirdo.

what an awesome page!so Duke got into a scuffle at the neighborhood biergarten last weekend...a four yoa male dachshund rolled up, and they were just fine until they weren't! but... they were both leashed and tiny so we just pulled lol.

i'll say this... that dog had about 4 lbs on Duke (hey, when you're sub-10 lbs that's a lot!)... and Duke had him pinned on the ground in about 3 seconds.

heh. my boy.

i have lost all sense of personal space 😆

It's not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.

Blue weighs about 45 pounds, but she's fearless and quick as hell. She has yet to meet a dog she hasn't been able to take down in just a few seconds. I was out in my driveway one day with her on a leash, and some random loose dog that was about 100 pounds came around unexpectedly from the other side of the car, and Blue had him pinned as soon as she saw him.

Amber, Cori, Crosby, Jaca,  I remember all of them.

and even 16 months later it hurts like fucking hell to include my Sadie girl in that list.

Ahh shit Jack, I didnt realize you lost Quinn.   Im sorry.

thats a very cute looking pup though

So maybe I’m the dumbass for not knowing this already, so dumb comment amnesty requested, but I just found out that having an Apple Air Tag on your dog to keep track of them doesn’t work like gps. It apparently has to be within range of other iPhones/Apple devices to be able to connect to the internet.

My friend’s dog escaped yesterday and the tag would only ping when he happened to be close enough to people with iPhones, so we only got his location a couple of times in the 4 hours he was gone. Luckily, he wandered back closer to home and was found, but it was a rude awakening.

Finn, my big Fox hound, has a tag because he has escaped a couple of times around the Steiner ranch area, but I never realized his tag will be useless in the woods.

Anyone have recs for an actual gps unit for pets if they get lost?

Any real-time GPS tracker for dogs that doesn't require connectivity to another device through Bluetooth or WiFi will require its own monthly cellular subscription.

Yeah, like I’m familiar with iridium sat beacons in the hiking world and Garmin, for instance, has a monthly plan for those. Surely there’s a dog equivalent.

I've never used one, but these seem to be well reviewed and aren't as bulky as some that I've seen

Garmin also makes one

I'm looking at them too, as Darlene is starting to take Valerie on her walk abouts. I found this this break down of Fi and other products. It's really in depth and I think does a great job of highlighting pros and cons. Being remote Fi can be an issue for me given ATT coverage.

Oh, and because pics or it didn't happen.
