MAYBE the best 3rd baseman ever.

That would be his Orioles teammate, Brooks Robinson.

sorry I was being ironical.  Should have added the extra the first time.

Still, RIP Frank Robinson.

One of my earliest sports heroes.   Hard-nosed, proud;  a technician and artist.   Won the Triple Crown.  Only player to win the  MVP in both leagues.   And the first African-American manager.  He was the best player on some absolutely great Orioles teams in the '60s and '70s.  His defense was overshadowed on the Earl Weaver Orioles because they were the greatest defensive teams I've ever seen.  Brooks Robinson and  Mark Belanger on the left side of the infield, both of whom were, IMO, the best fielders at their respective position I've seen.  Davey Johnson and Boog Powell on the right; Johnson was an excellent defensive 2B, but after he left he was replaced by an even better fielder and player, Bobby Grich.  Frank Robinson was very good in RF, Paul Blair in CF one of the two best defenders there in my memory (along with Andruw Jones).  Everybody played their ass off, not so much out of fear of Earl Weaver, but because they didn't want to incur the wrath of Frank Robinson.  He was the OF version of Bob Gibson, a fearsome warrior.  RIP.

He was the reason I had a Orioles hat when I was 5. I come from a Red Sox family and not a word was said.

RIP.

Love me some Brooks Robinson but you're high if you think he was a better overall 3B than:

All around?  Maybe Schmidt.  But Brooks was the best fielding third baseman to ever live, and it's not even close.

I have been an O’s fan since birth.

I got to watch most of an O’s game from the owners box back in 95 when I was at the Naval Academy. I was lucky enough to sit next to Frank. What a great player and what a great guy.

Robinson was before my time, but I remember looking at his stats as a kid and thinking that he was as good as anyone. He's an inner-circle HOFer, and based on what I've read about the man, was tough as hell.

I just heard about this today.   Frank was winding down his career as I started paying attention to baseball but my dad is a big O's fan and raved about how good he was.

RIP good sir.
