Toeing the line I'm sure.

It proved to be pretty dangerous, so I hope the next time around they'll enforce them.

Regardless, I really enjoyed watching the indycars race at COTA, and hope to make the entire weekend next time.

Yeah it's no coincidence that easily the two biggest incidents of the weekend were at T19. The Qualifying incident was worse becuase of the lack of track limits and the race incident was at least partially caused by it. It's stupid.

Fernando and McLaren's Indy 500 "Nine Degrees Program"...

Fun race.  Went to at least 12 straight back in the day.

Rossi really walked the dog there.

A few miscellaneous bad pictures from the day. Some of Stadium Super Trucks (always worth the price of admission), and a picture of the wall on the outside of Turn 8 at the end of the weekend.

I'll put some pictures of old racecars and shit in the Classic Car thread in Hobbies.

Bump.

It's May in Indy.  I'll be going to the GP, some testing sessions, quals, carb day, and the 500.  Gonna be a great month.

the low wide sidepods were so good looking.  F1 cars were fantastic back then as well.

Indy GP weekend is here....

some full race broadcasts of Indy 500's on IMS Youtube channel  link

2011 - 2013 - 2001 - 1985 - 2014 - 2006 - 1987 - 2015 - 2012 - 2008 - 1966 - 1974 - 1989  - 1994

also a couple of segments of Drive Like Andretti on NBC Sports Youtube channel link

Hmm ... Pato to Red Bull.

I like the idea. The kid can drive.

I tried like hell to find a Pato shirt at Long Beach but I don't think that there were any to be had.

O'ward clobbers Rossi and essentially ends his race before even crossing the start line. Got a drive through for it.

Young guys filling most of the top 5 early.

Ericsson throws away his best starting position of the year by spinning by himself in the final corner and sliding all the way up to the wall of the speedway track.

Restart after Ericsson caution Dixon puts big pressure on Rosenqvist causing him to lock up in turn 1. Herta spins behind them after getting hit by Harvey then gets clipped by Hunter-Ray who I think was tapped by someone else.

Herta was showing speed and is now miles back.

Rosenqvist lost the lead to Dixon.

Second restart worse still for the rookie Swede. Bad jump again and lost two more spots.

Rosenqvist not getting any better luck as his fuel probe spilled after filling and made him leave the pit box on fire. Seemed to go out without further problem though.

Now we're about to play the "when to go to rain tires" lottery.

Wow. Castroneves pits for wets and on pit exit spins straight into the gravel.

Everybody about to pit and they aren't sure which tires to use. Some going slicks and some going rain.

Rosenqvist sets another fire on pit lane.

Crazy stuff.

Sato spins under caution. Newgarden's crew rolls a tire across pit lane. It's still only kind of raining so who knows if the rain tires will make it to the end.

Fun stuff.

Might hit the time limit before the scheduled laps to end this.

Pagenaud making a late charge. Took a while to gain 2nd over Harvey but out braked him in the wet turn 1 and made it work. Chasing down the leader now.

Pagenaud gets it done with two to go and pulls away to win easily.

Fun race.

I watched some of the race. I was definitively entertained, there was a goof amount of passing while I was watching.

My goddamn DVR fucked up (or maybe I did...) so we missed all but the last 13 laps.

Hell of a charge by Pagenaud though.

They do put the full race on YouTube after a day or two

Actually I think maybe the 2019 races will have a 30 minute edited race on YouTube then full races appear after the season is done.

2017 and 2018 full races are there.

My DVR is now showing it after all - must be some kind of glitch yesterday. If we have time after F1 today, we'll go back and watch from the start...

Technology...

Castroneves already up to 228 today.  Can't wait to be out at the track for Fast Friday this week.

That is in the first hour of practice.  Without boost.  And last year's pole speed was 229

Really wish they had a way to watch it without paying for NBC Gold.

So pissed about that.  Last few years all practices have been streamed live online.

From 1958 to 1988, qualifying speeds went from 145 mph to 219.

From 1989 until now (also roughly 30 years) qualifying speed has basically just bounced around from 220-230 depending on year-to-year rule changes.

In 1990, if you had asked me how fast the cars would be lapping in 2020, I would have said at least 250. Why does it seem like technological progress on the cars has stopped?

Because it's expensive to make the cars fast and safe at the same time.

safety.   they would probably do 260+ if things were more unlimited like in the old days.   they would also probably have a car fly into the grandstands and kill a few hundred people on raceday.   just imagine what tony renna's testing crash would have been like had it happened during the 500 if you added 30 mph to it

McLaren giving Alonso problems in practice today. Heard he had a couple equipment failures. Could be a rough month for him was like 34th in speed today in the limited practice he had.

McLaren will be doing good to just to qualify.

I doubt they could contend for top 15 much less a win.

Well, I think Alonso was top 8 before he crashed a few minutes ago. Wild ride.

This won;t help, but I think they'll get the car qualified. They also have a Carlin backup car iirc.

Pato O'Ward is a Mexican driver? I guess I just assumed he was irish.

Fast Friday. If McLaren doesn't get solid time on track and show some decent no-tow speed they are in trouble tomorrow.

I'm also curious to see if Carpenter racing can lock out the entire front row.

It's also quite possible that weather will be another problem today and cut their time even shorter.

On the plus side Alonso ran a bunch of laps and did improve his time little by little through the day.

But he is still way down the time sheet.

I do think he makes the race now but they're going to have to find a lot of speed during the practices between qualifying and the race.

Yeah they ran the 2nd most laps of anyone and Alonso said they made a lot of progress finding the right directions to go with different things, gathered a lot of good data, etc. Now they just need to make the field and then keep making good progress in the upcoming practices...
