Love this pic, but acknowledge that it looks like that weird scene from The Shining.

There is a place in Austin called Remington Ranch and they have a bus called the bark bus that takes pooches out to their property in Buda. Our dog rode it once. Second time my wife tried to drop him off while I was out of town he refused to get on the bus.

Met a friend’s fiancée last night who does work with rescues. She showed me a picture of a 278 pound mastiff mix. 278. I’ll see if I can get a copy.

That's a big boy, but no way that's 278. (Or that girl next to him is bigger than she appears)

This is Penny. We found her at a neighborhood park a couple of years ago. She was ~14 weeks old. Matted fur, fleas, ticks and starving. She is one of the best dogs I’ve ever been around.

well, sorry, this is one of those posts...💔

Cass was an unwanted dog, already 9 or 10 when we got her in 2013....which makes her REALLY old for a big dog. she had rotten teeth, neurotic behavior and a jacked up digestive system when we got her...all of which we fixed within the first 3 months.

three different times we've thought 'this is it' only to bring her home from the vet a day later, much improved. three major surgeries, including losing her spleen two years ago.diagnosed with vestibular disease a year ago. she just kept going... she's a fighter.

and she used to be a FIGHTER... the most gentle, sweet dog with people, and with dogs that knew their place. but the rare dog that would come at her, look out...'don't start none, won't be none'.

she loved the beach, catching treats, walking, and just being loved. she'd go chair to chair when we had company, never obnoxious, just sat quietly, patient, waiting for some love. when that person stopped, she'd quietly move to the next.  the most chill, sweetest dispositioned dog we've ever had, by far. she always shared her bed, even when her roommate was a hog.

i never had a dog make it to old age like this, my previous losses were both sudden and traumatic. this is easier. she can't get up on her own, major balance issues, frequent falls, she spins and paces, has fallen in the pool half a dozen times in recent months. sometimes she just stands and stares at a wall. she's in no pain and still eats healthy... but she's started having accidents in the house, in her bed even.

it's time,  Cass is pretty tired. the vestibular disease has really taken it's toll. so... today is the day. i fed her some steak about an hour ago.

sweet Cass 💕

sidenote...i have the best damn vet ever. for the second time, they are coming to the house to do it this afternoon, so her last minutes aren't full of stress and anxiety. they did the same with our dog Malcolm 12 years ago ❤ BRAH

additional sidenote... the little miniature dachshund was my mother's that i inherited when mom passed last year. in the space of 4 months, she lost her sister (a little chihuahua), my mom died, and she had to move to a whole new house with us. i love this little dog...i hope she doesn't get depressed, she's 15 and has been thru a lot of changes in the past 18 months ❤

Very sorry for your loss mchookem. Godspeed Cass, you beautiful girl.

Happy 11th birthday to my Perfect Pippa...  I've never had a better companion.

So sorry.

BRAH is the best. Dr. Simmons is good people.

Dr. Simmons actually retired this week! i don't know if anyone new has joined yet...i used to see the younger Dr. Simmons but i don't know if he's still there, i haven't seen him in a long while. but Dr. Toth is the one that took such good care of Cass.

i recommend BRAH to everybody...looks a little shabby but they are wonderful. everybody i've referred there has agreed.

most recently, a friend with a bitchy little chihuahua (is there any other kind lol) said Toth was the first vet that was able to clip her nails w/o her trying to chew his hand off 🙂

Went camping in the woods this past weekend. Willow loved it. Got to run around and be a dog. Splashing, climbing, jumping, exploring, and generally being a happy goof. Gonna take the kids and pups this weekend to camp on Mt Hood.1c3b5a304e345b4ac1bd2e631f40f38a.jpg4ccd4361e465bd743526ab8bb09835d8.jpgba5ec7552144619579fc8112f0ee412a.jpg

Young Simmons left awhile ago. I knew Everett was retiring. Toth bought out his shares. They told me Dr. Riddle was going to fill in for awhile. He was our vet when I was just a kid. He had his clinic next to the old Glastron boat factory on 183, before moving to Burnet Road , just south of Koenig (North Austin Animal Hospital).

As far as it looking a little shabby, that keeps your bill down. When you walk into those fancy vet offices, you know you’re about to get bent over.

Sadie and Chloe both go to N. Austin Animal Hosp.   Normally the two of them get either Dr Harris or Dr Heppner, but we've gotten Dr Stone a few times recently.

really solid place,  only gripe I have is they are overcharging a bit on apoquel, but the rest of their services are very reasonable.

Neither of my puppers have any issues when we go to the vet, they get all excited to say hi to everyone.

My girlfriend's dog. Pug/Chihuahua/JRT mix. She's 14 and a little bad ass.

yeah, but I know they have to make some money

They are on Burnet Rd afterall... the same section of Burnet Rd whose property tax increases in the last few years have caused the sale or closing of The Omelettery, The Frisco, The Light Bulb Shop, Knife Sharpist, Atomic Tattoo, Nelson Puett, and 2/3 of the Karavel Shoes buildings, plus Im sure a lot more business that I missed, but 5 or 6 of those stores I mentioned had been around for 30+ years, and they just couldnt stay open anymore due to the sheer amount of property tax they were being assessed each year.

I dont want to lose NAAH or cause them to have to move to some other random area in town.

They’ll be alright. The were bought out by one of those big corporate vets a few years ago.

Brother in law is in Kodiak and got a puppy about a month ago 9850e4ec9fb310e78e02bff881527fb8.jpg

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous.

In the yard and couldn’t find our new pup. Other dog found her and lead me over

Any thoughts on invisible fences? Our house came with one but it’s apparently so old I’m almost starting over. I don’t want to dump $1600 into it only to find it can’t contain my dog. He’s pretty strong willed and energetic when he’s outside. I feel like one squirrel or neighbor with a dog on the street and he’d be gone.

Well, 2020 can officially get fucked in the ass.  Crosby started to limp on his right paw, so took him in.  In doing a battery of tests (thinking it was either a nerve issue or arthritis), the discover a massive tumor in his spleen.  Bottom line is- best case scenario is it hasn’t spread and his spleen can be removed.  Worst case is it has and he’s on the clock, and probably a relatively short one.  He’s a couple weeks shy of 11, and even splenectomy will be brutal for him.  But if successful, he would be good for some time.  The alternative is something I’m not allowing myself to think about.  Fuck you, 2020.  Fuck you.
