Anyone got a good rain jacket rec? I've always had cheapies, and my last one just bit the dust this morning. Would like something that can be layered over warmer things when needed.

REI's clearance sale begins tomorrow.
Go get a Marmot.

marmot precip is what i have.  works.

It’s pricey though, but I swear by my Foot Joy rain gear. You can get them at Dick’s Sporting Goods, or purchase them online.
The pants damn near cost as much as the jacket, but they breathe out your body-heat, while still being water repellent.
“Titleist” branded golfers wear them and I think they are great for daily wear in the rain, not just for golf.

I’ve got a north face which works well and still looks brand new after being used as an outer shell in 3 excursions.

Whatever you get, make sure it has pit zips.

I bought an LL Bean rain jacket like this one on clearance about 10 years ago.  Except it also had a fleece inner jacket you could take out or put in as needed.  It has been awesome, nice quality.  The closest thing I can find now is just the rain jacket part that looks like this:

jacket above, no liner obviously:

Marmot Precip is one of the best, 30% off right now ($70) at REI:

You can find something for cheaper, but it probably won't have pit-zips; and since rain jackets don't really breath I'd view them as essential.

If you want something a tad nicer the Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow is also 30% off, but twice as much ($140):

I actually went to REI to buy the precip. Ended up walking out with an REI branded Ranier. Was a bit cheaper, had all the same features the precip, and fit me a little better. Also, I was burnt orange.

Check out aftco. I have one that is light and works well for Texas. I doubt I’ll ever have to buy another rain jacket.

The Marmont stuff is nice that my kids have.  Lightweight and breathable, and the REI branded stuff I view much like the HEB branded stuff.  They don't put it on the shelf unless it's of equal quality. I guess I would ask what's your main purpose in staying dry?  Do you want to be able to move around and want a jacket, or a longer coat style that keeps your ass dry as well.

I have some old cheaper rain gear that I pull out occasionally but it doesn't breath worth a damn. I need some better rain gear that will work for fishing.  Lightweight enough to store compactly but solid enough to not get soaked with wind blown rain. Guess with winter shit starting to go on sale maybe I can find something I like.

The major brands all seem to fit different, so I would go with one from a brand that you like the fit of.  Marmot and Columbia both fit me well.

Bumping this thread... any hikers/campers made a purchase in the last two years they'd like to brag about?
