Eight nominees for Best Picture:

Blackklansman

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Favourite

Green Book

Roma

A Star in Born

Vice

I look forward to the criticism of the Academy for nominating a superhero film because it primarily involves people of color.

So the Sack got a little dissed in the directing category....Also I keep hearing bad things about Bohemian Rhapsody, even from really big Queen fans, but yet it keeps getting nominated and winning shit

fify

we live in a world where Melissa McCarthy is nominated for a fucking Oscar for lead role.

Was she that good or is everyone in complete shock that she isn't running around playing the fat loud crazy chick in this movie? (or maybe she is....I have not seen it)

Eh, Yalitza is going to win anyway.

I enjoyed Black Panther immensely, but Oscar-worthy?  GTFO.

Pretty telling it’s only up for best picture and none of the other major categories.

Wasn’t there supposed to be some new category this year, like “best popular movie” or some such?

Yea but the scrapped it after some backlash immediately after announcing it.

I think this is the only time I have only seen 1 of the best picture nominees. Thats pretty crazy to me. *shrug

I believe it was "Best Performance by an Actor or Actress Who Is Most Likely to Give The Most Controversial Acceptance Speech"

I'm just about done with all of them, but yeah not a good year at all.

Still have to see a bunch of those, but seems like Roma probably has a good shot.  Artsy, politically correct.  And clearly  worthy of a Best Picture nomination.

Although Cuaron won best director before he is the only one of the big three mexican directors not to have a Best Picture.

Current Power Rating:

Roma>>Blackkklansman>>Black Panther

Everyone knows the real reason BP was nominated

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody this weekend then downloaded the 1985 Live Aid concert footage.  The movie recreated the details incredibly close.  I think Malek did a great job.

Very impressed with Lady Gaga.

Enjoyed Green Book.

Further down my list would be Vice.

At the bottom The Favorite.

Next to watch is Roma.

Christ I thought the list was thin but this is like down year of down years right here.

And they should be criticized for that shit. First, Infinity War was better and vastly more entertaining, second, why does BP get a nod when much better films like The Dark Knight or Iron Man (1st one) didn't? Is it because it's such a weak year? I guess I can buy that but probably not how it found its way onto the list.

Kind of embarrassing they put it over If Beale Street Could Talk. (assuming they needed a token nomination)

@tantric superman I haven't seen Roma but I agree with Black Klansman over the rest of the board.

Edited by ztejas

Beale Street should obviously have been nominated (lol at "token" nomination).  imo, remove BP, BR, Green Book, and Vice.  Replace with Beale Street, Hereditary, Sorry To Bother You, and First Reformed.  Much better.

Sorry to Bother You.  That would have been ballsey.  I didn't enjoy the flick at all but it was wacky and now that they are nominating what seems like up to 10 films, why not.

It wasn't my favorite film of the year (definitely was a little over the top at times), but I thought it was really interesting and had a lot of meaningful things to say about our current times.

Also wish there was room for movies like The Rider and Lean on Pete.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/may/06/lean-on-pete-review-andrew-haigh-modern-american-odyssey-charlie-plummer

Those flicks had your heart crawling up into your throat at times, and of the flicks I saw this year, only those and Roma seemed to pack such an emotional punch.  If Black Panther gets nominated, presumably for cinematic flair, then on of these two could have got nominated for gut punch.

I like most of what Paul Schrader has done.  But this product sucked moose cock.

This is her 2nd Academy Award nomination.  Once for Supporting.

So you laugh at me calling it a token nomination then agree that it shouldn't have been nominated? So why do you think it was nominated? Based on its merit as a film?

Your next cogent argument on this board will be the first.

Edited by ztejas
And "token" doesn't have to be because it was a "black" movie (whatever the fuck that even means). It could be that they wanted to include a superhero film. Toy Story 3 was a "token" nom when they slapped that one up there.

That’s right. She got a nomination for Bridesmaids, which would have been like Chris Farley being nominated for Tommy Boy.

Wow.  I haven't seen any of these yet besides Black Panther.  Might need to watch Roma tonight (have been wanting to watch it for a while now).

I really like Olivia Colman in pretty much everything I've seen from her so far (especially Broadchurch and the Night Manager), but have not heard good things about the Favourite as a movie.  Guess I'll need to watch it too.

Make sure you aren't tired and you don't have any distractions. This is a movie that has long quiet spells and you have to dive into its world.

I haven't seen Roma, so its probably gonna win.

17- Shape of Water

16- Moonlight

15- Spotlight

14- Birdman

11-Artist

10- King's Speech

never saw these until after they won.....I seem to just watch losers, i guess

I would have been ok with that.

I know I'm in the minority but I thought Roma was boring af.  Visually it was great but I couldn't wait for it to end.

I've seen Black Panther, Blackklansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody.  It has to be a down year if those three are on the Best Movie list.  I agree with others that Infinity War > Black Panther, but both were well done IMHO.  I think if you have to put one down for Best Movie, you almost have to go with Black Panther as there is at least some acting and a great story and not just action scene after action scene with a huge payoff emotional ending built through all the prior movies.

Bohemian Rhapsody had Rami Malek's performance which was incredible.  Other than that, there isn't much that I would write home about.

Blackklansman was fine, but it didn't feel like anything particularly special.

I liked The Favourite.  I would have swapped Coleman's and Stone's categories though.

Black Panther was a Marvel movie.

I doubt you're truly in the minority.  It is a slow, thoughtful movie.  Something about it really drew me in and the images reminded me of images of my own childhood when I was really young.  The part where they go to the cousins house and it is a madhouse and they have the fire reminded me of all the chaotic visits I had to my parents hometowns when I was little.  So I got a sense of deja vu and that plus the broad social themes really got me.

If you didn't find a portal in, I can see it being boring.

May be a first for me. I have not seen any of the movies nominated in any category. OTOH, I'm pretty much super heroed out, and only movies I saw last year were when wife dragged me to Last Jedi and Solo.

They increased the # of BP nominees several years back.  I think they may have went up to 10 at one point in time.  The Dark Knight would have likely made that cut had the same rules been in place at the time.

kinda similar for me, although I did rent Black Panther and watch it a while back.

the OP didnt have the special effects category listed, so I had to find that

turns out Ive seen 3 of those as well.

VISUAL EFFECTS

"Avengers: Infinity War"
"Christopher Robin"
"First Man"
"Ready Player One"
"Solo: A Star Wars Story"

Okay, saw Infinity War and Solo. So, I've seen two of them. Infinity War was well done, and they've done a good job of juggling all the characters.

What's your pick? My gut says "Ready Player One," but Infinity War is catching up.
